Houtouwan — A village like no other

Old Dragon's Head — The Great Wall you've never seen before
One of the most unusual places to explore the Great Wall is Old Dragon's Head，where the wall meets the sea in Qinhuangdao.The waves crashing against the stones stirs up a certain poetry.After checking out the wall，you can relax yourself on the beach.
Old Dragon's Head is part of the Shanhai Pass section of the wall.It can be reached by taxi from Qinhuangdao train station.
Panjin Red Beach — The world's most beautiful marshlands
Red Beach，located in Panjin，Liaoning province，forms part of what is the biggest wetland in the world.The weeds of the beautiful marshland area are flaming red.Stilted walkways have been installed so visitors can explore without harming the otherworldly weeds.

2．The amount of rubbish that piles on our shore lines is hugely worrying and a growing problem for the planet．It seems like no matter how remote you hike and how high you climb，there's always a dropped plastic container there waiting for you．
Mariah Reading，an American artist，spends the majority of her time outdoors looking for inspiration for her art，based in nature and our natural surroundings．On noticing the amount of waste filling her natural areas，she decided she had to reflect it in her works．
For her latest project，Mariah is looking at both the problem of wasteful littering and the way that art itself can be wasteful in materials，taking the dropped items that fill her natural spaces and painting them to reflect the place in which they were left．
Applying paint to create her masterpieces，Mariah has collected trash （垃圾） from different mountains and parks． "I've been considering my relationship with art and the large amount of waste it can produce，" says Mariah． "I wanted to find ways I can confirm art and its important purpose by working with recycled materials found in landscape environments．"
"Since the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service，I've especially appreciated and been inspired by the natural beauty the parks offer，and found how easily we can take these precious places for granted．I seek to gather as much trash as possible，sculpt it into a canvas （畫布），and paint the scene where the trash originated onto the trash itself，" says Mariah．
As well as through this project，Mariah has explored nature in her art in various different ways and through exhibitions．Mariah's work might not solve the litter problem，but it's just another way that we can get people talking about the problem and the ways we can prevent it from growing any larger．

3．Have you ever said to a friend "That rose's smell is really sweet!"，only to find that your friend can't smell anything at all？
According to a study published in the journal PNAS in May，people have different abilities to recognize certain odors （氣味） - and it's linked to different genes.
For the study，300 people were placed among 150 jars with different odors.At a given time，they had to smell an odor and then rate the intensity （強度） and pleasantness of the odor on a scale from 1 （extremely weak/unpleasant） to 7 （extremely strong/pleasant）.Before they left，the participants needed to leave a blood sample.
After comparing genes of the participants，researchers found all had different smelling abilities and that the differences between these abilities could be traced to certain genes.
According to The New York Times，human beings have nearly 400 genes that directly control receptors （器官） and influence the way these receptors become active.
"Odors …turn on specific receptors，which then tells us if we're smelling a flower，how strong we find it，and whether we like it，" said Casey Trimmer，a geneticist and the lead author of the study. "One small change in the gene for the receptor can change its shape and how well the odor fits，thereby changing the awareness of the odor."
Though genes play a decisive role in our ability to smell，other factors，including attention，past associations and expectations，are important as well.For example，if we love the smell of roses，we are drawn to their smell and pay special attention to it.
But what does our different abilities to sense odors mean？
"Smelling is the most important sense for the rest of the animal kingdom，" said Trimmer.Although，unlike other animals，humans aren't any longer dependent on their sense of smell to find food or detect danger，smell is still a significant sense.There is also evidence that a reduced sense of smell is an early symptom of Alzheimer's disease.
