11.The elusive profound mystery of happiness could be as simple as remembering the good times and forgetting the regrets,a new university study reported yesterday. For people who look at the past through rose-tinted glasses are happier than those who focus on negative past experience and regrets, according to a new study published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences.
The study is conducive to the explanation of why personality has such a strong influence on a person's happiness. The findings suggest that people with certain personality traits are happier than others because of the way they think about their past, present and future. The study examined how people's ratings on the "Big Five" personality traits relate to their approach to time and life satisfaction.
The "Big Five" model assesses how extroverted, open, responsible, agreeable, and neurotic a person is,and rates individuals as high or low on each personality trait rather than assigning them a personality type. "We found that the first four kind of people are happier with their lives because they tend to hold a bright view of the past and are less likely to have negative thoughts and regrets.People high on the neurotic scale essentially have the exact opposite view of the past and are less happier as a result," said Ryan Howell, assistant professor of psychology at San Francisco State University, who authored the study with SF State College senior Jiawei Zhang. "This is good news because though it may be difficult to change your personality, you may be able to change your view of time and boost your happiness," Howell said.
The authors suggest that enjoying happy memories or reframing painful past experience in a positive light could be effective ways for individuals to increase their life satisfaction.
"Personality traits influence how people look at the past, present and future and it is these different perspectives on time that drive a person's happiness," Howell added.

12.Look at the map of Spain and point at the center. You've located the country's capital and one of Europe's most beautiful cities:Madrid. This popular destination is considered a city of contrasts with its abundant historic sites, resting in the shadows of modern skyscrapers.
History
This city of over 3 million people is proud of Western Europe's largest royal palace, and some consider it to be Madrid's most beautiful building.
Inside the Royal Palace 2,800 rooms are decorated in glory with museum-quality furniture and artworks.Tourists can tour 50 of these large and splendid rooms.
Art
The Internationally respected Prado Museum is the largest and most impressive art gallery in Spain.Opened in 1819,it is filled with works of art that feature the world's most comprehensive collection of Spanish paintings.
Shopping
Madrid has some of Europe's best shopping, and potential buyers love to look through the stores looking for bargains. But for 500 years, shoppers have gathered to an extremely large outdoor flea market known as the Rastro where they find everything from antiques(古董)to CDs.
Entertainment
No trip to Madrid is complete without seeing a performance of Spain's famous art form, flamenco.Every day, flamenco performers sing, dance or play the guitar in small cafes and grand theaters alike.
Food
Madrid has a wide variety of restaurants, but because the Spanish typically eat late at about 9 or 10 p.m.,it's difficult to find good dinner food earlier. If you get hungry before then, the best solution is to try a tapas bar where light snacks are served.Be sure to try the jamon,a kind of dry-cured ham:Spain is famous for it.

13.It's an attractive idea:by playing online problem-solving,matching and other games for a few minutes a day, people can improve such mental abilities as reasoning, verbal (語言的) skills and memory. But whether these games deliver on those promises is up for debate.
This year,in perhaps the biggest real-world test of these programs, neuroscientists (神 經(jīng)學(xué)家) at Canada's Western University gathered 8,563 volunteers globally through Cambridge Brain Sciences,a Toronto-based company that provides assessments to measure healthy brain function.Participants filled out anonline question form about their training habits, opinions about training benefits and which,if any, program they used. Some 1,009 participants reported using brain training programs for about eight months, onaverage, though the length of time ranged from two weeks to more than five years.
Next, the volunteers completed 12 mental tests about memory, reasoning and verbal skills. When researchers looked at the results, they saw that brain trainees on average had no mental edge over the other group in memory, verbal skills and reasoning.Even among those who had used training programs for at least 18 months, brain training didn't boost thinking abilities above the level of people who didn't use the programs.
"No matter how we dealt with the data,we were unable to find any evidence that brain training was associated with mental abilities," says a researcher. That held true whether the team analyzed participants by age, program used, education or economic situation - all were similar to the group who didn't use the programs. However, brain training may be beneficial when it is connected with real problems in life, researcherssay. The real world may be the best brain trainer. They suggest that we practice those skills in different real-life situations. "That's a much better use of one's time than sitting at a computer and doing little tasks."
(1)How were the 1,009 test participants different from the others?
A.They completed more mental tests.
B.They showed better mental abilities.
C.They filled an online question form.
D.They had brain training experiences.
(2)Which of the following best replaces the underlined word "edge" in paragraph 3?
A.Advantage.
B.Power.
C.Illness.
D.Control.
(3)What do the researchers suggest about brain training?
A.It should provide scientific data.
B.It should promote online programs.
C.It should settle problems in life.
D.It should benefit more researchers.
(4)Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A.Debate Raised after Research?
B.Online Games Boost Brainpower?
C.Biggest Real-world Test Ever?
D.New Method for Brain Training?組卷:9引用:6難度:0.3 -
14. Recently, four professors of neuroscience were awarded the Brain Prize for their life changing contributions to the research on migraines(偏頭痛),a disease previously not understood well.
Professor Michael Moskowitz from Harvard Medical School,Peter Goadsby from King's College London,Lars Edvinsson from Lund University in Sweden, and Jes Olesen from Rigshospitalet,Denmark, were celebrated as the recipients of the Brain Prize, the world's most distinguished award highlighting achievements in brain research. The Crown Prince of Denmark presented the four professors with a grand prize of roughly 1.5 million dollars on October 25 in Copenhagen,Denmark.
Migraines remain one of the most serious and common neurological illnesses millions around the world suffer.Studies show that women are three times more likely to experience frequent and intense migraines than men,and symptoms can last up to 24 hours.Typically, these intense head-throbbing pains are also accompanied by vomiting(嘔吐),dizziness and sensitivity to sound, light, and touch.
After over forty years of research, the four professors pinpointed the major cause — chemicals released within the brain.Previously, the main causes of migraines were thought to be stress, pressure or anxiety. In 1979,Professor Michael Moskowitz discovered that headaches occur when thin nerves are found in our head and face to interact with a highly-sensitive membrane(膜) surrounding our brain, releasing chemicals called neuropeptides. These chemicals can then cause the blood vessels in our head to expand and also send pain signals to the brain.Later, research by Professor Goadsby and Edvinsson revealed that the specific neuropeptide which plays the central role in causing the intense headache is calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP).Then,Professor Olesen's work further confirmed that CGRP is indeed responsible for the pain, rather than a chemical produced in the brain as a result of the migraines.
The work by these scientists paves the way for developing more effective medicine. While past treatments can only temporarily stop the pain, scientists say that the newly developed drugs not only prevent migraines but also don't cause the harmful side effects patients had to endure.
