Daryl was a lorry driver and on his shortest way to Los Angeles there was a weather-beaten bridge he had to drive over day after day for almost 3 years.
Staying at home alone, his 66-year-old mum got into a strange habit of telling his sweet son the headline of the noon news on the phone. It was a daily routine for Daryl to pick up the cellphone at 12: 30 when he was about to drive away from the old shabby bridge. Unbelievable as it sounded, it was true, though.
The sun today was rising when Daryl's delivery truck reached the highway. This was the best time of day to drive, when the roads were wide open and empty. He felt sure he was going to make it to Los Angeles before nightfall, or he would have annoyed his boss. All looked like it was going to be a good day.
Two hours later, out of nowhere, he saw it, a large lump in the middle of the road. Daryl often passed dead animals on the roadside but he knew that this was something different. He slammed on his brakes and the truck screeched to a halt.
It turned out to be a girl. Daryl jumped down, raced forward and tried shaking her awake but she wouldn't move, so he lifted her up and carried her to the side of the road. At least she wouldn't be run over there.
Now she was someone else's problem. He had to make it to Los Angeles by nightfall and didn't have time to be a hero. He climbed back into his truck but as he looked in his mirror and saw the girl lying still by the side of the road, he was deep in thought, "What if she was smelt by wild animals around or knocked again by other drivers passing by?"

Paragraph 2:

【考點】讀后續寫.
【答案】His feeling of guilt pushed him down from the vehicle towards her again. Daryl lifted the girl up and moved her to the passenger seat. Worrying about the ambulance couldn't arrive here in time, he decided to take her to hospital personally. So he pressed the accelerator and searched for next exit. Soon the lorry got to the nearest hospital and the girl was sent to get first aid. Daryl didn't leave until knowing the girl had been out of danger while her family was informed, which made him finally breathe easy.
Just as he was about to pull back from the hospital, his mother called him as usual. Daryl felt at a loss but still answered. He tried his best to keep calm and pretended that he had just crossed that old bridge. His mum didn't seem to sense anything wrong and talked about headlines as always. After the call, Daryl sighed heavily, for he knew this delivery would definitely be late tonight. Suddenly another phone call interrupted his depression and it was from the girl's father who called to express sincere gratitude. A smile gradually appeared on his face, just like the golden road before him, shining in the sun.

I grew up in a poor family with six brothers, three sisters,my father and mother. We had little money and few goods, but plenty of love and attention.I was happy and energetic.I understood that no matter how poor a person was,he could still afford a dream.
My dream was athletics.By the time I was sixteen,I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything moving on the football field. And I was so lucky that my high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me,but often told me "Dream is priceless".However, when I was about to get off the ground, one particular incident happened, which almost ruined my long-held dream.
It was the summer holiday in senior two and a friend recommended me for a summer job.I was offered ﹩12.25 per hour.Compared with the average ﹩3.5,that was a big sum.I was so excited, because this meant a chance for money in my pocket, certainly money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mojye.air.The prospect(前景)of the job was inviting, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity.
Then I realized I would have to give up summer baseball training to handle the work schedule.I didn't dare to tell my coach,I thought of the advice my mother often gave me when I lacked courage, "If you make your bed,you have to lie in it. "I decided to talk to my coach in person. After all,my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his disappointment to me.

2.Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily.
She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother.Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat,but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her.She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey,girl, you want to have the noodles?
"Oh,yes…,but I don't have money on me…" she replied.
"That's nothing.I'll treat you today," said the man. "Come in."
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive.
As she was eating,Jenny cried silently.
"What is it?" asked the man kindly.
"Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped her tears. "Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me.She is so merciless compared to a stranger!!"
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, "Girl,do you really think so?I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot.But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you?Have you expressed your gratitude to her?"
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock?she remembered Mother's familiar face and weathered hands. "Why did I not think of that?A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me."
On the way home,Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

3. One day, when I was a first-year student in high school,I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kris.It looked like he was carrying all of his books.I thought to myself,"Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd(書呆子)."
I had quite a weekend planned(parties and a football game with my friends),so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.As I was walking,I saw a gang of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.He looked up,and I saw terrible sadness in his eyes.
My heart went out to him.So I jogged over to him,and as he crawled around looking for his glasses,I saw tears in his eyes.As I handed him his glasses,I said,"They are bad guys! They really should be punished."He looked at me and said,"Hey,thanks!"There was a big smile on his face.It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
I helped him pick up his books and asked him where he lived. As it turned out,he lived near me,so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to a private school before.I would have never hung out with a private school kid before, but we talked all the way home, and I carried his books.
