          • 6.I believe in holding onto traditions because they helped our family flourish(興旺)in a new country. But this concept is more concretely expressed this way:I believe in feeding monkeys on my birthday - something I've done without fail for 35 years.
In the Burmese jungle, monkeys are as common as pigeons. But in America, feeding monkeys means breaking the rules.
As a kid,I thought that was cool.I learned English through watching bad television shows and expected that I was the chosen warrior(勇士) sent to defend my family.Dad and I would go to the zoo early in the morning, just the two of us.When the Coast was clear,I would throw my peanuts to the monkeys.
I never had to explain myself until my 18th birthday. It was the first year I didn't go with my father.I went with my friends and arrived 10 minutes after the zoo gates closed."Please," I begged the zookeeper,"I feed monkeys for my family, not for me.Can't you make an exception?""Go find a pet store," she said.
If only it were so easy. That time,I got lucky.I found out that a high school classmate trained the monkeys for the movie Out of Africa so he allowed me to feed his monkeys.Once a man with a pet monkey suspected that my story was a ploy -that I was an animal rights activist out to liberate his monkey.Another time,a zoo told me that outsiders could not feed the monkeys without violating the zookeepers' collective bargaining agreement.Once in a pet store,I managed to feed a marmoset(狨)being kept in a birdcage.Another time,I was asked to wear a special suit to feed a laboratory monkey.
It's rarely easy and, yet, somehow I've found a way to feed a monkey every year since I was born.

(1)Why has the author fed monkeys all these years?

            A.To please his father.
            B.To develop a new hobby.
            C.To celebrate his birthday.
D.To keep up his family tradition.
(2)How did the author and his father feed the zoo monkeys?

A.They did it in a secret way.
            B.They pretended to be warriors.
C.They did it with the help of friends.
            D.They got the zookeeper's permission.
(3)What does the underlined word "ploy" in Paragraph 5 mean?

            A.Joke.
            B.Trick.
            C.Excuse.
            D.Adventure.
(4)How is the fifth paragraph mainly developed?

            A.By providing examples.
            B.By giving explanations.
            C.By following time order.
            D.By making comparisons.

          • 7.When we found him,he was a sorry sight. His clothes were torn, his hands bleeding. Before we reached him,we saw him fall.He lay a moment. Then he pulled himself to his feet, walked unsteadily(搖擺地)a few yards through the woods and fell again. After we got him out,we went back to find the gun that he had thrown down. His tracks showed.jye.ai for two days he bad circled in the forest, within 200 yards of the road. His senses were so dulled by fear and tiredness that he did not heat the cars going by or see the lights at night. We found him just in time.
This man, like others before him,had simply been frightened when he knew he was lost. What had been a near disaster might have turned out as only a pleasant walk,if he had made a few preparations before he stepped from the highway or off a known path(小徑).
Whatever sense of direction that a man may have,it's still largely a question of observation.A skilled woodsman always keeps an eye on his surroundings. He notes the shape of a mountain, the direction water flows through a swamp(沼澤),and the way a tree leans across a path. With these in mind,he is still likely to turn around many times, but he is seldom lost.
There are exceptions,of course, and once in a while a man does come across some strange problem that puts him into the "lost" situation.A rainstorm may catch him without a compass in his pocket.Darkness may find him in a rough area, where travel is dangerous without a light.
When this happens, the normal first reaction is the fear of being laughed at as a result of his poor knowledge in the woods. He may also be concerned about the inconvenience that he will cause his friends when he doesn't show up.This false pride may lead him to keep on the move in a false effort to find his way against all difficulties.
The person who thinks ahead is seldom in great danger. He'll be safe if he observes carefully, thinks ahead, and remains calm.

(1)The writer suggested that if the man had not been found

A.he would have been shot by a gun
            B.he would have become confused
C.he would have been attacked by wild animals
D.he would have been in great danger
(2)According to the text,if a person gets lost in the forest,at the very beginning,
            .
A.he will worry about being laughed at
B.he will push himself to find his way out
C.he will feel sorry that he didn't prepare well enough
D.he will feel it is convenient to ask for help from his friends
(3)The writer tells the story of the lost man as an example of people who
            .
A.go into the woods by themselves
B.keep their head when they are in trouble
C.a(chǎn)re frightened when they think they are lost
D.don't know bow to signal for help properly
(4)What is probably the best title for the passage?

A.A Man Lost in the Woods
            B.Timely Rescue in the Woods

          • 8.Many people struggle to keep their weight in check as getting older. Now new research at Karolinska Institute in Sweden has found that lipid turnover(脂質(zhì)代謝)in the fat tissue(組織)decreases when people are getting older, which makes it easier to put on weight, even if we eat less or exercise more than before.
The scientists studied the fat cells in 54 men and women over an average period of 13 years. In that time, all subjects, regardless of whether they gained or lost weight, showed decreases in lipid turnover in the fat tissue, and that is the rate at which lipid(or fat)in the fat cells is removed and stored. Those who didn't make up for that by eating fewer calories gained weight by an average of 20 percent, according to the study done together with researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden and the University of Lyon in France.
The researchers also examined lipid turnover in 41 women who underwent bariatric surgery(減肥手術(shù)) and how the lipid turnover rate affected their ability to keep the weight of four to seven years after surgery. The result showed only those who had a low rate before the surgery managed to increase their lipid turnover and maintain their weight loss.
"For the first time, the results showed that processes in our fat tissue rule changes in body weight during aging in a way that is independent of other factors," says Peter Amer, one of the study's main authors. "This could open up new ways to deal with obesity (肥胖)."
Earlier studies have shown one way to speed up the lipid turnover in the fat tissue is to exercise more. This new research supports this and further shows the long-term result of weight-loss surgery would improve if combined with increased physical activity.
Obesity and obesity-related diseases have become a global problem.Understanding the change in lipids and what rules the size of the fat mass in humans has never been so significant to us.Therefore, let's expect the researchers to have more findings in this field to help us keep a healthy body.

            (1)What's the study about?

A.How physical activities change body weight.
B.Why people gain weight during aging.
            C.Why people enjoy losing weight.
D.How a balanced diet benefits us.
(2)What can we learn from Paragraphs 2 and 3?

A.Men have a much higher lipid turnover rate than women.
B.The amount of fat tissue decreases with people getting older.
C.People with a low lipid turnover rate can lose weight surgically.
D.The study result was discovered by Swedish scientists independently.
(3)What can be inferred from Peter Amer's words in Paragraph 4?

A.Scientists understand the lipid turnover rate for the first time.
B.Doing more exercise will surely increase the lipid turnover rate.
C.The lipid turnover has little connection with body weight.
D.Knowing about the lipid turnover rate may help treat obesity.
(4)What is the author's attitude towards the research?

            A.Favorable.
            B.Surprised.
            C.Negative.
            D.Doubtful.
