          第二部分 閱讀理解(共兩節,滿分50)

          • 1.After years of touring the world,in 2019,Tutankhamun began his final world tour before resting forever in the new Grand Egyptian Museum. His journey, which began in California and received great welcome in Paris, will take him as far from home as Japan,Sydey and South Korea.
From now until May 2020,he stops off at London's Saatchi Gallery. Here's a glimpse of some treasures you'll witness.
               Guardian Statue(守衛石像)
This life-sized guardian statue is one of a set of two that watched over the entrance to Tut's burial chamber(墓室),and was one of the first things Carter saw upon entering the tomb. It's their eyes that immediately draw your attention. They never seem to be looking directly at you, because the statues were made for the afterlife, meaning they need to be looking farther than our world. It's one of the objects that have left Cairo for the first time and one that the exhibition's organizers refer to as "a big win".
               Coffinite
You might be surprised to learn that organs were dealt with separately during the process of making mummies in ancient Egypt. Each organ had a specially designated case in order to protect it on the way to the next world.King Tut was no different and this beautiful, gold coffinite was designed to store the young Pharaoh's liver.
               Gilded Wooden Naos(神龕)
One of the most mysterious objects discovered in Tutankhamun's tomb and on display at the Saatchi,is this gilded wooden naos.Never before a description of the relationship between a king and his queen been discovered with this level of detail-it shows that King Tut and his wife (and half-sister),were extremely close.Inside the naos,Carter found a stand for a statue, but no statue itself, only footprints on the base of the stand. Many explanations as to its meaning have been offered over the years, but the most convincing one was a stand for a statue of the god Amun, whose name means "the hidden one".

(1)Where can we see the Tutankhamun exhibition now?

            A.In Egypt.
            B.In the USA.
            C.In France.

A.He was buried with a guardian to lead him to the afterlife.
B.He was married to someone he had a blood relation with
C.Coffinite was used to store his body shortly after he died.
D.There used to be a statue of him in the gilded wooden naos.
(3)Where can we most probably find the passage?

          • 2.On Tuesday the Indian Army found mysterious large footprints in the snow. The military group,on an outing in Nepal, took pictures and later put them on Twitter.Their conclusion:the footprints belong to the Yeti, also known as the abominable snowman.
Most experts in the scientific community say the Yeti is a myth,an imaginary story. The man-like creature is part of Nepali tradition and is said to live high in the Himalayan mountains.
In the tweet, the Indian army said it found the footprints close to a camp near Mount Makalu on April 9.The footprints measured 81 centimeters by 38 centimeters. The tweet did not explain how a mythical beast could leave footprints.
               Reactions on social media
The Indian army's Twitter post has drawn criticism(批評)by some on social media. One user, for example, put an image of a big hole in Bombay and said that Yeti footprints could be found there.Other users said that the supposed Yeti tracks appeared to be a single foot line. One user suggested the Yeti may have been riding a kind of strange bicycle.
               Mount Makalu and the Yeti
Mount Makalu, where the Indian Army took the photographs,is one of the highest mountains in the world. It stands near the Makalu-Barun valley,an area very far from human population. The area has already been explored by researchers looking for the Yeti.
Daniel C.Taylor is one of tjye.aim.He wrote a book on the mystery of the Yeti.Taylor pointed out that the footprints likely came from a bear.Taylor told the Reuters news agency that if the footprints came from "an animal or a single animal,it's the size of a dinosaur."Taylor added,"One needs to really confirm those measurements of the footprint size because we know for sure that there are no dinosaurs living in the Barun valley."
Since the 1920s,tales of a wild beast have attracted climbers in Nepal and around the world. In 2008,Japanese climbers returning from a mountain in western Nepal told Reuters they had seen footprints, which they thought belonged to the Yeti.Although they carried cameras, video equipment and telescopes, they had not seen or taken any photographs of the creature. In 2017,a group of international researchers studied many Yeti samples(樣本) The researchers concluded the samples belonged to bears.

D.The Nepali's choice of camping on high mountains.
(2)What can we learn from the passage?

A.Japanese climbers have taken some photos of the Yet.
B.The Indian army provided Yeti samples to researchers.
C.Taylor wrote a book based on the Indian army's Twitter post.
D.Some social media users doubt whether the footprints are Yeti's.
(3)What could be the best title for the passage?

          • 3.Starting this year,Scholastic Aptitude Test(SAT)scores will be about more than just how many correct answers a person has on the test. The College Board in charge of the SAT recently published a new policy. It will include something called an "adversity score",based on 31 different factors and ranging from 1 to 100.A score of 50 is an "average level of disadvantage",said The New York Times.A higher score means a student has faced more adversjye.aiy.It will cover 150 colleges later this year and be available to all US colleges in 2020.
What kind of adversity do students face?African-American students, for example, are more likely to attend underfunded(資金不足的)schools, and their families usually can't afford extra SAT lessons.Higher SAT scores have been found to have a close tie with students from richer families and those with better-educated parents, reported The New York Times. As a result, the SAT has long been criticized for its unfairness.
The new adversity score tries to deal with that reality. If a student came from a poor neighborhood or attended a high school without enough funding, this information will be given to college administrators. While one student's SAT score may be lower than her rich classmates, college administrators may assume that she did her best in a bad situation.
This sounds good, but the College Board has received a lot of criticism for this new development.Parents are worried. They're concerned that their children's hard work would be "completely neglected"(忽視)just because they happened to come from a rich family.
Writing in Time,Andre J.Washington and Daniel Hemel call the adversity score "a half-hearted effort".They say the score fails to directly deal with racial inequality(種族不平等).They also say that the problems experienced by African-Americans are deeper than just low scores and school funding. For example, they point out that African-American students are less likely to have supportive relationships with teachers,so they are less likely to have satisfying recommendation letters.
At least they're trying, says Richard D.Kahlenberg,a senior fellow at The Century Foundation."An imperfect adversity score is better than failing to consider the difficulty so many students get through",he said."The adversity score is simple and direct."

(1)What does "adversity" probably mean in the passage?

            A.Mess.
            B.Difficulty.
            C.Confusion.
            D.Failure.
(2)What is "that reality" in paragraph 3?

            A.Schools are underfunded.
B.The media have caused the unfairness.
            C.Parents are not well-educated.
D.Family status greatly affects students' scores.
(3)What might the influence of "adversity score"?

A.It will narrow the gap between the white and the black.
B.Students from poor families are likely to benefit from it.
C.It will encourage students to work harder for high scores.
D.Students from rich families may have higher adversity scores.
(4)Why is there criticism of the adversity score?

A.It fails to take students' difficulties into consideration.
B.It will make racial inequality a more serious problem.
C.The relationship between teachers and students will be affected.
D.Efforts made by students from rich families will be undervalued.

Every night,I lie awake in bed and wait for the train to stop.Wait to hear the sound of his work boots dropping on the step by the kitchen door, and his voice calling,"I'm home!"                The smell of coffee wakes me.I run into the kitchen. There he is.Pa lifts me onto his shoulders and pretends to stagger from my weight."How's my boy?①You've gotten so big as a horse.I can hardly lift you up anymore." He puts me down, and I stare at the two bags on the table. One says FLOUR,the other,SUGAR.
Ma says,"I'm going to bake a pie for your pa's homecoming dinner.Go down to the cellar Jimmy, and bring me that jar of apples from the shelf."                Ma's on her knees putting bits of glass in her apron.I bring her the broom. She gets to her feet and starts sweeping up. "Go on upstairs now.Mind you don't cut your bare feet." I want her to yell at me,be mad at me,but that's all she says.
Upstairs,Pa wipes my eyes with the tail of his shirt. "Never mind, old son, accidents happen." I bury my face in Pa's torn old jacket. ④I smell the miles he's walked looking for work to bring us those bags on the table.I smell the dust of the train and the city.I think I can smell how lonely he's been.
"I'm going to bake my mama's sugar pie." Ma says,"It's a special-occasion pie,and it doesn't need apples." "I've always wanted to taste sugar pie." Pa says.

          第二節 概要寫作(滿分20分)

          • 14.閱讀下面短文,根據其內容寫一篇60詞左右的內容概要。
With the first quarter of 2019 crossed out of your calendar, have you stuck with your New Year's resolutions(新年計劃)?If yes, congratulations!Keep on doing it!However,it won't surprise anyone if you are among most people who fail to make any changes.
Procrastination(拖延癥),meaning putting off actions for one reason or another, may play an important part here. For example, when we read a book or write articles, the efficiency will decrease if we have a cell phone close by and we have to finish the plans next day.
Apart from procrastination, overconfidence may also be part of the problem."Optimism and even overconfidence can produce false beliefs, leading us to overvalue our abilities," Israeli-American behaviorist Daniel Kahneman and Israeli psychologist Amos Tversky wrote. In one famous example, planners first planned the Sydney Opera House would be completed by 1963.However,it was actually completed in 1973,an entire decade later.
Knowing the causes of the problem,we can come up with some solutions.According to US writer Steve Pavlina,we could make a to-do list of upcoming tasks, and write down a rough plan for how long we expect each task to take.
Another way is to try and be more objective -- take more of an "outsider" view. The ability to think about your experiences from a more independent point of view, rather than a shared one,is important."It keeps you from getting overly buried in your bias(偏見)," Psychology Today wrote.
These methods aren't enough to send a man to the moon. You also should take action right now.For instance,if you don't feel lazy, meeting a deadline one week ahead of time is probably a good way to finish your plan.
