3.There is an old joke among pilots that says the ideal flight crew is a computer,a pilot and a dog.The computer's job is to fly the plane. The pilot is there to feed the dog.And the dog's job is to bite the pilot if he tries to touch the computer.
Handing complex tasks to computers is not new.But recent progress in machine learning,a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI),has enabled computers to handle many problems which were previously beyond jye.aim.The result has been an AI boom, with computers moving into everything from medical diagnosis and insurance to self-driving cars.
There is a problem, though.Machine learning works by giving computers the ability to train themselves, which adapts their programming to the task at hand.People struggle to understand exactly how those self-written programs do what they do.When algorithms(計算機程序)are doing small tasks, such as playing chess or recommending a film to watch, this "black box" problem can be safely ignored. When they are deciding who gets a loan,or how to drive a car through a crowded city,it is potentially harmful. And when things go wrong, then customers, regulators and the courts will want to know why.
For some people this is a reason to hold back AL France's digital-economy minister,Mounir Mahjoubi, has said that the government should not use any algorithm whose decisions cannot be explained. But that is an overreaction. The difficulties caused by clever computers are not unheard- of.Society already has plenty of experience dealing with problematic black boxes;the most common are called human beings, who can't even figure out what's going on in a brajye.ai.In response to the weakness in humans, society has evolved a series of workable coping mechanisms, called laws, rules and regulations. Many of these can be applied to machines as well.
Humans have worked with computers on complex tasks for decades. One lesson from such applications is that, wherever possible, people should supervise(監督)the machjye.aies.In that joke, pilots are vital in case something happens that is beyond the scope of artificial intelligence. As computers spread, companies and governments should ensure the first line of defence is a real person who can overrule the algorithms if necessary.
(1)Why is the joke mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To make people laugh.
B.To foresee future aeroplane industry.
C.To introduce the latest model of aeroplanes.
D.To raise people's awareness of computers performing complex tasks.
(2)What has caused the increasing application of computers in various fields?
A.The shortage of labor force.
B.The rise of artificial intelligence.
C.The encouragement of government.
D.The development of medical economy.
(3)Why are some people opposed to AI?
A.Black boxes always go wrong.
B.Laws forbid machine learning.
C.They don't understand how AI works.
D.Computers are trying to replace human beings.組卷:9引用:1難度:0.6 -
4.My friend Dominic recently set himself a 21-day kindness challenge. He started Mother's Day - May 10 - by surprising his mother at her work with his two brothers.
The week before his challenge started,he had won some money,so on Day Two he donated some of his winnings to a local disability organization in Horsham,Victoria. On Day Three he left money in an envelope at the laundromat (自助洗衣店) with the words "The next one is on me".Later that day,the local district was hit by strong winds so he cleaned out his elderly neighbor's gutters (排水溝) on Day Four.
Dom manages a retirement village and on Day Five he visited some former residents who had moved to a nursing home.Trading in his car keys for a bicycle helmet on Day Six was Dom's way of being kind to the environment, and then on Day Seven he took his grandmother on a road trip to three different towns so she could visit the graves of loved ones she hadn't visited.
On Day Eight he spent the morning down at the nearby Wimmera River where he picked up rubbish that was littering the shore. He drove 200km to the closest blood bank in Ballarat to make his first blood donation on Day Nine and then on Day Ten bought a lottery ticket, and put it in an envelope before dropping it into the letterbox of a random house.
On Day Eleven my daughter and I found ourselves stuck in a supermarket car park with a flat battery.I called Dom,who came to our rescue with smile, and successfully jump-started the car so we could get home.
Day Twelve's act of kindness was volunteering at Meals on Wheels to help deliver dinners to people in the community who need extra support.
And so Dom's kindness continued for another nine days - helping friends move house, delivering flowers to nurses at the local hospital, washing his aunt's car and stopping by his grandparents to help out in their garden are just some of the kind things he did.

8.The word " motivation" comes from the Latin term motivus, "a moving cause".It is described as the force that drives us to pursue a goal, including the desire to continue pursuing meaning, purpose, and a life worth living. It fuels competition and boosts social connection. Its absence can lead to mental illnesses such as depression.
People often have multiple motives for engaging in any one behaviour.Motivation might be extrinsic. That means a person is inspired by outside forces—other people or rewards.Anything promised for completing the task or received as a result of completing the task are extrinsic motivators.Extrinsic motivation can increase motivation in the short term, but over time it may gradually decrease.
Motivation can also be intrinsic.Intrinsic motivation comes purely from within, with no expected reward, deadline,or outside pressure. For example, people who are intrinsically motivated to run do so because they love the feeling of running itself.Compared to extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation tends to push people more forcefully, and the achievements are more satisfying, since it is integrated into identity and serves as a continuous source of motivation. To understand motivation,Abraham Maslow introduced the concept of hierarchy of needs (需求層次) in 1943.According to Maslow, humans are intrinsically motivated to meet physical needs, the most fundamental ones such as needs for food. Then they gradually satisfy several levels of needs from safety,to higher-order needs for love, belonging, and self-respect,and finally move toward expressing their full potential—self-actualization,the desire to become the most that one can be.Although the generality of Maslow's theory has been challenged, many believe it reveals fundamental truths about human motivation. No matter where motivation begins, there are always ways to increase it—whether that be your own motivation or someone else's.Sometimes you might feel completely unmotivated—and that's OK.In that situation, allow yourself to feel the discomfort, hear the negative self-talk,and then take action anyway.
(1)What is motivation?
(2)Why is intrinsic motivation more powerful?
(3)Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
According to Maslow,we are motivated by different levels of needs ,starting at the lowest and the most basic level known as self-actualization needs.
(4)In what way(s) do you think you can get motivated?(In about 40 words)組卷:3引用:1難度:0.5
