          • 2.Modern day robots may not be as entertaining as R2 D2 or the robot from Lost in Space, but robots are very important to space exploration and are being used in a variety of different ways for several important reasons.
Robots make great explorers on planets, the moon, and other landing areas.Aside from the earth, just about every surface in the solar system is unsafe for humans to explore. The air on most other planets is insufficient for humans to breathe, making it necessary to wear a space suit and oxygen equipment. The temperatures on these surfaces are much too hot or much too cold for any humans to withstand.Plus there would be complications with radiation, weather, and a lack of gravity.Robots have much less limitation in these areas and can survive much longer under these conditions.
Robots are designed for collecting scientific data.Robots are also able to perform many tasks at one time and can process information much quicker and more efficiently.Important scientific projects from detecting minerals, analyzing ground samples,to finding water are all performed much quicker and accurately by robots.
The use of robots has made the cost of space exploration much less expensive than it would cost for humans to do the work.In order to successfully send humans into space we would need to build a vehicle that can not only carry humans, but also enough food and water to keep them alive for the duration of the trip. Moreover, robots have no problems working for hours on end.Robots never complain, they don't require food or water, and they never need a bathroom break.
Over the past 30 years or so there have been many different types of robots used successfully in the exploration of space.Perhaps the most famous and successful robots are Spirit and Opportunity who have both been exploring the surface of Mars. They have both been very successful with experiments on soil and rocks and have even found evidence of water in Mars' history.

(1)Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

            A.The Development of Robots
            B.The Discovery of Space Exploration
            C.No Robots,No Space Exploration
D.Robots Are Used in Space Exploration
(2)According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A.The use of robots in space exploration costs more than the use of humans.
B.It is dangerous for humans to explore other surfaces in the solar system except the earth.
C.Both Spirit and Opportunity have found the evidence of water on Mars.
D.Many different types of robots have explored the space successfully.
(3)The underlined word "withstand" most probably means "
            ".
            A.remain
            B.bear
            C.defeat
            D.develop
(4)What is the writer's attitude in this passage?

            A.Negative.
            B.Persuasive.
            C.Subjective.
            D.Objective.

          • 4.The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora, which is 161km west of Cusco,it's an 18km walk to Capuliyoc Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina, where travellers camp for the night.Waking early, travellers then have to cross the Apurímac River and walk uphill to camp close to the ruins. Then, the next morning,it's another 2km walk up to the ruins,3,100 m above sea level. To get back?Well,it's the same way you came.
"I've had people in their 60s and 70s do it," said Juan Barrios,a guide from the Adventure Life company. "But some people come out thinking that because it's only 28km from the drop off they can do it in a day.Six or seven days for the hike is best."
It makes sense, then, that Choquequirao draws only about 30 people a day during the high season(June through August).Compare that to the 2,500 people who arrive each day at the famous Incan city of Machu Picchu.
But for those who make the journey, the rewards(回報)are great:beautiful mountain views at every turn, and the chance to explore the wonderful ruins nearly alone.
Believed to be created around the same time as Machu Picchu,in 1445,Choquequirao is actually larger than better-known Machu Picchu. But very little has been written about Peru's other lost city and researchers are still uncovering new parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively untouched.
But officials say that the building of the first cable car(纜車)to Choquequirao will shorten the several-day walk to a 15-minute cable car ride.As a result, the number of travellers that now make the journey each week could turn into 3,000 visitors per day.
Choquequirao is beautiful now because of how untouched it is.Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Díaz in 1710,the ruins still make you feel as though you're the first to find them. Will it be the same when more travellers flood in (大量涌入)?

(1)What does the first paragraph centre on?

            A.How tall Choquequirao is.
B.How to get to Choquequirao easily.
            C.What great views Choquequirao has.
D.How hard the trip to Choquequirao is.
(2)In what way is Choquequirao different from Machu Picchu?

            A.Choquequirao is older.
            B.Choquequirao is quieter.
            C.Choquequirao is smaller.
            D.Choquequirao is better known.
(3)How are the ruins of Choquequirao?

            A.They're still being dug out.
B.They're in a generally poor condition.
C.They're being renewed at the moment.
            D.They've been researched internationally.
(4)What does the author think of Choquequirao in the future?

            A.It will be more attractive.
B.It will develop at a slow speed.
C.It won't necessarily take a turn for the better.
D.It won't be more popular than Machu Picchu.

          • 5.Natural Therapy(療法) The great outdoors:it's the place to head for when you're in need of peace and quiet, open spaces, beautiful scenery and exercise.Whether a huge mountain range or a local country park, these natural areas are perfect for us to refresh us when we live a stressful life.(1)

As an example,in the foothills of the Snowdonia National Park in the UK,specialist therapy sessions are held to help people who suffer from depression, anxiety and stress. (2)
However,it's believed that the setting alone can improve the mood of patients.Art psychotherapist Pamela Stanley told the BBC that there was a "growing body of evidence" to support eco-therapy.
It's true that for most of us connecting with the natural world definitely lifts our spirits. But the mental health charity Mind says eco-therapy has been recognized as a formal type of treatment that can sometimes be prescribed to someone by a doctor. It doesn't involve taking medication.(3)
This natural treatment can take on many forms, including doing yoga in a forest, gardening or even hugging a tree.
Evidence has shown there are many benefits of this "green" therapy. (4)
It's what Dr.Rachel Bragg from the University of Essex calls "psychological restoration".She told the BBC's All in the Mind programme that nature-based therapies should be part of a "toolkit" of care for patients.
               (5)
However,it is an option for therapists to use.And as we become more aware of the causes and effects of mental health,it's good to know that help might lie outside our towns and cities, and that nature can give us a helping hand.

            A.Of course,eco-therapy won't cure everything.
B.Here the patients go outdoors to deal with stress.
C.Outdoor art-related activities are held for participants.
D.Instead,it just develops a person's relationship with nature.
E.These include improving social contact, social and work skill.
F.In nature you can do many things, including reading papers and watching TV.
G.Their relieving power is being used more and more to treat mental health problems.

Sam Watts was a 37-year-old fisherman living and working in Canada. One day,Sam planned to head out into the Pacific at 9 am and work straight through until 5 pm the next day.Joining Sam would be his crewman (船員),24-year-old Pom Ruck.
Although Sam had been warned that a storm was coming, there was little that would keep him from going. As he sailed through the waves about 120 kilometres from land,Sam let out his three-kilometre-long fishing line. The storm was gaining strength on land but had yet to reach the men far offshore(離岸的).After a while, that changed around where he was.Waves rocked the small boat, which began to turn sideways like an amusement park ride, "Get us out of here!" Tom screamed to Sam. "Let's go back!"
With the winds and waves kicking up,the boat began to fill with water.Sam and Tom tried to pull in the ?fishing line together, but the high waves filled the boat with more water, forcing Sam to make a hard decision. He cut the line, losing thousands of dollars worth of equipment and fish in the sea.He then pointed the boat towards a port five hours away.Sam then called his boss,William Fox,to report his position.
With dawn coming,Sam spotted the rise of the mountains on the horizon(地平線).He was figuring out a route through the dangerous waters when suddenly the motor stopped. "I couldn't believe it," Sam said. "We were 24 kilometres off the coast, and the motor died. " High waves raised and dropped the boat, sending the men crashing into the sides. "William,William!" Sam yelled into the radio. "If you're coming to get me,come now!"
               "We're coming!" William shouted back.
            Paragraph 1:
Shortly after, the radio died and the wind continued to blow straight offshore, driving the men farther out to sea._________
