12.Leaving India for the United Kingdom to pursue my research career,I felt more out of place than before. At work,I separated myself from the discussions, let alone putting forward my opinions.I was afraid my colleagues would see me through and realize how weak I really felt. Some mornings, just stepping out of my room and going into the lab seemed a challenging task.
That began to change after a quiet breakdown in the lab urged me to contact the university?s mental health services.I was advised to attend a concert by a famous singer from my motherland. There I was in the crowded concert hall, surrounded by strangers — all of us clapping and singing the familiar songs.
Soon,I planned a day trip to a charming city a few hours away.As I took pictures of the beautiful surroundings, and enjoyed a lemonade there,I realized nobody was really paying any attention to me.My confidence grew as I enjoyed more local day trips. My growing self-confidence carried over to work, where I started to speak up and put forward my opinions.I began to ask questions during departmental meetings.
So,when an important conference relevant to our research came around,I felt comfortable registering to attend on my own.Not only did I meet the speakers, but I also introduced myself to other attendees and industry representatives, chatting about their products. The experience inspired me to critically evaluate my own professional interests.
Since then,I have had the confidence to move to other countries, enthusiastic about new opportunities.Traveling alone made me realize that I have the competence to grow and succeed, just like everyone around me,and it helped me get rid of the weight of self-doubt that used to hold me back.

A.He benefited much from traveling.

13.Clothing rental is a hot new industry and retailers (零售商) are demanding to get on board in hopes of attracting shoppers who care about our planet.
But is renting fashion actually more environmentally-friendly than buying it,and if so,how much more?Journalist and author Elizabeth Cline investigated this question and concluded that it?s not as sustainable (可持續(xù)的) as it seems.
Take shipping, for example, which has to go two ways if an item is rented — receiving and returning.Cline writes that consumer transportation has the second largest carbon footprint of our collective fashion habit after manufacturing (生產(chǎn)).
She writes, "An item ordered online and then returned can send out 20 kilograms of carbon each way,and increases up to 50 kilograms for rush shipping.By comparison, the carbon impact of a pair of jeans purchased from a physical store and washed and worn at home is 33.4 kilograms, according to a 2015 study by Levi?s."
Then there?s the burden of washing, which has to happen for every item when it?s returned, even though it was not worn. For most rental services, this usually means dry-cleaning,a high-impact and polluting process. All the rental services that Cline looked into have replaced perchloroethylene (氯乙烯),a carcinogenic (致癌的) air pollutant, still used by 70 percent of US dry cleaners, with alternatives, although these aren't great either.
Lastly,Cline fears that rental services will increase our appetite for fast fashion, simply because it?s so easily accessible. There?s something called "share-washing" that makes people waste more precisely because a product or service is shared and thus is regarded as more eco-friendly.Uber is one example of this, advertised as "a way to share rides and limit car ownership," and yet "it has been proven to discourage walking, bicycling, and public transportation use."
Renting clothes is still preferable to buying them cheap and throwing them in the dustbin after a few wears, but we shouldn't let the availability of these services make us too satisfied. There?s an even better step — that?s wearing what is already in the closet.
(1)What can we learn from Elizabeth Cline?s investigation?
A.Rental services are the main cause of share-washing.
B.Rental fashion is not so environmentally-friendly as it seems.
C.Pollution caused by dry-cleaning can be avoided if handled properly.
D.Items bought from stores give out more carbon than rental ones.
(2)With the figures in Paragraph 4,Cline intends to show that
A.clothing rental has become the new fashion
B.renting fashion actually sends out more carbon
C.producing the clothes has the largest carbon footprint
D.ordering a rented item online is the best for our environment
(3)What does the example of Uber in Paragraph 6 imply?
A.Rental services are on the rise.
B.Clothing rental will be as successful as Uber.
C.Renting clothes might waste more than expected.
D.Renting clothes might make people lose interest in fast fashion.
(4)The author suggests that we should
A.not rent any clothing
B.purchase inexpensive clothes
C.rent clothes rather than buy them
D.make full use of clothes we?ve had組卷:2引用:1難度:0.5 -
14.According to a recent study in the Journal of Consumer Research, both the size and consumption habits of our eating companions can influence our food intake. And contrary to existing research that says you should avoid eating with heavier people who order large portions(份 ),it's the beanpoles with big appetites you really need to avoid.
To test the effect of social influence on eating habits, the researchers conducted two experiments. In the first,95 undergraduate women were individually invited into a lab to ostensibly (表面上) participate in a study about movie viewership. Before the film began, each woman was asked to help herself to a snack. An actor hired by the researchers grabbed her food first. In her natural state, the actor weighed 105 pounds. But in half the cases she wore a specially designed fat suit which increased her weight to 180 pounds.
Both the fat and thin versions of the actor took a large amount of food. The participants followed suit, taking more food than they normally would have. However, they took significantly more when the actor was thin.
For the second test,in one case the thin actor took two pieces of candy from the snack bowls. In the other case, she took 30 pieces. The results were similar to the first test:the participants followed suit but took significantly more candy when the thin actor took 30 pieces.
The tests show that the social environment is extremely influential when we're making decisions. If this fellow participant is going to eat more,so will I.Call it the "I'll have what she's having effect. However,we'll adjust the influence. If an overweight person is having a large portion,I?ll hold back a bit because I see the results of his eating habits. But if a thin person eats a lot,I'll follow suit.If he can eat much and keep slim, why can't I?
(1)What is the recent study mainly about?
A.Food safety.
B.Eating behavior.
C.Consumer demand.
D.Movie viewership.
(2)What does the underlined word "beanpoles" in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Big eaters.
B.Tall thin persons.
C.Picky eaters.
D.Overweight persons.
(3)Why did the researchers hire the actor?
A.To see how she would affect the participants.
B.To test if the participants could recognize her.
C.To find out what she would do in the two tests.
D.To study why she could keep her weight down.
(4)On what basis do we "adjust the influence" according to the last paragraph?
A.How hungry we are.
B.How slim we want to be.
C.How we feel about the food.
D.How we perceive others.組卷:6引用:2難度:0.4
