          • 3.Huge beasts, one male and one female, protect the entrances to palaces, temples and other important buildings in China. These lion statues lie at the sides of the entrances to restaurants and shopping malls as well (the pair in the picture stand guard within the Forbidden City). They are also found in Chinese communities around the world. In Chinese culture, the lion is a symbol of strength and good luck and defends against something bad.
Whether made of stone or metal, these big and heavy statues are always used in pairs, one on each side of a door or gate.Looking out on the left (your right as you move towards the entrance) is the male lion, with his right front paw on a ball that stands for the world. On the other side, the female lion rests her left paw on a baby lion, standing for the raising of life. The two lions show us the Chinese idea of yin and yang:opposites that create one whole. In the mouths of some lion statues is a big pearl,a symbol of wisdom and power. These statues are designed so that the pearl can move around but not be removed.
Historians believe lions were brought to China during the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-220 A.D.),a time of increasing trade along the Silk Road. The lions were from Central Asia and were smaller than the more familiar African lion.Interestingly,in China, unlike in the West, these statues are never called "fu dogs".Here are some interpretations:some think the lions are like Chinese dogs, such as the shih tzu (獅子狗),chowchow and so on.Others say that "fu" sounds like the Chinese word for "success" and the word for "Buddha".
            (1)Paragraph 2 is mainly about
            .
A.what the lion statues are made of
B.what the lion statues stand for
C.how much people like the lion statues
D.where the lion statues come from
(2)The underlined words "interpretations" in Paragraph 3 mean
            .
            A.agreements.
            B.collections
            C.explanations
            D.translations

A.a person who likes animals very much
B.a businessman who runs shopping mall

          • 5.Can we "design" a baby the way we design a handbag? It may sound crazy, but the technology for a "designer baby" is actually possible. But this problem has also caused a lot of debates (爭論).
A "designer baby" refers to the research that allows scientists to make changes to unborn babies' DNA.The changes to the DNA and genes (基因)are made in the hopes that babies will less likely be born with certain serious illnesses. The idea that we could stop children from being born with such illnesses became very popular,so during the 21st century, research progressed very quickly.
However, people learned that it was not only illnesses that we could change, but also a baby's gender and physical appearance.A well-known case on the use of genetic engineering happened in 1996.An American couple,Monique and Scott Collins, decided to use a doctor's research to help them choose the gender of their next baby. They wanted to have a baby girl.Their story became famous and caused debates on how much doctors can do.For example, you could control babies' eye color, hair color and even things like height.
People think that it is not right to design our babies the way we would design a bag,but the research is also helpful in the medical field. One example of this is that Dr Adrian Thrasher of University College London was able to save a 1-year-old child from leukemia(白血病).

(1)The "designer baby technology" is about
            .
            A.designing a handbag for a baby
B.stopping the growth of unborn babies

D.changing the genes of an unborn baby
(2)The scientists' hope for a "designer baby" is to
            .
            A.change a baby's gender
            B.increase a baby's height
            C.stop some serious illnesses
D.make a smart boy with good looks
(3)The underlined word "gender" in paragraph 3 refers to
            .
            A.personality

            C.appearance
            D.behavior
(4)What do people think of the "designer baby technology"?

C.It has both good and bad sides.
D.It can be used for a second baby.

          三、任務型閱讀(本題有 5 小題,每小題 1 分,共計 5 分)下面文章中有 5 處需要添加小標題。請從以下選項(A---F)中選出符合各段意思的題。(選項中有一項是多余的)

          • 6.How to speak English well?
               (1)

The right attitude can make the difference between failure and success.Stop thinking of yourself as someone who is learning English, and start thinking of yourself as someone
who speaks English. It's a small change, but it will make you feel more confident and help you to use the English better.
               (2)

If someone asks you a question and you're not sure how to answer, start by thinking about the words used in the question. The person has already said most of the words you need to make your answer.
               (3)

When most students listen to a native English-speaker,they pay much attention to understanding what all the words mean. This is important, but there is a lot more you can learn from listening.Try listening not just to what the words mean, but to how the person says them. (4)

Speaking English fluently means being able to express your thoughts, feelings and ideas.
Your goal is to speak English in full sentences,so why not learn it in full sentences? You'll find that English is more useful in your everyday life if you study whole phrases, rather than just vocabulary and verbs.Start by thinking about phrases that you use frequently in your native language, and then learn how to say them in English.
               (5)

The key to learning a language is finding a balance between studying and practicing.
Speaking English fluently isn't the same as knowing perfect English grammar – even native English-speakers make grammar mistakes!Fluency is about being able to communicate. That's why sometimes it's important to put the grammar textbook away,so you can go out and practice those writing, reading, listening and speaking skills in the real world.

A.Remember the Answer Is in the Question
            B.Don't Study Grammar Too Much
            C.Use It or Lose It
            D.Stop Being a Student
            E.Learn and Study Phrases
