          • 1.You've got to get an early start tomorrow, but you're not sleepy yet.Blame your brain,at least in part.Yet that same brain is still under construction. And much of that important work takes place while you sleep. Here's what's happening and why it matters.
Today's lifestyle is one reason for late bedtimes. Many teens don't finish with after-school activities,part-time jobs, dinner, and homework until 10 p.m.jye.ai later.Add in some time for relaxing, especially time for screens, and bedtime may not roll around until 11 p.m.jye.ai nearly midnight. In response, the brain cuts back melatonin(褪黑素),a hormone that promotes sleep.Even without modern technology, though, teens change their daily cycle for sleeping, waking, and various other activities.
The rest of the world doesn't change, however. So most teens must head to school before they've gotten the 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. And that's a serious public health problem. For one thing, lack of sleep makes it harder to pay attention. When studies compared teens who had earlier and later school start times, they found that those who had more time to sleep did better in class. They also suffered fewer accidents in sports, driving, and other activities.Lack of sleep could also hurt mental health.Studies have found an inverse correlation(負相關)between teens' amount of sleep and depression and other mental illnesses. As sleep time went down, the risks for the mental illnesses went up.Beyond that, teens lacking in sleep report more relationship problems and feelings of inadequacy.
Lots of issues remain for sleep researchers to explore. For now, though, studies are clear:Teens' brains need sleep.

          • 2.Trash and garbage are other words for waste. In San Francisco, they are also words for art.A local recycling(回收)company, called Recology, created a program to give artists the opportunity to reuse unwanted objects.Artists are paid to work for four months on changing things like old tires and toys.
Ma Li,one of the artists at the center,is working on a project that includes plastic bottles and cloth. She is turning them into sculptures(雕塑).She says she learned recycling from her parents while growing up in China in the 1980s.
San Francisco artist Michael Arcega works with recycled wood and old leather belts(皮帶).His artwork shows what he says is the wasteful culture of the American people. He says looking through the trash is not easy.It is hard to separate what is useful and what is really garbage.
A gallery(美術陳列室) in Los Angeles is exhibiting some of the art from the San Francisco project. The show includes sculptures from old metal and saws (鋸子)cut to look like trees.Los Angeles gallery owner Liz Gordon says artists have a history of recycling. "People who don't have resources find supplies from garbage and have been using them for many years."
Artist Ma Li says these art works have a message. "So everyone can come together to actually make a change in their daily life to save the environment and resources."
Mike Sangiacomo heads the recycling company. He says he hopes to see as much waste as possible reused. "Along the way,if some of it is made into some fun pieces of art and draws people's attention to the problem,we think it's a great way to do something that's good for our business, good for our community, and good for society." The project shows how a little imagination can change one person's trash into another's art work.

          • 3.    Dog owners walked about 23 minutes longer each day than non-dog owners In a new study, dog owners took 2,760 additional steps-compared to people who didn't have a dog at home.Bu here's the real good news:That extra exercise was done at a moderate(適度的)pace, which means it could help adults meet their recommended weekly totals for physical activity.
The research, published in BMC Public Health, focused on adults 65 and older, who tend to be less active than younger people. The study included 43 dog owners and 43 non-dog owners, all of whom were monitored continuously for three week-long periods. When they compared the two groups, the researchers found that dog ownership was associated with a large, potentially health-improving effect.
Dog owners walked about 23 minutes longer each day than non-dog owners,119 minutes versus 96 minutes on average. They also took an additional 2,760 steps, and had eight fewer continuous periods of sitting down. Most of that extra walking was done at moderate pace, defined as 100 or more steps a minute.Dog owners walked at this pace for 32 minutes a day, versus just 11 minutes a day for non-dog owners.
The World Health Organization(WHO)recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of physical activity a week. This increased walking time alone could just about satisfy that requirement, say the researchers-so it makes total sense that 87 percent of dog owners in the study met these guidelines, versus just 47 percent of non-dog owners.
Co-author Nancy Gee says that pet ownership may help older adults get more activity or maintain their current activity level for a longer period of time. "This could improve their chances of a better quality of life, improved or maintained cognition(認知),and perhaps, even overall longevity(壽命)," she said.
Here at Health,we'll add that caring for pets has been shown to have plenty of other physical and mental health benefits,as well.As animal lovers ourselves,we're happy to add one more to the list.

(1)What can we learn about the research?

A.It was targeted on old people.
B.It was sponsored by the WHO.
C.It had an undesirable effect on dog owners.
D.It took the mental health of dog owners into consideration.
(2)What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3?

A.To present the results of the research.
B.To show the guidelines of the research.
C.To describe the process of doing the research.
D.To explain the reasons for conducting the research.
(3)What does Nancy Gee think of owning a dog?

            A.It is too expensive.
            B.It is time-consuming.
C.It enables older adults to live a healthy life.
D.It helps young adults to keep a healthy routine.
(4)What is the best title for the text?

            A.Non-pet owners enjoy more pleasure
            B.Animal lovers are more generous
