19．The three-point contest at the community center was scheduled for the following Saturday，April 20.Devin was an excellent shooter，and his friends Jordan and Tara thought he should enter and believed that he could be the champion this year.On the morning of April 12，Devin came to the basketball court to practice accompanied by his friends. "So how does this contest work？"Devin asked.
"Fifteen shots，" Jordan said.
"It's timed，" said Tara. "You get one minute."
Jordan pointed out the spots where each contestant would shoot：the two corners，the top of the key，and two spots in between."You move around the arc（弧形）as quickly as you can，"he said. " Three shots from each position." Jordan bounced a ball to Devin as he walked toward the corner."I placed fourth last year，" Jordan said. " Made six shots，but I didn't hit anything from the comers."Devin frowned（皺眉）.The corner was a tough shot.No help from the backboard.
"Let's give it a try，" he said.
Tara counted down- "Three，two，one" and Devin fired up a shot.It clanked （發出哐當聲） off the rim （邊緣）.He then launched a second ball，a third.….all failed.Devin rushed to the second spot.He hurried to take three shots.Failed again.Eventually，as he finished in the corner，he got only 2 of 15.
"You rushed every shot，" Tara said.
Jordan agreed. "You were shooting those balls so fast I thought they were burning your hands." "You have to make the same smooth motion every time，" Tara said.
"The guy named Jerry who won last year didn't even finish his round，" Jordan said.He took his time and made 8 of 13."
Devin blushed （臉紅）， "I get it." He knew the basics：square your feet and shoulders toward the basket，hold the ball to the chest level，jump straight up，and release the shot at the height of the jump.But he'd been in too much of a hurry to follow those steps correctly.
