          • 661.Sleep advice for kids of all ages
It is important for each child to get enough sleep every day. Here we will learn more about that.
How much sleep does a child need?
               (1)
            Newborns 0 to 3 months should sleep 10 to 18 hours a day.Babies 4 to 11 months should start to sleep through the night,for 9 to 12 hours at a time.Toddlers(初學走路的孩子) 1 to 2 years need about 11 to 14 hours a day.Children 3 to 5 should get 11 to 13 hours a night. (2)
Teenagers 14 and up need 8 to 10 hours of sleep.
            What can parents do?
               Set a strict nap(小睡) timetable. (3)
Even older children can benefit from late-afternoon naps if they are not getting enough sleep at night. But keep them short--- 30 minutes at most.
               (4)
Remember to ask your children to turn off the television and the computer an hour before bed.If possible, get them out of your child's bedroom since the light from electronic screens can make sleep a difficult job.
               Get them moving (5)
Running around and playing sports is great, but kids can be active in other ways, too.Take the dog for a walk,or go to the park --- just get them out of the house and get them moving.

            A.Pay attention to screen time.
B.It usually depends on their age.
C.It's OK to go to bed 30 minutes later.
            D.Kids 6 to 13 need 9 to 11 hours of sleep.
E.Younger children should take a short sleep during the day.
F.Energy drinks can keep kids from falling or staying asleep.
G.Exercise during the day helps children sleep better at night.

          • 662.It was in the bleak midwinter, and the travelling couple struggled through the cold night, seeking shelter. The father-to-be scanned the roadside for some home, some inn where his struggling companion might rest safely for the night. He looked over at her frequently. She labored along, her way made heavier by the new life growing inside her. They needed a warm, dry place safe from the bitter wind. When her time came,it must not be out here along the roadway.Their names were not Mary and Joseph, but Pepper and Cooper.Nor were they man and wife, but rather a pair of dogs, and the place was on a rural highway outside of town.
That December night,Gus Kiebel,a county wildlife officer, was driving home from work when he spotted the pair in the flash of his headlights. It was snowing so hard that it was difficult to see,but he could tell the dogs were wearing collars and tags. What were they doing out here on this road?
He parked his truck and approached the animals.Gus squatted (蹲下) and stretched out his hands to the dogs, which made no effort to escape.Gus read their tags by his truck's jye.aiadlights.He pulled out his phone to call the number listed, but it was snowing so hard that his screen blurred (模糊不清的).He placed the dogs in his truck,on the floor of the passenger side.By the time he came around to the driver's side,he found that they had climbed onto the passenger sent and were snuggled (依偎) together there.Gus dried his phone, took a picture of the pair and sent it to his wife,Katie Kiebel. Then he dialed the number from the dogs' tags.A man answered and immediately grew defensive when Gus told him why he was calling.
"I gave those dogs away," the man said. "They're not mine anymore."
"Well,do you want them back?" Gus asked.
"No.I can't take care of them." The man answered.

There was an elderly lady standing in the bone-chilling cold outside the back of the supermarket. She was holding a basket with bunches of flowers.
"Would you like the flowers, they are ﹩3?" she asked me as I was walking past.I politely responded "No,thank you",as I walked away and went inside the supermarket.
I was walking around the supermarket searching for the thing that I was needing to buy and thinking of that lady, standing in the cold holding her basket of flowers.Visualizing the beautiful flowers I had admired, her polite quiet voice and lonely figure,I wondered about her unknown story of standing in the cold with her basket.Maybe her family was in urgent need of money;maybe she was a lone soul to earn a living with her own hands...
I had my own personal struggles,I had to budget for everything and I appreciated that ﹩3 was a lot for me,like many of us all and probably for her too.But it wasn't my first thought when she had asked me about buying her flowers. My first thought was I didn't have the cash but this couldn't be used as an excuse for not buying those flowers.I had not carried cash with me for a few years and I thought many of us did the same.
When I went to the register to pay with my card I asked for ﹩3 cash out.The staff member questioned me about the ﹩3.I felt anxious about it quickly and tried to remember the money I had in my account. And at the same time she pressed the button to process it.I had mentioned that I wanted to buy flowers from the lady who was selling them outside.Sigh of relief.I was glad to see it all had been accepted by the machine and the staff member handed me the ﹩3.

          • 669.Researchers have found that short and intense stair climbing, which can be done almost anywhere, has great benefits for fitness.
The findings make the two most common excuses of couch potatoes untrue:no time and no access to the gym. "Stair climbing is a form of exercise anyone can do in their own home, after work or during the lunch hour," says Martin,a lead author of the study. "This research takes interval (間歇) training out of the lab and makes it possible for everyone."
Early studies have shown the benefits of stair climbing over continuous periods of time,up to 70 minutes a week, but researchers wanted to determine if interval training, which includes short and intense exercise separated by short periods of recovery, was a good way to improve heart fitness.Researchers recruited 31 women and tested the effect of two different experiments;each required a 10-minute exercise period, including warm-up,cool-down and recovery. The exercise periods were done three times a week over the course of six weeks.
The first experiment included three 20-second of continuous climbing in an "all-out" manner. The participants were then compared to those who went through the same experiment using an exercise bike which has already been shown to improve fitness.
For the second experiment, some women climbed up and down one flight of stairs for 60 seconds,an experiment which could be easily done at home.
Both experiments, each including a total time of 30 minutes a week, increased heart fitness,an important healthy marker that is connected with long life.

(1)What does Martin say about stair climbing?

            A.It saves lots of time.
            B.It is convenient to do.
            C.It requires special training.
D.It is better than going to the gym.
(2)Why did researchers do the two experiments?

A.To test the results of early studies.
B.To encourage people to climb stairs.
C.To prove the benefits of continuous stair climbing.
D.To find out effect of interval training on heart fitness.
(3)What can we learn from the two experiments?

A.The first one was better for fitness.
B.The second one required less total time.
C.Both of them were good for heart health.
D.People in the second one turned out healthier.
(4)What is the best title for the text?

            A.How Stair Climbing Benefits People.
B.Why Stair Climbing Is the Best Exercise.
C.Stair Climbing—A Good Way to Increase Fitness.
