          • 1.Bikini Atoll,Micronesia
This was the main area of nuclear testing in the Pacific. There were 23 tests on this small island from 1946 to 1958.When you have flown in from Honolulu, you might be surprised at what you find.Despite its nuclear past, the area looks like an undestroyed place. Thanks to a recent rise in tourism, popular activities include diving and fishing off the beautiful coastline.
            The Panama Canal Railway
The world's first transcontinental(橫貫大陸的) railway was built between 1850 and 1855.It not only connected two cities-Panama City and the port of Colon―but also two oceans一the Pacific and the Atlantic. The line had been in disrepair for many years until areas of land were cleared and a new track was laid over a period of 18 months. In July 2001 it was reopened, offering a 45-minute ride through a forested area.
            Gorongosa National Park,Mozambique
In 1971,this wildlife park attracted 12,000 visitors who wanted to see the biggest lion population in Africa. From 1983 to 1992 the park was turned into an environmental disaster area during the Mozambican Civil War.After the war,the number of large animals in the park had fallen by 95%.Now,buffalo(水牛) have been reintroduced and the park has received donations from businesspeople and pop stars. You won't find cheetahs or rhinos back in the park yet,but the beautiful Mount Gorongosa(1,863 m) is perfect for hikers.
            Mount Elgon,Kenya
For years, border disagreements between Kenya and Uganda meant it was impossible to walk to this volcano. Now the situation has been eased,so this far corner of East Africa has reopened.Climbers can enjoy the fantastic view from the top of Mount Elgon(4,321 m) but perhaps the most interesting feature is the caves. Some are over 60 m wide and run 200 m into the mountain.

          • 2.As an undergraduate,my heart beat strongly whenever I raised my hand to answer questions raised by professors.I knew the material, but the thought of getting the answer wrong in front of all my classmates was frightening.Later,in graduate school,I especially feared giving presentations about my research.
Unlocking the key to my confidence was much more difficult than I expected. But perhaps I could find a creative solution that would work for me.The breakthrough came during the month before my qualifying exam—a major turning point in my Ph.D.program that caused waves of self-doubt—when I listened to a Lady Gaga album titled Joanne.I noticed it sounded completely different from her past albums. She had switched from her usual dance-pop to soft rock and country, and her clothing had changed as well.I was surprised.Lady Gaga was taking a huge professional risk, but she was confident in the music and herself.
That got me thinking:Could I do something similar before I stepped on stage? My naturally shy and quiet personality was not exactly suited to public speaking,so I thought about the image I wanted my professional self to show.I pictured a clear voice and a tall, commanding stance(站姿).I imagined myself as the expert in the room.
I experimented with the idea during a practice presentation at home.I stood next to my computer in professional clothing, speaking loudly—a sharp change from my usual practice habits, which involved sitting at my desk in pajamas(睡衣) speaking quietly. It was a promising start.I decided to give my new presenter character a try at my qualifying exam.
When I walked into the exam room,I was pleased to discover I had a newfound confidence.Sure,I was nervous, but an unfamiliar sense of calm rushed through me as soon as I began my talk.I took ownership of the work I presented. Finally,I was the expert.Since then,my presenter character has given me confidence during many talks and interviews, and I've become more comfortable taking on this role when necessary.

(1)What was difficult for the author when she was an undergraduate?

            A.Never giving up.
            B.Being confident.
            C.Giving presentations.
            D.Dealing with schoolwork.
(2)How did Lady Gaga influence the author?

            A.She changed her career.
B.She helped her find her strengths.
C.She inspired her to show a different self.
D.She improved her tastes for country music.
(3)What did the author think of her change?

A.It was too risky for her.
            B.It was challenging but worthwhile.
C.It caused her to pay a high price.
D.It made her a creative presenter.
(4)Which of the following can best describe the author?

            A.Broad-minded and polite.
            B.Independent and traditional.
            C.Determined and strong-willed.
            D.Forward-thinking and talkative.

          • 3.A 14-year-old with a vocabulary of four or five simple words may not sound impressive. However,it sure is when the speaker happens to be a killer whale! The amazing discovery was shown in a study published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
The research team, led by Jose Zamorano-Abramson,a researcher at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, began recording the killer whale, who lives at Marineland in Antibes,France,in 2014.The research was done to test the theory(理論) that killer whales learn sounds from social settings.Wikie, who had spent most of her life at the aquatic park, was used to imitating(模仿) her trainer's actions in exchange for fish, and was, therefore, fit for the job.
The team began by presenting Wikie with the sounds she was already used to.They then presented new sounds the killer whale had never been introduced to before. These included imitating the sound of an elephant call. And Wikie stepped up to the challenge(挑戰) each time.
After that, the researchers introduced Wikie to a few simple words:"Ah,""hello,""bye-bye,""one-two-three,"and the name of her trainer,"Amy."To their surprise, she imitated"hello"immediately.Though the others took a little longer, the smart whale was finally able to imitate them all.
Wikie,of course, does not understand what she is saying. She is just copying the sounds to get the reward that follows every imitation. However,it once again shows the whales' intelligence."Imitation skills allow animals in the wild to learn from others.Learning through trial and error(反復試驗) can be very expensive. You can die just trying poisonous fish, for example, for killer whales. But if you learn from the experience of others it's safer,"Abrahamson says. The researcher believes animals that have this ability can get used to changes in their environment more easily and increase their chances of survival.

(1)Why was Wikie chosen for the research?

A.She was cleverer than other killer whales.
B.She had got used to life at the aquatic park.
C.She had been trained to do imitations before.
D.She was always working alongside human trainers.
(2)Why did the researchers introduce Wikie to simple words?

A.To see if she could copy human sounds.
B.To test what she would do to get the reward.
C.To check if she could tell human sounds from elephant calls.
D.To find out if she could understand the sounds she was making.
(3)What can we learn from Abrahamson's words?

A.It's never a good idea to try something new.
B.Learning from others can cause serious problems.
C.Imitation skills are important for animals in the wild.
D.Animals have to be prepared to get used to changes.
(4)Where is the text probably from?

            A.A research plan.
            B.A news report.
            C.A chemistry textbook.
            D.A guidebook.

Monday started out great.I woke up on time, ate breakfast and did some last minute studying for my first hour math test.I was confident of getting good grades. Then I left my house.Ten minutes later,I was settled with my friends on the school bus.We were busy chatting about how we spent our weekend. At one stop,Fat Ryan got on hurriedly. He tripped over someone's foot accidentally and THUMP!He fell flat onto the floor.
Every one of us on the bus looked on and laughed crazily.Ryan struggled to his feet, dusted the jacket and made his way to an empty seat.He tried to laugh with us,but his face was burning with embarrassment. The rest of the morning flew by.I did well in my math test.I read two more chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird in English class. It wasn't long before there went the lunch bell.I met my friends from the cheerleading team in the dining hall. Then I couldn't help but notice Ryan a few tables away, sitting all alone. He caught me looking.I smiled at him quickly and looked away.
When we finished eating,we headed out to the courtyard to practice a cheer we would do at that night's football game. After a little practice,we nailed the cheer,so we decided we only needed to go through it one last time.Again, just like the rest of my day so far,the cheer was going great.I raised my leg for one last toe touch.RIIPPP!I felt my jeans split down the middle of my backside.
I froze.I had no idea what to do but stand still. Then I heard people burst out laughing, and I saw them pointing at my torn jeans.Trying to cover myself with my hands,I tried to laugh too,but I felt tears began to well up in my eyes.
