You may have heard of the American Dream,an idea that has created the hopes of Americans for generations (代) .It began as a hope that the US was a land of dreams, and that anyone could achieve success through hard work.At times, the dream has the meaning of owning a house, having a good job,or each generation doing better than the former(前面的) one.
Yet today, this idea seems to be very different. As Time magazine pointed out, quite different from the older generation, many Millennials (the generation born after 1980)considered the American Dream as " day -to-day control of your life".
Home ownership, once the main meaning of the American Dream,is becoming less important to this generjye.aiion.At the same time, about 40% of them choose traveling as part of their dream. And entrepreneurship (創(chuàng)業(yè)) is a rising favorite,as about 26% of Millennials consider it as part of their dream.
So what has led to this huge change? Many point fingers at the poor situation.Modern young Americans have to face a world troubled by ever bad social economy (經(jīng)濟) .
"The rate (比率) of 16-to-24-year-olds out of school and out of work is unusually high at 15%.Many college students have taken jobs that don't require a degree (學位)," Time reported. The magazine worries that these difficulties may lead to a lost generation who are not " able to ever truly find their feet on the company".
Dan Kadlec,a reporter of Time, sees Millennials as new meanings of their hopes and dreams. "This situation is different for young adults today," he wrote. "A true American dream has to be easy to achieve." For example, some people might say that it is being married, having two children and living in a three -bedroom home with a big yard, rather than having money or success, this kind of dream might not be those such as poor and lonely life.
