          Practicing Chinese with Chinese friends
I started taking a short beginners' course in Chinese when I was in the UK.Since I' came to China in 2021,I have been using an App on my phone called Hello Chinese.I find reading the small stories on it really helpful.I first read them with pinyin and the Chinese characters and then I'll read them again with just the characters.
Also, going out for dinner with my Chinese friends can be a good way to learn. In my life,I'm a bit more confident(自信的)to practice speaking naturally spoken Chinese.
                                            David House,the UK
          Chinese can make language simpler.
When I worked at Tsinghua University, one of my jobs was translating information from Chinese to English. Each day I would find something new and interesting about Chinese.Chinese can be emotive(有感染力的)and often give our information more clearly than English. For example,a Chinese sign at school might read,"特殊時(shí)間隔坐,人人有責(zé)".But the English sign would read:"During the special time, please sit apart from each other. We are all responsible for doing our part."The English is much longer and not as simple.

Why April 20? The UN Chinese Language Day,which falls on April 20,started in 2010.The date was picked because of guyu(grain rain),the 6th of 24 solar terms(節(jié)氣).It was to pay tribute to Cang Jie(倉頡),who is said to be the inventor of Chinese characters. As the old story says, when Cang Jie invented Chinese characters, the gods cried and grain rain fell from the sky. From then on,Chinese people celebrated guyu in memory of Cang Jie.

          • 2.Dear Laura,
Thanks for your message.Yes,I'm having a great time on my student exchange program in France.I was a bit nervous before I arrived here, but there was no reason to be.My host family is really nice. They go out of their way to make me feel at home. The grandmother knows that I miss Chinese food a lot.So she actually learned how to make Chinese food! She also has a teenage granddaughter about my age who is really kind. She always talks to me in French to help me practice. You wouldn't believe how quickly my French has improved because of that.I'm very comfortable speaking French now.Although I still make lots of mistakes,it doesn't worry me as it used to.
My biggest challenge is learning how to behave at the dinner table. As you can imagine, things are very different from the way they are at home. For example, you're not supposed to put your bread on your plate. You're supposed to put it on the table!I thought that was pretty strange at first, but now I'm used to it.Another example is that you're not supposed to eat anything with your hands except bread, not even fruit. You have to cut it up and eat it with a fork.Another thing is that it is impolite to say you're full.If you don't want any more food, you should just say, "That was delicious." Also, you're not supposed to put your elbows on the table.I have to say that I find it difficult to remember everything, but I'm gradually getting used to it.I don't find French customs so strange anymore.
I'll write again soon and tell you more about my life in France.Hope you're having a good school year.
            Yours,
            Lin Yue

          • 3.Dear Laura,
There is a flea market(跳蚤市場) every month next to my home.I want to sell my old toys(玩具) and books to make money for new toys.Do you have any tips(提議) for a good sale?
            Yu Le,11,Qingdao
            Yu Le,
When I was a kid,I sold(賣) my old toys at flea markets.I even had a cola stand(攤位)!I have a few tips for you.
First, have fair(公道的) prices. Many people go to flea markets to get good deals(買得合算).So don't make your things have too high prices!
Second, put your toys and books into groups.(1)This will make it easy for people to see what you are selling.
Third, have fun!Even if you don't sell all of your things, you can make some new friends.I hope you(2)have a good time!

            (1)回答問題。
①Why does Yu Le want to sell things at the flea market?

②Why does Laura ask Yu Le to have fair prices?

            (2)(1)處" This " refers to(指代)

            (3)從文中找出與(2)處 have a good time"意思相同或者相近的詞組。

            (4)請根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容列出兩條Laura 給Yu Le的 tips.
