11.Money is all surrounding us.Every day,we see it,use it,and it is on the tip of our tongue.Did you ever stop to consider where the money you carry around every day comes from?
Making new money is a very unique job and no easy task.It has up to 65 steps. When the money in use gets dirty and worn out,it is replaced with new money. The old money is taken from banks and brought to places where it is destroyed.Usually, the old money is burned. The burned money is replaced by new paper money.
If old money is being replaced, then new money is printed in a place called a mint(鑄幣廠).Large sheets of paper are printed with many pictures of some currency(流通貨幣).These large sheets are cut into individual bills. The individual bills are then put together in big stacks and then sent to banks.
Sometimes the mint will make a new bill with a new picture (photos of statesmen and places of interest are favoured) or a new colour. It is not easy for the government to make a new bill.It takes a long time, and there are many steps to go through before a new bill can be sent to banks.First, people in the government decide that a new kind of bill is needed. Then, they ask an artist to design the new bill.A different artist cuts the new picture into a soft piece of metal called a die.The dies are made and put onto large printing machines. Then, very special paper is used, which no one but the mint can have.Along with this special paper, the mint also prints currency using special colours. After the dies print the new currency onto the paper, the bills are cut, stacked, and sent off to the banks.
(1)From the passage we know that
A.banks make new money
B.it takes 65 procedures to make new money
C.mints decide what kind of bill is needed
D.old money that is not used is forever stored in a special place
(2)We can infer from the passage that a die is
A.something for dead people
B.a special machine that prints the money
C.a special piece of paper that the money is made from
D.a piece of metal that puts the picture on the money
(3)Which of the following shows the RIGHT order of dealing with new money?
①New money is printed in a mint.
②Bills are cut from large sheets of special paper.
③New money is sent in large amounts to banks.
④The government decides to make new money.
A.①②③④
B.④③②①
C.④①③②
D.④①②③
(4)Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.The reason for making new money.
B.The processes of making a new bill.
C.The amount of new money needed.
D.Things used to make new money or a new bill.組卷:8引用:1難度:0.5 -
12.We look ahead to London's art and exhibition openings and select the must-see shows.
Double science
It's a big month for the Science Museum, with a new gallery and an exhibition opening. The Science City gallery tells the story of London between 1550 and 1800 when major scientific breakthroughs were happening across the city - from Newton's laws of physics to the birth of microscopes allowing us to see the tiny creatures that live among us.If that isn't enough, there's also an exhibition on how art and science have worked closely together over the centuries and continue to do so today.
Science City 1550 - 1800:The Linbury Gallery at the Science Museum.Opens 12 September - 13 October,free.
The Art of Innovation:From Enlightenment to Dark Matter at the Science Museum.25 September - 26 January, free but ticketed.
Are you worried yet?
We all suffer from anxiety.Artists look into this through artworks that bring to light their own anxieties or how people living with anxiety manage.
The exhibition also covers what anxiety would look like if it could be visualised in light or sound - something we imagine to be impossible.
On Edge:Living in an Age of Anxiety at Science Gallery.
September - 19 January,free.
Climbing the walls
No artist has made a bigger career out of placing sculptures of human figures all over the place.Antony Gormley, the artist behind the Angel of the North and sculptures standing all over London, takes over the Royal Academy of Arts with a blockbusting (轟動一時的) exhibition. This is the hot art ticket in town.

13. Scientists say the plant enset,an Ethiopian staple (主食),could be a new superfood and a lifesaver in the face of climate change. The banana-like crop has the potential to feed more than 100 million people in a warming world, according to a new study.
Enset or "false banana",almost unknown outside of Ethiopia,is a close relative of the banana, but is consumed only in one part of this country. The banana-like fruit of the plant is inedible, but the starchy stems (莖) and roots can be used to make porridge and bread.Research suggests the crop can be grown over a much larger range in Africa. "This is a crop that can play a really important role in addressing food security and sustainable development," said a university professor in Awasa,Ethiopia.
Using agricultural surveys and modelling work, scientists predicted the potential range of enset over the next four decades. They found the crop could potentially feed more than 100 million people and boost food security in Ethiopia and other African countries, including Kenya,Uganda and Rwanda.
Study researcher Dr James Borrell,of the Royal Botanic Gardens,Kew,said planting enset,as an alternative for lean times, could help boost food security. "It's got some really unusual features that make it absolutely unique as a crop," he said. "You plant it at any time, you harvest it at any time. That's why they call it the tree against hunger."
There is growing interest in seeking new plants to feed the world, given our reliance on a few staple crops.Nearly half of all the calories we eat come from three species — rice, wheat, and maize. "We need to diversify the plants we use globally as a species because all our eggs are in a very small basket at the moment," said Dr Borrell.
(1)What does the underlined word "inedible" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Not secure enough.
B.Not diverse enough.
C.Not fit to be planted.
D.Not suitable to be eaten.
(2)What do we know about Ethiopia's enset from the text?
A.It is a special species of banana.
B.It can help with solving food shortage.
C.It has fed more than 100 million people.
D.It can be grown at anytime and anywhere.
(3)What is Dr Borrell's attitude towards seeking new staple plants?
A.Negative.
B.Objective.
C.Approving.
D.Doubtful.
(4)What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To provide a solution to food problems.
B.To advertise a unique banana-like staple.
C.To recommend a magic crop against hunger.
D.To introduce a wonder crop for climate change.組卷:0引用:2難度:0.5 -
14.A new study has found that a child's reading speed can be improved by simply increasing the space between letters within a piece of text. The research, led by Dr Steven Stagg of Anglia Ruskin University(ARU),examined the benefits of letter spacing and coloured overlays(顏色標注)among children.
Two groups of children, dyslexic(有閱讀障礙的)and non-dyslexic children, were asked to read four texts with either standard or extra-large letter spacing, both with and without a coloured overlay. They were instructed to read the text out loud while being recorded. The recording was used to measure the number of errors they made —specifically missed words, added words, wrong words, and pronunciation—as well as the participants' reading time.
The study discovered that text with increased space between letters provided a benefit for both groups. On average, the dyslexia group showed a 13% increase in reading speed, while the group of non-dyslexic children showed a 5% jye.aicrease.In addition to improving reading speed,it also resulted in a significant decline in the number of words missed by the children with dyslexia. However, the study found that coloured overlays had no significant impact on reading speed or the reduction of errors for either group.
Dr Stagg,Senior Lecturer in Psychology at ARU,said:"We believe extra-large letter spacing works by reducing what is known as the 'crowding effect',which can hamper the recognition of letters and reduce reading speed."
"Our findings strongly suggest that teachers can be confident that all children would be helped by increased letter spacing in reading materials."Dr Stagg added."While we found that coloured overlays provided little benefit,we suggest children should be encouraged to use overlays if they find these help their reading.Coloured overlays may not increase reading speeds, but they may extend reading stamina(持久力).Previous research suggests their benefits may not become apparent if reading time is less than 10 minutes and the short reading duration of the tests in our study may have put coloured overlays at a disadvantage."
(1)Which of the following best describes the research process in paragraph 2?
A.Illustrate,group and report.
B.Read,instruct and measure.
C.Question,assume and prove.
D.Categorize,record and count.
(2)What can we learn about increased letter spacing from paragraph 3?
A.It reduces reading errors.
B.It sharpens reading skills.
C.It arouses reading interest.
D.It enhances reading comprehension.
(3)What does the underlined word"hamper"in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Obtain.
B.Prevent.
C.Change.
D.Involve.
(4)What can be inferred about coloured overlays from paragraph 5?
A.They might not have been evaluated fairly.
B.They might not be recommended by experts.
C.They might work better in short reading.
D.They might have some disadvantages.組卷:28引用:6難度:0.5

28. Prissy came to us as a puppy,a little black Pekinese mix with the cutest face.As cute as she was,Prissy had one major flaw —she couldn't even find her way home from the mailbox.
We spent half our time hunting for that dog.We live in a rural community of northwest Georgia —mostly woods and a small lake. She loved that lake, and spent most days patrolling the water's edge for frogs.
Prissy didn't always stay by the lake, though. She liked to explore.Consequently,it became an almost weekly ritual to look for her.We rescued her from a boot camp for troubled teens,a neighbor's house six miles away, and even once from fifty feet up an oak tree.
Prissy was smart but she never paid attention to where she was going. She would just put her nose to the ground and start following a squirrel, rabbit or stray cat. When she finished her mission she would have no idea how she got wherever she ended up.
After a while, most of our closer neighbors knew her.Consequently, she never really "had" to find her way home because she would just go to the nearest front door and cry and whine until they let her in.They'd call, and we'd drive over and get her.If we weren't home, they would just load her in their car and bring her home.
However, one time when she wandered off,no calls came in.
She had been missing for about fourteen hours, and none of our neighbors had seen her,so we decided to search by car.We drove up and down the surrounding roads calling out to her, driving slowly and checking house to house. After driving several miles in the surrounding area,we became discouraged and decided to head home to regroup and figure out what to do next.
