11.American children aren't the only couch potatoes out there.Nearly one third of children in the world spend three hours a day or more watching TV or playing computers, according to a study of over 70,000 teens in 34 nations.
From Argentina to Zambia,Regina Guthold of the World Health Organization in Geneva and her colleagues found that most children aren't getting enough exercise. "In terms of physical activity levels,we did not find much of a difference between poor and rich countries," Guthold told Reuters Health. "Growing up in a poor country does not necessarily mean that kids get more physical activity."
The study, published in The Journal of Pediatrics, looked at 72,845 schoolchildren aged 13 to 15 from Africa,North and South America,Asia,Europe, and the Middle East.
The researchers defined enough physical activity as at least an hour of exercise outside of gym class at least five days a week.Children who spent three or more hours a day watching TV,playing computer games,or chatting with friends—aside from time in school or time spent doing homework—were considered assedentary .The researchers found only one quarter of the boys and 15 percent of the girls were getting enough exercise bythese definitions .A quarter of the boys and nearly 30 percent of the girls sat too much and didn't get enough exercise.
Children in Myanmar were the least sedentary, with 13 percent of boys and 8 percent of girls classified as sedentary.
Girls were less active than boys in every country except for Zambia.Uruguay had the highest percentage of active boys,at 42 percent, while Zambia had the lowest,at 8 percent.Girls from India were the most active, with 37 percent meeting exercise definitions, while girls from Egypt were the least active, with just 4 percent getting enough exercise.
While the study didn't look at the reasons behind the lack of physical activity in various nations,Guthold guessed that urbanization (城市化) could be a factor as well as being able to use cars and TVs.She said schools can help children become more active by having physical education classes and educating students about the importance of exercise.
(1)What does the underlined word "sedentary" in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Addicted.
B.Flexible.
C.Inactive.
D.Unhealthy.
(2)What can we know from the study?
A.Boys from Uruguay were the most active.
B.Most girls from India got enough exercise.
C.Children in Europe get more physical activity.
D.Boys are more active than girls in every country.
(3)How does the writer present the findings of the study?
A.By using quotations and taking examples.
B.By listing figures and making comparisons.
C.By asking questions and providing answers.
D.By presenting facts and drawing conclusions.
(4)Which of the following factors probably lead to children's lack of physical activity?
A.Computers and potatoes.
B.Computers and urbanization.
C.Urbanization and physical education.
D.Physical education and homework.組卷:16引用:4難度:0.5 -
12.It was decades ago,but it's still one of the most memorable conversations of my life.On a long, slow train rattling north, with nothing to do but watch the rain, the guy sitting opposite began trying to talk to me.Like most young women who have learned the hard way to be cautious of strangers,I reacted coldly. But curiosity took over when he said that he was just bored, and liked talking.
So that's what we did,for hours and hours, since he turned out to be very talkative. When the train eventually pulled in,we didn't swap numbers-it was a conversation strictly of its time-but I still think about it occasionally on long, boring journeys, before getting a phone out and scrolling silently like everyone else.Rarely can a person cheerfully break the social taboo about talking to strangers without any trace of ill intention but life would be more interesting if more of us knew how to do it.
And that's why I feel it ridiculous about a campaign launched this week to heal bitter national divides by encouraging Britons to talk to each other.Obviously,it takes more than a small talk over garden fences to unite a divided nation now.More people live alone than they did a generation ago,and we socialize increasingly through screens instead of bothering to call. In reality, social media platforms designed to bring people together have unknowingly fueled the division.
It is true that the "tube chat" campaign of a few years back failed in its attempt to make Londoners talk to each other on public transport. But even city residents who would normally die rather than make eye contact with strangers still happily join the large crowds of people by the Thames for the New Year's Eve fireworks. They would get a far better view at home on TV-it's not really about the fireworks, but being part of social engagement.
There's no guarantee that this latest attempt to reconnect will succeed, but I hope that my temporary train friend then is still talking, wherever he is now.
(1)What led the author to talk with the guy on the train?
A.Her growing interest in communication.
B.Her curiosity about the man's identity.
C.Her habit of chatting with strangers.
D.Her boredom about the train journey.
(2)According to the writer, what has made talking to strangers a social taboo among the Britons?
A.A lack of basic communicating skills.
B.The absence of common topics.
C.The concern for personal safety.
D.The addiction to their smart phones.
(3)What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 indicate about social media platform?
A.It brings people together in a larger sense.
B.It positively helps break the national boundaries.
C.It has made people more divided than connected.
D.It is the key driving force of removing divisions.
(4)What can we infer from Londoners participation in the New Year's Eve firework show?
A.The Tube chat campaign is less appealing.
B.People prefer to watch fireworks on the scene.
C.The charm of the fireworks is hard to resist.
D.People's desire to connect is still alive.組卷:8引用:1難度:0.5 -
13.The forest of today will not be the forests of tomorrow.Rising temperatures, trees being cut down, development and climate-change-caused disasters are changing the very makeup of the Earth's forests, new research published in Science finds.
Older, bigger trees are being lost at an alarming rate, making the planet's forests shorter and younger. The change is being driven at different rates by different causes in different places, the study's authors say,but the consequences will be global.
Old growth forests absorb and store massive amounts of climate-warming CO2.They provide habitats for rare and endangered species and promote rich biodiversity.Researchers found that the world lost roughly one-third of its old growth forests between 1900 and 2015.In North America and Europe, they found that tree mortality(死亡率) has doubled in the past 40 years.
"Warming temperatures, wildfires, logging and insect outbreaks were among the many causes of the decline," says Nate McDowell, the study's lead author. "What's perhaps more concerning is that the trajectory(發展軌跡) of all these disturbances is generally increasing over time and is expected to continue increasing in the future." he says.
McDowell's focus is on how trees are affected by rising temperatures, arguably the biggest driver of forest change. To get a broader understanding of how forests are changing globally,he brought in more than 20 other researchers in different fields.Together, they examined more than 160 previous studies about tree mortality and its global causes, applying current satellite data and modeling to create a look at the Earth's changing forests to date.
"It's not a shock, but it's very sad," says Kristina,an ecologist and leader of the ForestGEO Ecosystems &Climate Program who helped with the research. "We as a human society are hitting these forests so rapidly with so many different changes that they can't keep up." she says.
(1)What can we know from the figures in the paragraph 3?
A.More trees should be planted in no time.
B.We are losing old growth forests quickly.
C.Forests are important habitats for wildlife.
D.Different trees can absorb CO2 differently.
(2)What can we say about McDowell's research?
A.Timely and long-standing.
B.All-sided and careful.
C.Time-limited and regional.
D.Traditional and extensive.
(3)What's Kristina's attitude towards the findings of the research?
A.Worried.
B.Optimistic.
C.Supportive.
D.Indifferent.
(4)What's the writer's purpose of writing the passage?
A.To call on people to plant more trees.
B.To discuss the influence of climate change.
C.To warn against the loss of old growth forests.
D.To compare forests of today with those of the future.組卷:0引用:1難度:0.6 -

Oh,Brother! A few months ago,my mom got remarried,making Drew my stepbrother.She hoped we'd get along.But he was like a headache I couldn't get rid of.Mom thought inviting Kendall,my best friend,for a sleepover would take my mind off Drew.So far,that wasn't working.
Later in my room,Kendall and I were doing our nails when Drew came in,with a bowl of popcorn in his hands."Does anyone want popcorn?"asked Drew.
"Mom doesn't like food in here, and you got into my room without asking!"I said angrily."Time to leave,Drew."I pointed to the door.
I decided an ice cream would cool me down.In the kitchen,Kendall and I had hardly started eating when I heard Drew hurrying down the stairs. "Hey,who wants to have a pillow fight?"he asked.
"I do!" cried Kendall, sticking her ice cream in the freezer. She and Drew ran upstairs, leaving me alone with my bad attitude.
I wasn't about to follow them like a puppy. There was something I had to do.I took the cream and slipped into Drew's room.I found his slippers, and stuck the cream inside them.Satisfied,I grabbed a pillow, ready to fight him.
I ran into my room and hit Drew with the pillow. He countered with a blow to my legs.Kendall threw her pillow into his side. Before long,we were all laughing.I lifted my pillow over my head to give Drew a final blow. But I missed. It crashed into the popcorn bowl left on the dresser. The corn s rained everywhere just as mom walked into the room."Stop! You kids are being too wild."she cried."And,Sarah, you know I don't like food in here."
