          • 16.The arts, especially music, should be part of every school's lessons at every grade level.Students would be much smarter if they had some musical experience. They could improve their classroom skills, like paying attention and following directions.People develop all these skills when they learn music.Making music also lets children use their imagination. It provides students with a chance to try out their own ideas.
Music not only makes children better students, but also gives them something positive to do.In a music programme, children can be part of a band instead of joining a gang (團伙).Parents can enjoy listening to their children's music instead of seeing them glued to a computer or TV screen. In a school band, students get to be part of a team. They can get along well with old friends and make new friends through music.
Music builds self-confidence,too.It gives children a sense of achievement and success.Making music is something for them to be proud of,and it lets kids practise performing in front of audience.Music gives children an opportunity for self-expression,and that helps develop their self-confidence.
Once again, music is important because it can make children better students, give them something positive to do,and build their character. That is why music should be offered in every single grade in every school.

(1)According to the passage, music could make students smarter by
            .

          • 17.Traveling without a map in different countries,I find out about different ways of directions every time I ask "How can I get to the post office?"
Foreign tourists are often puzzled in Japan because most streets there don't have name signs. In Japan, people use landmarks(地標)in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, "Go straight down to the corner.Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop."
People in Los Angeles, the US,have no idea of distance on the map:they measure distance by time, not miles. "How far away is the post office?" you ask. "Oh," they answer, "it's about five minutes from here." You don't understand completely,"Yes,but how many miles away is it,please?" To this question you won't get an answer, because most probably they don't know it themselves.
People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because tourists seldom understand the Greek language.Instead,a Greek will often say, "Follow me." Then he'll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.
Sometimes a person doesn't know the answer to your question. What happens in the situation?A New Yorker might say, "Sorry,I have no idea." But in Yucatan,Mexico,no one answers "I don't know." People there believe that "I don't" is impolite. They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one.So a tourist can get lost very easily in Yucatan! However, one thing will help you everywhere in the world. It's body language.

(1)Which of the following is probably an example of Japanese directions?

A."The post office is at Street Kamira."
B."Turn right at the hospital and go past a school."
C."The post office is about five minutes from here."
D."Go south two miles.Turn west and then go another mile."
(2)Why don't people in Los Angeles give directions in miles?

A.They prefer to lead you the way.
B.They prefer to use body language.
C.They often have no idea of distance measured by miles.
D.They use landmarks in their directions instead of distance.
            (3)How do Greeks give directions?

            A.Using street names.
            B.Using landmarks.
            C.Leading people the way.
            D.Giving people a wrong direction.
(4)According to the last paragraph,we can learn that
            .
A.people in Yucatan always give wrong directions
B.people in Mexico know street's name well
C.body language makes you get lost in Yucatan
D.people in Mexico prefer to use body language

In some parts of Germany, they do bleigiessen,or lead(鉛) jye.aiing.Pour a dollop(團) of molten lead in cold water and whatever shape forms may be telling about the year to come.A heart shape, naturally, means love will come your way.A crown predicts wealth and fortune.A star indicates happiness. But if you see a cross in the lead? You're as good as dead!
               Latin America
If you're in Latin America, make sure you have some colorful underpants to ring in the new year.End—of—the—year partiers put on colorful underwear to ensure certain types of outcomes for the following year.Red for love and yellow for success.
               Naples,Italy
Neapolitans like throwing things out of windows,at least on New Year's Eve.Furniture, kitchen machines, grandma.Well, maybe not the last one.Let's hope not, anyway. This tradition is meant to symbolize an out—with—the—old gesture and getting a brand new beginning for the new year. These days people are a bit more mindful about what they toss down to the street below.
               Spain
In 1909,winegrowers in the Alicante region of Spain had a brilliant idea:start and promote an annual tradition that would involve people having to buy and eat more grapes. One must eat 12 grapes on New Year's Eve to encourage prosperity for the coming year. Now,it's a popular custom in Iberia. But the problem is that one has to eat a grape for each bell strike at midnight.

(1)What does a cross shape of molten lead mean?

            A.Love.
            B.Wealth.
            C.Happiness.
            D.Misfortune.

            A.They hate using furniture.
B.They throw their grandma out of the windows.
C.They are more careful about what to throw.
D.They like making gestures in front of the windows.
(3)Which region has the tradition of eating grapes?

            A.Germany.
            B.Latin America.
            C.Italy.
            D.Spain.

            組卷:6引用:1難度:0.5
          • 19.The Piano Staircase was a project from 2009.This project changes an ordinary stair into a piano. The goal was to see if they could get people to choose the stairs over the escalator (電梯) by making the stairs more fun to do.Researchers set up a subway stair to look and sound like a piano keyboard. These piano stairs will make piano sounds when people walk on them,Thanks to the project,66% of the people who passed by took the stairs over the escalators.Walking up and down the stairs is much healthier than taking an escalator.Lately I have been trying to live a healthier lifestyle.I feel it hard to actually make a change without putting effort in it,but small things like taking the stairs can make a difference.
In our country more than 2 out of 3 adults are considered obese for lack of exercise, many of whom weigh over 100 kilograms. We recently have installed (安裝) one of these piano staircases at Rotterdam City Station, and it has worked well so far.And for me,it can really lighten up my mood.
The stairs look more fun when decorated as a piano.I love the way these stairs look as it gives the stations a much friendlier appearance.People are attracted to walk on the project and to play with it.Apart from actually encouraging people to take part in the project,it raises awareness for physical exercise. However, there is also the weak side. When you first experience the Piano Stairs,it is exciting, but when you have seen the Piano Stairs several times,it can get boring. As a result, they may start taking the escalators again.
I have seen many people on social media expecting this project to be installed near where they live. And personally,I would love to see more of these Piano Staircases as well even if it is just to cheer me up while traveling.

(1)Why did researchers make a piano-like subway stair?

A.To help people to save money.
            B.To make people more comfortable.
C.To encourage people to use the stairs.

(2)What does the underlined word "obese" in paragraph 3 probably mean?

            B.Fat.
            C.Handsome.
            D.Clever.
(3)What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?

A.A brief introduction to the project.
B.The advantage and disadvantage of the project.
C.Some dos and don'ts people need to know on the stairs.
D.The general appearance of the newly installed stairs.
(4)What does the author think about the project?

A.It is costs too much money.
B.It is of little use at all.
C.It should be carried out in more places.
            D.It is not attractive enough.
