Taking Chances My mother recently read me a speech she had made at a local high school, hoping to(1)BBmy endless quest for answers to everything.
Ever since I was very young,(2)AAof making mistakes,I've asked countless times, "What should I do?" I don't remember clearly when I(3)DDonly to do things the "right" way,and made "doing it the right way" my motto.
However, sometime during my high school years,I(4)CC.Maybe it was when I decided to try for the lead in "Beauty and the Beast." Never mind that I would have to memorize(5)AAand rehearse movements,I would take the chance that I might(6)CC.On the day of tryouts,my heart was pounding;my hands were(7)BBbadly when I got up to sing. But when I opened my mouth, the sound was loud and(8)AA.I reached for the high notes that sometimes were(9)DDmy reach.I was trying to do my best even though I might fail.(10)CCI didn't!
The audition (試鏡) was definitely an(11)DDpart of the process.I realized that if I wanted to live life to the fullest,I had to take(12)AA.
Now,I do take these chances, with baby steps, every day;voicing my opinions in class discussions or debates,(13)DDfor a high note in church choir, riding my horse over a three-foot jump.
Three years ago,I broke my back when I fell from my horse.The(14)BBmeant I couldn't try out for basketball, which I loved. And,the day I(15)BBout for track was the first day my doctor allowed me to do any physical activity at all.The coach didn't take me,so I started running with my mom.No stop-watches.No cheering crowds.I didn't(16)CCthe track team, but I didn't fail, either.
I have finally learned to(17)CCmyself,like taking a tough science course. And I have come to realize that even though my parents, friends and teachers don't always have the(18)AAto "What should I do?",they will be there to(19)DDme when I try.
"Life is learning to deal with Plan B," my mother(20)BBin her speech. But I now know that the Plan A's I make for my life will become easier and easier with every chance I take.

2."Quick,quick,slow,slow," my husband said as I was trying to focus. We frequently stepped on each other's feet. Both of us were being rhythmically challenged, and we figured a series of lessons might help us look somewhat elegant on the dancing floor. However,it didn't.
It didn't matter that the lessons didn't pay off.Our learning something new together gave us a string of good memories, such as taking a Thai cooking class on a cold Chicago night and learning how to make classic cocktails (雞尾酒) in a common bar. These experiences are my best memories from the past 10 years. We always have such a great time when we're trying something new together. It seems to have strengthened our relationship, and makes me feel like we have a closer connection.
It turns out my theory as such is backed by research. One study shows that learning new things with your spouse (配偶),friends,or partners, can strengthen your connection or friendship. But how exactly does this work? The key is vulnerability(弱點). "Learning new things together strengthens bonds because it is at those moments that we can show our vulnerability to one another,"says Dr.Hisla Bates. "When we are learning a new task, misfortunes and failures are bound to happen. In those moments when we fail, the other party can be there in favor of us.We can work together to find a solution, and working together helps deepen the connection."
The benefits gained from learning new things with your partner can come from activities as small as hiking, trying a new recipe, going boating in the local lake or taking a fitness class together. You don't have to bungee jump or skydive to grow closer.Try selecting activities that both partners are unfamiliar with,as this will ensure you're on the same page.
Trying to learn something new together once a month will benefit you and your spouse or friends.Overall, some of my best memories with my husband are the moments when we are learning something new together.
