11.Having lived in California until 1970,my family has felt a number of earthquakes. We have been fortunate, however,to have suffered no bodily harm or property damage.
There is a website that lists all Californian earthquakes recorded from 1769 to the present. The site lists the dates and time as well as the magnitude(震級)and the exact location of any earthquake that measured more than 6.0.There are only a few earthquakes that stand out in my memory and, luckily, none is shown in the website. So,my personal experience with earthquakes might be considered insignificant.
There are three earthquakes that are difficult to forget. The first one was in 1955 and our oldest daughter was walking with me in our backyard in Redwood City in California. As the shaking became stronger,I held her to me with one arm as I held on to one of our fruit trees with the other. All three of us (my daughter,I and the tree) shook for two or three minutes that to us felt like hours.
The second one was in 1963.Our entire family was visiting Disneyland in Southern California. The earth started to shake just as we were beginning to walk from our hotel towards the famous landmark.
My third experience with an earthquake was a lonely one in California. It was in my sixties and I was a-lone in an old church. As the building started to shake,I quickly headed for the do to go outside.I remember I said a few prayers—something like "Help me get out of here in time, dear Heavenly Father. "Minutes later,I was safe outside.

D.The place where the author was born.
(4)The author writes the passage mainly to tell us about
A.a new film about an earthquake

D.how to save children in an earthquake組卷:0引用:1難度:0.5 -
12.Just picture William Shakespeare, the king of English literature(文學),sitting in front of a computer chatting with a "mouse potato" online.Perhaps both sides would think the other is using a strange new language.
Rome was not built in a day,and neither was English. And the Internet speeds up the development of language. The most recent evidence is that some new words have found their way into the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as standard English words.
"Mouse potato",like couch potato, has nothing to do with food.It refers to people who play on their computers all day.The verb "gogle" comes from the popular Internet search engine. You can easily guess its meaning. And a "drama queen" is not really someone from a royal family or a stage play.It can refer t a person who often gives emotional performances or reactions.
In fact, the development of English has never stopped. In 1066,France came to Britain and then ruled it.That is why we find many French words in the English vocabulary like cafe, mutton and beef. After the Ana-can Revolution,English in colonial(殖民地)America began to separate itself from English across the Atatic.Besides changes in intonation(語調),certain words feel out of favour and were replaced. For example " autumn" in Britain became "fall" in the United States.English has changed from a simple language with only 50,000 words into a great one with over 75000.This is partly because of globalization(全球化)
Many languages have also helped the development of English.Words like Chinese "tofu" and Japanese "sushi" can also be found in English.Maybe you will create the next new English word.Who knows?
(1)The writer gave the example of Shakespeare to stress
A.the great change of English
B.the large number of English speakers
C.the great use of English
D.the difficulty in learning English
(2)Which of the following words can not refer to a person?
A.Mouse potato.
B.Couch potato.
C.Drama queen
D.Goggle
(3)One of the following words that doesn't come from a foreign country is
A.Tofu
B.Mutton
C.Autumn
D.Sushi
(4)How many words were added to English during the course of its development?
A.50.000.
B.750.000.
C.800,000
D.700.000組卷:0引用:1難度:0.5 -
13.Born in Ayrshire,in 1759 to William Burness,a poor farmer,Robert Burns was the eldest of seven children. He spent his youth working on his father's farm, but in spite of poverty he also read a lot—at the insistence of his father, who employed a teacher for Robert and his younger brother Gilbert. At 15 Robert was the principal worker on the farm and this encouraged him to start writing.
It was at this age that Robert wrote his first poem Handsome Nell.
When his father died in 1784,Robert and his brother became partners on the farm. However,Robert was more interested in the romantic nature of poetry than the hard work of farming.

On the day of his burial (葬禮)tens of thousands of people came to watch and pay their respect.
