• 19．Every town has a Grinch（令人掃興的人）and every Grinch has his own story.In the town of Mayfield，Mr.Carlisle was this kind of person.Long ago，he had a lovely daughter and a beautiful wife，but the two beloved ones disappeared from his world accidentally and unexpectedly，leaving him alone to this day，angry，miserable and separated.
      He lived alone in a little white house directly across the street from the field where the weekend market was held.On the last weekend before Christmas there would be a Christmas Market.He hated it.
      He sat on his porch（門廊）and set his mean wrinkled face toward the families crossing the street in front of his house.Their talk and their laughter angered him.Many times he had written to the government demanding they do away with the market.
      The Christmas Market was even worse.Cheerful tunes came from loud speakers while some fool dressed as a Santa rang a bell announcing his presence.Kids screamed and jumped all over.Worst of all was that tall Christmas tree that stood on the other side of the road.He hated it most of all.Every year on the day it appeared，he shot off an angry letter to the government asking it to be removed.It remained tall and directly opposite his front door.
      On the Christmas Market weekend，Mr.Carlisle stood on his porch to keep an eye on the goings-on.He calculated every misstep he could find，preparing in his mind all the complaints he would have to the powers.Shouting to everyone who passed by，he had his presence known.Most people ignored him.
      When four-year-old Bethie Simpson passed by，she couldn't help but stop and stare back at the old man.Tentatively（試探性地）she smiled and waved in his direction before her father pulled her away.Mr.Carlisle almost smiled back at the lovely little girl.But years of heartache had made him mean.Putting his half smile away，he focused his hard glare on the Christmas tree.It swung unsteadily.
