          • 12.The whale,as big as a locomotive (火車頭) jumped out of the water, spinning (旋轉(zhuǎn)) as though for joy, before jumping back under the waves. We watched the scene (場(chǎng)景) silently in astonishment, never having been so close to such a huge,fast-moving creature. It seemed almost possible to count the small shellfish on the whale's skin.
In early December, gray whales, blue whales, and others had just started heading around the tip of Baja California,Mexico, moving as a community from the Pacific Ocean to the Sea of Cortez. It's in that protected waterway that pregnant whales give birth to their babies.Other whale babies, born the year before, could be seen sailing behind. All whale babies get two trips like this with their mom before they're ready to start having babies of their own and making the journey on their own.
We're in one of several small powerboats, sent out by Scuba Caribe, which carries on such tours in Cabo San Lucas. The whales seemed to be,at times, less than 100 feet from our boat when they rushed out of the wjye.aier.At other times, they would get much closer and swim beside the boat.
"What if one lands on us?" a woman next to me wondered.Fernando Del Toro, the Destination Manager of Scuba Caribe said,"We haven't had any incident (事件)of whales jumping over our boats as we always keep our distance. We're sure they themselves are probably careful not to crash into boats.Such an accident would probably also cause them much harm."
"Everyone can enjoy this magical trip," said Del Toro."However,we do not recommend (推薦) it for kids under 5 years old," he added.
Though conditions on the water vary, our trip was wonderful.Even when the boat sped up to catch up with the whales, there was little need to "hang on",and some of us remained standing throughout most of the trip.Still, you may want to pack medicine for those who might get seasick while bouncing (顛簸行進(jìn)) along the waves.

(1)How does the author start the text?

            A.By telling a story.
            B.By asking questions.
            C.By describing a scene.
            D.By giving background information.
(2)What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.A description of the author's journey.
B.A list of best places for whale-watching.
C.An introduction to the travelling of whales.
            D.A suggestion on taking a whale-watching tour.
(3)What does Del Toro say about whale-watching?

A.It is suitable for all ages.
            B.It is much too dangerous.
C.It may cause serious damage to wildlife.
D.It should be done from a proper distance.
            (4)How was the author's trip?

            A.It was smooth in general.
            B.It was tiring in particular.
C.It was destroyed by a storm.
D.It was terrible due to his seasickness.

          • 13.If you're reading this, you were probably born in the 2000s.The oh-ohs (00后).The 21st century. That would make you young, creative, connected, global, and no doubt smart.Maybe good-looking,too.Right?But what do other people think about your generation?
Some adults worry that you're more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the "face-down generation" because you use your phone so much and they wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today's teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies (自拍) to become successful in real life-or "IRL",as you would say?
Other adults worry that today's youth are spoilt (寵壞的) and don't want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by "helicopter parents" who were always there to guide and help them with a busy schedule filled with homework and extra-curricular activities such as dancing, drawing,or sports. With partners who do everything for them, today's youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face-down generation need a heads-up?Well,probably not.The fact is that many of today's teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be enthusiastic (熱情的) and willing to become leaders.
More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls' rights to go to school.
So if you're one of the oh-ohs,there's reason to be hopeful about the future.
Things are looking up for the face-down generation.Chances are that you will do GR8(great) and LOL (laugh out loud).

(1)Today's teenagers are thought of as the face-down generation because
            .
            A.They are busy texting
B.They use their phones a lot
C.They deal with school and family with their phones
D.They become successful with their phones
(2)What does "helicopter parents" mean in Paragraph 3?

A.Parents who prefer to live like teenagers.
B.Parents who often fly everywhere for their business.
C.Parents who do dancing, drawing or sports with their children.
D.Parents who always guide and help children with homework and extra-curricular activities.
(3)What does the writer think about the face-down generation?

            A.They are annoyed.
            B.They are powerful.
            C.They are spoilt.
            D.They are positive.
(4)What's the best title of this passage?

            A.The face-down generation.
            B.The young generation.
            C.The generation gap.
            D.The future generation.

          • 14.During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people under lockdown feel lonely and bored. "There is a loneliness epidemic," said John Dattilo from Pennsylvania State University,US.
So he,together with an international team of researchers, studied how to reduce loneliness and increase positive feelings during the pandemic.
According to their new study, reducing loneliness has something to do with doing enjoyable activities that require both concentration (注意力) and skill.
When people are absorbed in what they are doing, they enter a state called "flow",Dattilo explained. "Flow can be achieved by doing activities that we value and that requires us to concentrate fully to use our skills."
To achieve a state of flow, there must be a balance between the challenge of the task and your skill level. For example,if you' re trying to create a complex (復(fù)雜的) computer program but your skill level is low, then you're likely to feel stressed instead of achieving"flow".On the contrary (相反地),if the task is too easy, then boredom will set in and "flow" will not appear, either.
If you have artistic skills, for example, playing the piano or painting can lead to flow.So can things like skiing, writing and storytelling, depending on who you are "When we center a state of flow,we become focused, and we experience momentary enjoyment," Dattilo said. "When we l cave a state of flow,we are often surprised by how much time has passed." However, watching television usually doesn't help people enter flow, according to Dattilo, because there aren't any challenges.
"People tend to thrive (茁壯成長(zhǎng)) on healthy activities and challenge," said Dattilo. "We hope this research will help people live fuller, happier, healthier lives"

            (1)What did Dattilo study?
