And 50-year-old Indian Lakyntiew Syiemlieh stands an evidence for this saying. She recently cleared her Class 12 board exams.Lakyntiew, who has four children and two grandchildren, decided to go after her higher secondary education over three decades after dropping out of school.Earlier this year, she was one of the 24,267 students who appeared for the state board's Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate(HSSLC)exam.Lakyntiew took part in the exams for the arts stream and had chosen subjects like Khasi,English,Political Science,Economics, and Education as her areas of specialization.
On July 13,2020,when the results were announced, she was excited. "Though I only got the third division,my children were still so excited that they started shouting, hugging, and kissing me when the results were declared," said Lakyntiew.
In fact, the grandmother of two has expressed her interest in pursuing higher studies in the field of local language.Lakyntiew took up a distance education course offered by a university in 2015.She stopped going to school because mathematics was too difficult for her to understand. She was offered a job to teach in a preschool in 2008,and that was the beginning of her love for re-learning.
Being the oldest student in the class, most of Lakyntiew's classmates called her as "Mei",which means "mother" in the local language.Besides concentrating on academics, she also participated in after-class activities like field trips, dance competitions, and singing challenges, among others.

          • 3."What kind of rubbish are you?"This question might normally cause anger, but in Shanghai it has brought about weary complaints over the past few mjye.aiths.On July 1st,the city introduced strict rubbish-sorting regulations that are expected to be used as a model for our country.Citizens must divide their waste into four separate categories and put it into specific public bins. They must do so at scheduled times, when monitors are present to ensure that rules are obeyed and to examine the nature of one's rubbish.
Violators could be hit with fines of up to 200 yuan ($29).For repeat violators, the city can add black marks to their credit records, making it harder for them to obtain hank loans or even buy train tickets.
Shanghai authorities are responding to obvious environmental problem. It produces 9 million tons of garbage a year. But like other cities in China,it lacks a recycling system.Instead,it has relied on rubbish pickers to pick out whatever can be reused. This has limits. As people get wealthier, fewer of them want to do such dirty work. The waste, meanwhile, just keeps piling up.China produces 80 billion pairs of one-off chopsticks a year.
Many citizens appear to support the idea of recycling in general but are frustrated by the details.Rubbish must be divided according to whether it is food, recyclable, dry or hazardous(有害的),the distinctions among which can be confusing, though there are apps to help work it out. Some have complained about the rules surrounding food waste. They must put it straight in the required public bin, forcing them to tear open plastic bags and toss(投擲)it by hand,Most annoying are the short periods for throwing trash, typically a couple of hours, morning and evening.Along with the monitors at the bins, this means that people go at around the same time and can keep an eye on what is being thrown out;no one wants to look bad.

(1)What's the purpose of Paragraph 1?

            A.To complain about rubbish dividing.
B.To explain the four categories of the waste.
C.To introduce the rules on waste sorting.
D.To show the goal of rubbish, sorting regulations.
(2)What does the underlined word "Violators" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A.People who don't pay for train tickets.
B.People who argue with the monitors.
            C.People who obtain bank loans.
D.People who are against the regulations.
(3)What makes the citizens upset most about the rules?

A.Complex distinction among the four categories of rubbish.
B.Short scheduled time for tossing rubbish.
C.Being observed by monitors when throwing the garbage.
D.Being fined when blamed due to improper behavior.
(4)What can be the best title for the text?

            A.A Restart of Waste-sorting
B.A New Age of Garbage Classification
            C.Learning to Classify Rubbish
            D.Rubbish-sorting Benefits the World

          • 4.The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora, which is 161km west of Cusco,it's an 18km walk to Capuliyoc Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina, where travellers camp for the night.Waking early, travellers then have to cross the Apurímac River and walk uphill to camp close to the ruins. Then, the next morning,it's another 2km walk up to the ruins,3,100 m above sea level. To get back?Well,it's the same way you came.
"I've had people in their 60s and 70s do it," said Juan Barrios,a guide from the Adventure Life company. "But some people come out thinking that because it's only 28km from the drop off they can do it in a day.Six or seven days for the hike is best."
It makes sense, then, that Choquequirao draws only about 30 people a day during the high season(June through August).Compare that to the 2,500 people who arrive each day at the famous Incan city of Machu Picchu.
But for those who make the journey, the rewards(回報)are great:beautiful mountain views at every turn, and the chance to explore the wonderful ruins nearly alone.
Believed to be created around the same time as Machu Picchu,in 1445,Choquequirao is actually larger than better-known Machu Picchu. But very little has been written about Peru's other lost city and researchers are still uncovering new parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively untouched.
But officials say that the building of the first cable car(纜車)to Choquequirao will shorten the several-day walk to a 15-minute cable car ride.As a result, the number of travellers that now make the journey each week could turn into 3,000 visitors per day.
Choquequirao is beautiful now because of how untouched it is.Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Díaz in 1710,the ruins still make you feel as though you're the first to find them. Will it be the same when more travellers flood in (大量涌入)?

(1)What does the first paragraph centre on?

            A.How tall Choquequirao is.
B.How to get to Choquequirao easily.
            C.What great views Choquequirao has.
D.How hard the trip to Choquequirao is.
(2)In what way is Choquequirao different from Machu Picchu?

            A.Choquequirao is older.
            B.Choquequirao is quieter.
            C.Choquequirao is smaller.
            D.Choquequirao is better known.
(3)How are the ruins of Choquequirao?

            A.They're still being dug out.
B.They're in a generally poor condition.
C.They're being renewed at the moment.
            D.They've been researched internationally.
(4)What does the author think of Choquequirao in the future?

            A.It will be more attractive.
B.It will develop at a slow speed.
C.It won't necessarily take a turn for the better.
D.It won't be more popular than Machu Picchu.

          • 5.Everybody yawns(打哈欠)- from unborn babies to great-grandparents.But why,exactly,do we yawn?(1)
            .
One theory(理論)is that when we are bored or tired,we just don't breathe as deeply as we usually do. (2)
.Therefore, yawning helps us bring more oxygen into the blood and move more carbon dioxide out of the blood.
Yawning, then, would be an action that we can't really control to help us control our oxygen and carbon dioxide levels.Sounds good, but other studies have shown that breathing more oxygen does not make us yawn less.(3)
            .Hmmm.Now what?
               (4)
.Stretching (拉伸) and yawning may be a way to relax muscles and joints, increase heart rate, and feel more awake.
Other people believe that yawning is a protective way to redistribute(重新分配) the oil-like substance called surfactant that helps keep lungs from drying up.So,if we didn't yawn, according to this theory, taking a deep breath would become harder and harder - and that would not be good!
But there is one idea about yawning that everyone knows to be true:(5)
.If you yawn in class, you'll probably notice a few other people will start yawning, too.Even thinking about yawning can get you yawning. How many times have you yawned while reading this article? We hope not many!

            A.It seems to spread
            B.Yawning seems to be common
C.No one knows for sure, but there are many theories
D.Another theory is that yawning stretches the lung and lung tissue
E.This theory indicates yawning, like a deep breath, helps us feel fresh
F.Likewise, breathing more carbon dioxide does not increase yawning
G.As this theory goes, our bodies take in less oxygen because our breathing has slowed
