2.When Becca Cotugno ties her running shoes in the morning, she's not alone. In her wake are eight students who have called themselves the "Speed Crew".
Cotugno created the running program to share her passion with students at Alma del Mar Charter School in New Bedford,Massachusetts. With support from her school's headmaster and executive director,Cotugno started the Speed Crew last fall. "I've read articles about how exercise is really good for kids with ADHD (注意缺陷障礙).I thought it'd be a great thing to bring to school," she said, trying to convince them.
Every morning, eight kids put aside 30 minutes before class to get in their miles. After a short warm-up,Cotugno and her crew run 0.2-mile loops (圈) around the school, logging (行進) as many laps as they'd like. The students have learned that five laps can equal one mile and on Friday the group tallies up their weekly miles.Any student who runs more than five miles that week earns a medal.Cotugno says her race medals earned from over the years could "fill a house",so she gives them away to the high-mileage students. Her parents, also runners, have contributed some of their medals, too.
Since the introduction of the program,Cotugno and her colleagues have seen marked improvements in behavior and academics of the Speed Crew members.
Research also supports the use of physical activity in children who struggle with being able to focus.A study published in Pediatrics found that children who exercised often had more white matter in their brains than children who were less fit.White matter is important when it comes to attention and memory.
In the future,Cotugno hopes she will be able to increase the size of the Speed Crew.Right now she's the only adult involved with the program, which requires her to keep the club small.Along with growing membership at Alma del Mar Charter School, she hopes she can inspire other schools to adopt similar programs.
(1)How did Cotugno win her school officials' support for her program?
A.By citing published writings.
B.By presenting doctors' advice.
C.By recalling her own experience.
D.By taking part in the program herself.
(2)What does the underlined part "tallies up" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Matches up with.
B.Makes up for.
C.Adds up.
D.Sets up.
(3)What can we infer about athletic children from the study in Pediatrics?
A.They have a wider range of interests.
B.They tend to be more focused in class.
C.They suffer memory problems more often.
D.They have less white matter in their brains.
(4)What does Cotugno expect of the Speed Crew?
A.It can have an adult member club.
B.It can include more group activities.
C.It can be expanded beyond her school.
D.It can obtain support from other schools.組卷:2引用:1難度:0.5 -
3.Water shortage is one of the world's biggest challenges. The World Health Organization (WHO) thinks one in three people globally do not have easy access to clean water.Desalinating (給……脫鹽) ocean water could help. But currently-available desalination units typically require highpressure pumps (泵) to push water through filters (過濾器),which makes it difficult to reduce their size without influencing the energy-efficiency of the device.Meanwhile, they are too expensive to set up widely.
Now,Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researchers have developed a convenient desalination machine.Unlike traditional desalination units that need replaceable filters, the MIT machine uses electricity to remove the salt and other small things from the ocean water.More importantly, the suitcase-sized device needs less power to run than a cell phone charger. It can also be powered by a small solar panel that costs less than $50.The lack of filters and the low electricity requirements make the machine extremely cheap to set up. "Even a kindergarten student can carry and use the desalination unit," said one researcher. "Ease of use was one of the main motivations for creating the device."
After running lab experiments using water with different salinity and turbidity (cloudiness) levels, they field-tested the device at Boston's Carson Beach. The researchers set the box near the shore and put the feed tube into the water. In about half an hour, the device had filled a plastic drinking cup with clear, drinkable water.
The researchers believe their invention can deliver drinking water meeting WHO quality standards with a push of a button.Meanwhile,a smartphone app allows the user to control the unit wirelessly and receive real-time data on power consumption and water salinjye.aiy.It also sends out information when the water is drinkable.
The MIT team is now exploring ways to bring their portable machine to market. They believe it will benefit residents of small islands or those running away from natural disasters. It could also be very useful for sailors on cargo ships and small groups of soldiers on long-term military missions.
(1)What do we know about the current desalination units?
A.They cannot work efficiently.
B.They are usually large in size.
C.They were developed by MIT researchers.
D.They cannot stand high-pressure conditions.
(2)What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The working process of the new desalination device.
B.The major components of the new desalination device.
C.The original aim of the new desalination device.
D.The advantages of the new desalination device.
(3)What makes the researchers confident in their invention?
A.That it is user-friendly and effective.
B.That it can provide lots of real-time data.
C.That it can be supported by several smartphone apps.
D.That it has successfully passed many lab experiments.
(4)What does the last paragraph tell us about the new desalination device?
A.Its influence on different people.
B.Its future development plan.
C.Its time to enter the market.
D.Its intended uses.組卷:2引用:1難度:0.5

9.Price of a Miracle Tess was an eight-year-old girl when she heard her mom and dad talking about her little brother,Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money.
Only a very costly operation could save him now and it was looking like there was no one to lend them the money. She heard Dad say to her tearful mom with desperation, "Only a miracle can save him now."
Tess went to her bedroom and poured all the change she had saved out on the floor and counted it carefully:47 cents. She slipped out of home and made her way to Rexall's Drug Store. She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy at this moment. Finally, she took a quarter from her pocket and banged it on the glass counter. That did it ! "And what do you want?" the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. "I'm talking to my brother from Chicago Medical University whom I haven't seen in ages," he said without waiting for a reply to his question.
"Well,I want to talk to you about my brother," Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. "He's really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle."
"We don't sell miracles here, little girl.I'm sorry but I can't help you," the pharmacist said, softening a little."Listen,I have the money to pay for it.If it isn't enough,I will get the rest.Just tell me how much it costs."Tess answered with a blind faith.
The pharmacist's brother was a well-dressed man.He stooped down and asked the little girl, "What kind of a miracle does your brother need?" "I don't know," Tess replied with her eyes welling up.
"I just know he's really sick and Mom says he needs an operation. But my dad can't pay for it,so I want to use my money."
