          • 11.Italy and China are two nations with a long, venerable(令人尊重的),and complex history. These two countries came into contact with each other in ancient times, such as Marco Polo and Matteo Ricci, respectively an explorer and a missionary.
The two countries celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2020.On this occasion, they decided to set up the "Italy-China Year of Culture and Tourism",a year full of events and activities aimed at boosting cooperation, traveling, and people-to-people exchange.
The opening event was held in January 2020.Due to the pandemic outbreak and the consequent travel bans, tourism and cultural exchanges were brought to a standstill and the events designed to promote exchange and tourism did not take place. However, these events have been rescheduled and will be held in 2022.The year of tourism and culture "remains a demonstration of the common intention to maintain an important people-to-people exchange between two of the world's most important civilizations".
In terms of tourism, the two countries show positive bilateral(雙邊的)trends. There are several examples of twin towns between Italy and China. The three oldest pairs are Milan-Shanghai(established in 1979),Florence-Nanjing(1980),and Venice-Suzhou(1980).Normally the pairings are made according to the existing similarities between the cities.Milan and Shanghai are respectively Italy's and China's fashion capitals and economic hubs(樞紐).Florence and Nanjing were both capitals in ancient times and are filled with scenic spots and ancient buildings. Finally,Suzhou's ancient part is characterized by canals, bridges, and narrow streets that remind of Venice's structure,to such an extent that this East-China metropolis was nicknamed "The Venice of the East".This kind of relation between cities is important to encourage cooperation in various sectors(education, tourism, culture, etc.) and to promote people-to-people exchange.
The touristic sector is an important one to cherish:It not only gives work to many people, but also plays a role in raising mutual understanding and familiarity between different countries. As stressed by an author, "The more Chinese tourists come to Italy and the more Italians travel to China, the closer the two countries become on a human level. "

(1)What is the common aim of the Italy-China Year of Culture and Tourism in 2022?

A.To deal with the pandemic hand in hand.
B.To boost cooperation between the two countries.
C.To promote traveling between the two countries.
D.To promote people-to-people exchange between the two countries.
(2)Why didn't the events designed to promote exchange and tourism take place in 2020?

            A.Because the pandemic broke out.
B.Because the events have been rescheduled.
C.Because cultural exchanges were brought to a standstill.
D.Because the two countries have shown positive bilateral trends about the tourism.
(3)Why are Suzhou and Venice considered as twin towns?

A.Because the two cities are economic hubs.
B.Because the two cities are filled with scenic spots.
C.Because the two cities are filled with ancient buildings.
D.Because Suzhou's ancient part reminds of Venice's structure.
(4)What can we infer from the author in the last paragraph?

A.Italy and China show positive bilateral trends.
B.Italy and China are two nations with a long and complex history.
C.Tourism and cultural exchanges between Italy and China were brought to a standstill.

          • 12.As William Shakespeare is to literature in English,so is the poet Du Fu to the Chinese literary tradition. "We have Dante.Shakespeare and Du Fu.These poets create the very values by which poetry is judged." remarked Harvard Professor Stephen Owen in Du Fu,China's Greatest Poet,a new BBC documentary(紀錄片)that aired on April 7.
Aimed at introducing the charm and beauty of traditional Chinese literature to viewers around the globe, the documentary invited famous British actor Ian McKellen, who played the wizard Gandalf in the film series The Lord of the Rings,to read 15 of Du's poems that have been translated into English.
The one-hour film traces the poet's life experiences in detail.Born in 712,Du lived under the reign(統治)of the Tang Emperor Xuanzong(713?756),a time marked by extraordinary prosperity(繁榮),inclusiveness and cultural accomplishment.
However,as the An Lushan Rebellion(叛亂)floored the empire, the 43-year-old Du,the former civil servant at the Tang court, had to take his family out of his hometown, and faced starvation and sufferings.Through ups and clowns, the poet never stopped writing and about 1,500 poems have been kept over the ages.
Even though he never held a high position in the government,Du still cared about common people. For example,in the poem Cottage Unroofed by Autumn Gales,he wrote that "Could I get mansions covering ten thousand miles?I'd house all scholars poor and make them beam with smiles".
"That is why he was honored as a Poet Sage by later generations.A difficult life and his spirit of concern about the world helped him create so many masterpieces," Shi Wenxue,a cultural critic based in Beijing.jye.ai the Times.
Without doubt,Du is a cultural symbol of ancient China, but his brilliant works and core spirits have also inspired people outside of China. As the documentary noted, his work represents a precious cultural heritage for the entire world, not just China.

          • 13.Giving children music lessons won't just introduce them to music- it could also greatly improve their language skills but it isn't understood if this is a side effect of a general improvement of cognitive(認知的) skills,or something that directly affects language processing.
Now,we are getting closer to an answer, thanks to a study of 74 Chinese kindergarten children, led by Robert Desimone from MIT.For the study,Desimone's team chose children from the Chinese education system, with the support of education officials who wanted to see how it might improve their learning.
The 4 to 5 year-old Mandarin-speaking children in the study were divided into three groups. The first group received a 45-minute piano lesson three times a week, while the second group received extra reading instruction classes. The third group acted as controls, taking no extra lessons beyond their usual classes.
The classes lasted for six months, after which the children were tested on their ability to tell words based on differences in tones, consonants(輔音),or vowels(元音).The test results showed that the children who had taken piano lessons performed better at telling the difference between words that differ by a single consonant, when compared with the children who took extra reading lessons.Compared to the control group, both the music learners and the extra reading group did better in telling the difference between words based on vowel differences.
"It looks like for recognising differences between sounds ,including speech sounds,it's better than extra reading. That means schools could pay more attention to music," Desimone says. "It's not worse than giving extra reading to the children, which is probably what many schools are trying to do--get rid of the art education and just have more reading.

(1)What does the underlined word "this" in paragraph 1 refer to?

            A.Introducing music to children.
            B.Determining language ability.
            C.Giving children music lesson.
            D.Improving children's language skills.
(2)What do we know about the study?

A.It lasted for about half a year.
            B.The control group learned nothing.
C.Music and reading can both improve learning.
D.The second group did well in telling consonants.
(3)How did the researchers get the results?

            A.By giving examples.
            B.By making comparisons.
            C.By asking questions.
            D.By making classifications.
(4)What can we infer from the last paragraph?

            A.Students like extra reading.
            B.Many schools value art education.
C.The benefits of music lessons are not fully understood.
D.Music lessons are enough to improve students' learning.

The series of photographs is created by light painting in which the photographer uses light sources to produce different images which are captured by a camera,as if drawing on the photos.Roy Wang, the representative figure of light-painting photography in China, says, "What attracts me most about light painting is that,by using a simple light and against a dark background,I can paint in a free style."
Wang was a professional athlete. However, his sports career ended in 2012 because of injuries. His travels led to his interest in photography.Once he saw light-painting photos by Spanish master Pablo Picasso online and was introduced to the technique. He began to try in this field.
In 2013,he started adding the dragon and other creatures from ancient texts to light painting.Wang's work is inspired by mythical creatures that add a sense of mystery to his photography but at the same time it proves to be difficult to create such images with light."The mythical creatures are as mysterious as light painting. They both emerge in the darkness, and without an exact shape or form, they are free,I let loose my imagination, based on the descriptions in ancient books," said Wang.
To Roy Wang, the technique has a wide application in expressing different ideas.Apart from mythical creatures,he has been showing themes relevant to more recent events, such as a series in praise of medical workers during the outbreak of COVID-19.
Tradition will continue to be a creative force for Wang as he wants to add more Chinese elements in his works, including his next series, creating photos that have both aesthetic(美 學的)and cultural values.

            D.Photos by Pablo Picasso.
(3)What problem does Wang have in photographing mythical creatures?

C.His technique is not suitable for the creatures.
D.He has little knowledge of ancient books.

A.They will mainly praise medical workers.

Once upon a time, two brothers who lived on neighbouring farms fell into conflict. It was the first serious disagreement in forty years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labour and goods as needed without a hitch. Then the long cooperation fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and then grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.
One morning, there was a knock on John's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter's toolbox. " I'm looking for a few days work, "he said. "Perhaps you have a few jobs here and there. Could I help you? ""Yes, " said John. " I do have a job for you. Look across the small creek at that farm. That's my neighbor. In fact, it's my younger brother. Last week there was a meadow between us and he took his bulldozer (推土機) there and now there is a creek between us. Well, he may have done this to annoy me but I'll do better. See that pile of wood by the barn (谷倉)? I want you to build a fence an 8-foot-high fence--so I won't need to see his place anymore."
The carpenter said, "I think I understand the situation Show me the nails and hole-digger and I'll be able to do a job that pleases you. The older brother had to go to the town for supplies, so he helped the carpenter get everything ready and then he left
The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing and nailing. At sunset when John returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. John's eyes opened wide, his jaw dropped.
