CAN YOU COOK?This teenager can—and his mum's very happy with him. Tom is like any other teenager. He goes to school, does his homework, meets his friends and enjoys doing sport. But between 5:30 and 6:30 from Monday to Friday,Tom does something different. He cooks dinner for all the family:mum, dad, younger brother Joe and older sister Emma. "I think it's important for teenagers to learn how to cook.Maths and English are important,of course, but they need other skills too to help them in today's world.First I taught Tom how to cook easy meals like pizza or egg and chips. Then he started using recipes in my cookery books.Yesterday he made vegetable soup.It was very good!" Tom's mum says. "I love cooking and I think I'm really good at it.None of my friends cook.I don't know why,it isn't difficult and it's great fun! " Tom says. In the past,Tom didn't help out at home and his mum wasn't very happy with him.Today, things are different and she is very happy.

8."How hard could this be?" I thought before I took part in this year's Hot Chili Pepper(辣椒)Eating Contest(比賽)at the Hot and Spicy Festival. "I have won the contest two times before.I can win for a third time!" Each year, the contest happens three times on a spring weekend in Beijing. On Friday night, there were teams of two people each:one man,and one woman. If one person on a team gave up,then both would lose.Knowing this,I invited my friend Jennifer to be my teammate because she won last year's contest. In this contest, the peppers of each round are spicier(辣的)than the last. The first several rounds were fine enough, just like chewing(咀嚼)on vegetables. But then things got difficult. The last round really got to me.When I got to the Yunnan Ghost Pepper,it felt like a fighter jet was blasting(噴射)fire into my face. Jennifer saw how much trouble I was in,so she told me, "Don't give up,Patrick! You can do it!" These words really helped me.We finished all of our peppers and the other team left standing finally quit(退出).Then,we won! My family has many rules that I have to follow. The main rule,I think,is that I have to try hard at school. My parents want me to do my homework and to tell them about anything(1)
happening at school. If I go out,I need to tell them where I am.If I am late or going somewhere else,I need to tell them. They will be(2)
if I don't. I can come home a little late,about 9 pm,but only if I tell them.I have to go to bed by 10 pm on school nights.If it is a holiday,I can(3)
later than usual at night. Another rule is that I have to(4)
my room.My parents get angry if I leave things around the house.I should(5)
my room clean, although I often break this rule.I think many(6)
like myself like to have our room as "our place".I try to keep it the way I like — a little bit untidy.I also have posters (海報) on the wall. But I don't think my parents would like it if I had pictures of girls up.
