          • 11.Two of the hardest things to accomplish in this world are to acquire wealth by honest effort and, having gained it,to learn how to use it properly.Recently I walked into the locker room of a rather well known golf club after finishing a round. It was in the late afternoon and most of the members had left for their homes. But a half-dozen or so men past middle age were still seated at tables talking aimlessly and drinking more than was good for them. These same men can be found there day after day, and, strangely enough, each one of these men had been a man of affairs and wealth, successful in business and respected in the community. If material prosperity were the chief necessity for happiness, then each one should have been happy.Yet,it seemed to me,something very important was missing, else(否則)there would not have been the constant effort to escape the realities of life through scotch and soda. They knew, each one of them, that their productivity had ceased(停止).When a fruit tree ceases to bear its fruit,it is dying. And it is even so with man.
What is the answer to a long and happy existence in this world of ours?I think I found it long ago in a passage from the book of Genesis which caught my eye while I was looking through my Bible. The words were few,but they became memorably impressed on my mind."In the sweat of the face shall you eat the bread."
To me,that has been a challenge from my earliest recollections(memories). In fact, the battle of life,of existence,is a challenge to everyone. The immortal words of St.Paul, too, have been and always will be a great inspiration to me.At the end of the road I want to be able to feel that I have fought a good fight,I have finished the course,I have kept the faith.

(1)The underlined sentence "In the sweat of the face shall you eat the bread" means "
            ".
A.Bread tastes delicious when sweat pours off your face
B.Bread comes from the sweat on your face
C.Failure is the mother of success
            D.No pains,no gains
(2)We learn from the passage that the author

A.was a wealthy person in the community
B.was fond of associating with celebrities(名人)
C.held a positive attitude towards an active life
D.kept a secret of the reason why he was so impressed
(3)What is implied in the passage by the writer?

A.To use wealth properly, eat, drink and be merry.
B.If you cease to struggle, you cease to live.
C.As life is but like a dream,a man is like a fruit tree.
            D.Where there is a will,there is a way.

          • 12.When my students ask me why I live in a tiny house, they ask it in light of all the "sacrifices(犧牲)" I am making. They know that I have moved from a large apartment in the city to a small custom-built home on wheels in the backyard woods. They know I forego running water,Internet connection, sewage(下水道),and reliable phone reception.
However,it was possible for me to be truly happy while living with very few material things. My body responded well,in health, fitness and mood,to a schedule more consistent(一致的)with the natural day and night cycle.Observing the daily sunset, hosting friends for days at a time, reading, writing letters to my families and friends and exploring natural wonders in my spare time all were free and invaluable experiences.
What was necessary to my survival proved to be a rather short list—healthy food, clean and drinkable water, heat source,weather-protecting shelter,weather-suitable clothing, equally important friends and mental and physical stimulations(刺激).
When I returned to life in the US,I couldn't help but sense a deep and uneasy belief that life suddenly changed.I felt disconnected with many things—the earth, others,my food source,my waste disposal, the natural cycle of my body and the productive interests. These are the things I once cared for but now find myself too busy to enjoy. How was it that I was earning literally 40 times my Peace Corps salary and was less healthy, satisfied and intentional in my daily schedule?I found myself asking—what is it to be rich anyway? Therefore, last August I let go of most of my possessions and moved into a tiny house on wheels because I wanted to see if I could live a more enjoyable lifestyle. So far so good.No inconvenience has made up for the many positive benefits that continue to come from this change in lifestyle.I believe that I have made the right decision.

(1)What does the underlined word "forego" in the first paragraph probably mean?

            A.Give up.
            B.Take along.
            C.Care for.
            D.Go after.
(2)What interested the author most when living in the tiny house?

            A.The natural living schedule.
            B.Busy and invaluable experiences.
C.The happiness of the simple life.
            D.The very few material possessions.
(3)What did the author feel when she returned to the US?

            A.She was behind the times.
B.She wouldn't enjoy the modern life.
C.She was rich enough to enjoy the city life.
D.She was disconnected with the outside world.

          • 13.One of the oldest metaphors(隱喻)for human interaction with technology is the relationship of master and slave.Aristotle imagined that technology could replace slavery if machine became automated.Marx and Engels saw things differently. "Masses of laborers are daily and hourly enslaved by the machine," they wrote in the Communist Manifesto.
Today, computers often play both roles.Nicholas Carr,in his new book The Glass Cage:Automation and Us,takes a stand on whether such technology imprisons or liberates its users.
We are increasingly engaged,he argues, but the invisibility of our high-tech traps gives us the image of freedom'.He describes doctors who rely so much on decision-assistance software that they overlook signals that are not obvious from patients.
All of this has obvious implications for the use of technology in classrooms:When do technologies free students to think about more interesting and complex questions, and when do they destroy the very cognitive(認知) capacities that they are meant to improve? The effect of spell check and AutoCorrect software is an example.Psychologists have found the act of forming a word in your mind strengthens your capacity to remember it.When a computer automatically corrects a spelling mistake,we're no longer forced to form the correct spelling in our minds.
This might not seem very important. The process of word formation is not just supplementing spelling skills,it's also destroying students. When students find themselves without automated spelling assistance, they don't face the prospect of freezing to death,as the Inuits did when their GPS malfunctioned, but they're more likely to make errors. This creates a vicious cycle:The more we use the technology, the more we need to use it in all circumstances.
Suddenly, our position as masters of technology starts to seem more insecure.

(1)What did Marx and Engels think of the machine?

A.It did the boring daily work for people.
B.It failed to free people from being enslaved.
C.It gave people more time to enjoy themselves.
D.It was the result of the development of technology.
(2)Which of the following is Nicholas Carr most likely to agree with?

A.Technology is a guarantee of freedom.
B.Doctors should stay away from technology
C.Too much involvement with technology may be risky.
            D.Some decision-assistance software needs improving.
(3)What does the underlined word "this" in paragraph 4 refer to?

A.Students being unable to spell words correctly.
B.Spell check helping students remember more words.
C.Students depending too much on spelling software.
D.Spell check destroying students' cognitive capacities.
(4)Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

A.Is technology making people stupid or not?
B.Which areas are most affected by technology?
C.Are people satisfied with the advancement of technology?
D.Why shouldn't technology be employed in the classroom?
