          • 9.There is an old saying that America and Britain are "two nations divided by a common language." No one knows exactly who said this, but it reflects the way many Brits feel about American English. But are American and British English really so different?
               Vocabulary
The most obvious difference between American and British English is vocabulary. There are hundreds of everyday words that are different. For example,Americans go on vacation while Brits go on holidays;New Yorkers live in apartments while Londoners live in flats. There are far more examples than we can talk about here.Fortunately, most Americans and Brits can usually guess the meaning through the context of a sentence.
               Past Tense Verbs
You'll also find some differences with past forms of irregular verbs. The past tense of "learn" in American English is "learned".British English has the option of "learned" or "learnt".The same rule applies to "dreamed" and "dreamt", "burned" and "burnt",and "leaned" and "leant".Americans tend to use the -ed ending;Brits tend to use the-tending.
               Spelling
There are hundreds of slight spelling differences between British and American English.Noah Webster,an author, politician and teacher, made an effort to reform English spelling in the late 1700s.
Webster wanted to spell words the way they sounded. You can see Webster's legacy(遺產) in the American spelling of words like color (from colour),honor (from honour),and labor(from labour).
               Not So Different After All
British and American English have far more similarities than differences. With the exception of some regional dialects, most Brits and Americans can understand each other without too much difficulty. They watch each other's TV shows, sing each other's songs and read each other's books. They even make fun of each others' accents.

(1)Which of the following is a group of American words?

            A.Vacation;holiday.
            B.Apartment;flat.
            C.Vacation;apartment.
            D.Holiday;flat.
(2)The underlined word "option" in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by

            A.choice
            B.change
            C.structure
            D.use
(3)What do we know about British and American English from the last paragraph?

A.They both have some strange words.
B.They are affecting people using them.
C.They connect people of the two countries.
D.Their differences have little effect on communication.
(4)What can be the best title for the text?

A.Ways to tell British English from American English.

C.Development of British and American English.
D.Difficulty for Brits and Americans to understand each other.

          • 10.A large number of India's urban(城區的) poor kids receive little or no education.Even if they enter a formal school, their dropout rates are very high.Door Step School (DSS) aims to bridge the huge gap between these kids and education.
True to its name,Door Step School sets up a school right at the doorstep of kids who can't get formal education due to a variety of reasons.
The team at DSS follows a direct model-they set up a classroom in any area,a footpath, construction site,or underpass, where they foresee the greatest need. They look for proper locations, and after making sure that enough resources are in place, they accept students in the area.DSS provides lessons of different levels. The organization even tries to provide classes in the local language,or whatever the students choose.
Another interesting project of DSS is a school on wheels. It uses a bus that has been changed into a classroom, which holds about 25 kids at a time.
Since it was started in 1988,Door Step School has spread from Mumbai to the neighbouring city of Pune in Maharashtra, covering a larger area and number of kids. Now DSS has a team of more than 1,000 volunteers and teachers who change more than 70,000 lives each year.
DSS doesn't end at kids. The organisation educates parents on the importance of sending their kids to school. Its efforts have brought education to thousands of students in the last two decades.Their belief in education for all has not only changed children's lives but also continued the fight against one of the biggest problems India faces. All children have the right to an education, and DSS is providing just that.

(1)Why is the organization named "Door Step School"?

A.It is different from formal schools.
B.It is usually built near students' houses.
C.It sets up schools in areas with large populations.
D.It provides education wherever children can easily go.
(2)What can we learn about the lessons provided by "Door Step School"?

A.They are better than formal school lessons.
B.They include whatever a school can provide.
C.They suit children at different levels.
D.They are easy for kids to learn by themselves.
(3)What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?

A.The development of Door Step School.
B.The foundation of Door Step School.
C.The management of Door Step School.
D.The future of Door Step School.
(4)It can be inferred that one of the biggest problems India faces is that

            A.there are no formal schools
            B.many children receive no education
            C.children refuse to attend schools
D.the country is short of teachers

          • 11.Have you ever been to a national park like Yellowstone,Yosemite or Glacier? How about the moon?
That's a trick question,of course.First of all,if you're a kid,I'm absolutely certain you've never been to the moon. After all, only a dozen grown-ups have ever walked on the moon's surface. And the last one did it in 1972.Second,the moon is not a national park. But if two US women get their way,it might become one.Eddie Johnson and Donna Edwards have introduced a bill (法案)that would create the Apollo Lunar Landing Sites National Historic Park.
Why should a park be on the moon? After all,you can't just get into a car and drive there on vacation. But in the not-so-distant future, you might be able to fly there.Private(私人的) companies are working on ways to transport tourists to the moon. And there are concerns that some careless visitors might mess up some of the historic sites up there - sites such as the astronauts' footprints and other things they left behind.
Some people think the bill is a good idea. "It's a good idea because the moon's environment is very fragile(易損的)," said David Paige,a scientist. "Any disturbance to the soil there will last for millions of years."
But others think it's kind of silly. For one thing, how are you going to make sure that the moon's historic sites are truly protected? After all, there are no park rangers (國家公園管理員)to enforce the law up there. And there's another big problem:the moon does not belong to the United States - or any other country, for that mater. So in order for the United States to create a national park on the moon,it would need to get permission from lots of other countries. And that might not be as simple as it might sound.
Still,Johnson doesn't consider her bill frivolous. "I don't think that there is anything far-fetched about protecting and preserving such items and such a place," she said.

(1)What is the function of the two questions asked in the first paragraph?

A.To introduce the topic the author wants to write on.
B.To remind readers to care for the technology
C.To introduce a special national park on the moon.
D.To help develop readers' interest in national parks.
            (2)According to David Paige,

A.tourists are not allowed to disturb the soil on the moon
B.creating a national park on the moon will be meaningful
C.a national park will be created on the moon sooner or later
D.the moon's environment will be ruined if tourists arrive there
(3)Those who are against this bill think that

A.other countries should be invited to build a national park.
B.the U.S.government have no right to build a national park.
C.tourists' visits to the moon will certainly ruin the historic sites
D.policemen should be sent to the moon before tourists arrive
(4)The underlined word "frivolous" in the last paragraph can be replaced by "
            ".
            A.serious
            B.foolish
            C.wasteful
