On a street corner in a busy town there lived a boy named Billy. His father was a policeman, whose work was to help old people and children cross the streets safely.Billy was proud of his father and wanted to be like him. "Some day," he said to himself,I will be a policeman, too. Then I will help people to cross the streets.
Near Billy's bedroom window was a big tree.He often saw a mother squirrel sitting close to her nest.Sometimes Billy put peanuts outside his window, and it wasn't long for the sharp eyes of Mother Squirrel to see them there.Down she would come on a long branch of the tree.Quickly she would pick up a peanut, put it into her mouth, and run away quickly.
Mother Squirrel had a family of four tiny gray squirrels. How excited Billy was the first time he saw them sitting outside their nest! They learned to jump from one branch to another, run up and down the tree trunk and follow their mother where she went.
One Saturday morning Billy was gathering the grass with a rake—a garden tool with a long handle.Suddenly an excited sound told him that something was happening.Instantly Mother Squirrel came down the tree. One by one,the little squirrels followed her.The smallest squirrel was the very last.Across the street from Billy's house was a garden in which grew a walnut tree.It was to this tree that Mother Squirrel wanted to take her family. She ran to the sidewalk, and in a moment was safely across the street and ir the garden. The little squirrels followed except the last little one, because he could not run so fast.
Just as he reached the street, along came a big automobile. He was so frightened that he looked for some safe place to hide in.A dark hole like his nest was the best place he knew.So he jumped into the first hole he saw.It was the opening to a sewer(下水道)at the corner of the street. The poor baby squirrel tried to climb up the wet sides of the hole, but could not get out by himself, and he was too far away to call his mother.Billy knew how to help.

【答案】The thought that he was a policeman's son reminded him of the rake in his hand.He put the rake down into the hole at once. The little squirrel, who had been taught to climb so well, came up with the assistant of the handle. The little fellow was very wet and frightened when he climbed out of the hole.Billy took him off the rake gently, and rubbed his fur clean and dry with soft grass. Then he carried the baby squirrel across the street to the garden where the other squirrels were playing.
Mother Squirrel heard the last one sing when Billy put him down on the grass.jye.ai came running.Billy watched her while she carried the little squirrel safely across the street to the nest in the tree. After putting the child to bed,she went back into the garden. That night,Mother Squirrel came to Billy's window to get a peanut. She chattered away, trying to talk to the boy. "She wanted to say 'thank you,'" Billy thought, "and I'm glad I helped her." That's what the police do.I'm the squirrel's cop.One day I'll be the real me. "

1.Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily.
She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother.Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat,but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her.She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey,girl, you want to have the noodles?
"Oh,yes…,but I don't have money on me…" she replied.
"That's nothing.I'll treat you today," said the man. "Come in."
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive.
As she was eating,Jenny cried silently.
"What is it?" asked the man kindly.
"Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped her tears. "Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me.She is so merciless compared to a stranger!!"
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, "Girl,do you really think so?I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot.But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you?Have you expressed your gratitude to her?"
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock?she remembered Mother's familiar face and weathered hands. "Why did I not think of that?A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me."
On the way home,Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

I grew up in a poor family with six brothers, three sisters,my father and mother. We had little money and few goods, but plenty of love and attention.I was happy and energetic.I understood that no matter how poor a person was,he could still afford a dream.
My dream was athletics.By the time I was sixteen,I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything moving on the football field. And I was so lucky that my high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me,but often told me "Dream is priceless".However, when I was about to get off the ground, one particular incident happened, which almost ruined my long-held dream.
It was the summer holiday in senior two and a friend recommended me for a summer job.I was offered ﹩12.25 per hour.Compared with the average ﹩3.5,that was a big sum.I was so excited, because this meant a chance for money in my pocket, certainly money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mojye.air.The prospect(前景)of the job was inviting, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity.
Then I realized I would have to give up summer baseball training to handle the work schedule.I didn't dare to tell my coach,I thought of the advice my mother often gave me when I lacked courage, "If you make your bed,you have to lie in it. "I decided to talk to my coach in person. After all,my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his disappointment to me.

3. One day, when I was a first-year student in high school,I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kris.It looked like he was carrying all of his books.I thought to myself,"Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd(書呆子)."
I had quite a weekend planned(parties and a football game with my friends),so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.As I was walking,I saw a gang of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.He looked up,and I saw terrible sadness in his eyes.
My heart went out to him.So I jogged over to him,and as he crawled around looking for his glasses,I saw tears in his eyes.As I handed him his glasses,I said,"They are bad guys! They really should be punished."He looked at me and said,"Hey,thanks!"There was a big smile on his face.It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
I helped him pick up his books and asked him where he lived. As it turned out,he lived near me,so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to a private school before.I would have never hung out with a private school kid before, but we talked all the way home, and I carried his books.
