          一、閱讀理解

          • 1.When learning a foreign language, most people fall back on traditional methods:reading, writing, listening and repeating. But if you also gesture with your arms while studying, you can remember the vocabulary better, even months later.Linking a word to brain areas responsible for movement strengthens the memory of its meaning.
This is the conclusion a research team reached after doing multiple experiments recently. "Our results provide neuroscientific(神經系統科學的)evidence for why learning techniques that involve the body's motor system should be used more often," neuroscientist Brian Mathias,a member of the team, said in a news release.
As Mathias and his colleagues describe in The Journal of Neuroscience, they had 22 German-speaking adults learn a total of 90 invented artificial words over four days. While the test adults first heard the new vocabulary, they were shown a video of a person making a gesture that matched the meaning of the word. When the word was repeated, the adults performed the same gesture themselves.
Five months later, they were asked to translate the vocabulary they had learned into German in a multiple-choice test.At the same time, they had an equipment attached to their heads that sent weak magnetic pulses(磁脈沖)to their primary motor cortex(皮層)一the brain area that controls voluntary arm movements. When these interrupting signals were active, the adults found it harder to recall the words accompanied by gestures. When there were no interrupting signals, they found it easier to remember the words. The researchers concluded that the motor cortex contributed to the translation of the vocabulary learned with gestures. This applied to concrete words, such as "camera",as well as abstract ones, such as "thought".
"There's now quite a lot of literature showing that gestures play a role in learning.I think this study takes it a step further and tries to understand why," says Susan Goldin-Meadow,a psychologist at the University of Chicago.Research like this,as well as brain imaging, suggests the activation of the brain's motor areas could be a factor. "It's not necessarily the only reason," Goldin-Meadow adds, "but it's probably a contributor."

(1)What is a suggestion for language learners according to the research findings?

            A.Combining listening with writing.
            B.Repeating the vocabulary regularly.
C.Moving the body in the learning process.
D.Talking with foreigners in the target language.
(2)What were the test adults asked to do in the first part of the test?

            A.Translate the vocabulary into German.
            B.Remember about 100 existing words.
C.Translate some foreign words into gestures.
D.Repeat the movements of a person in a video.
(3)What's the purpose of linking the equipment to the adults' heads?

            A.To affect their motor system.
B.To inspire them to learn actively.
C.To record their brain activity while learning.
D.To stress the role of certain types of gestures.
(4)What's the purpose of the text?

A.To argue for the importance of doing exercise.
B.To introduce new research into language learning.
C.To explore ways to improve human memory.
D.To call on students to learn foreign languages.

          • 2.As the government encourages "social distancing" in the fight against coronavirus, people are facing the prospect of being told to stay at home for weeks. But what if a parent or older person in your life doesn't already have access to video calling tech?
"You might want to consider getting a specialized device to make video calls to your loved ones," says Kate Bevan,an editor of a consumer magazine. "Once they're set up,they're very simple to use but you do have to dig through settings in their apps to connect them and that's not always as easy as it might be."
Age UK,the charity for older people, says that the choice of technology should be "as user-friendly as possible" for those unaccustomed to controlling video-chat software. "Something integrated like a video call app on a smartphone, tablet or a laptop with a built-in camera, for example, will often be easier," says Caroline Abrahams, the charity director. "Older people may also prefer physical interfaces (界面) like a mouse rather than a touchscreen."
"To protect people's privacy,it will be important to ensure that any new devices are secure and not likely to be hacked (非法入侵),and that anyone using a new device has access to ongoing support to help them learn how to use it and deal with any issues or problems," she adds.
An integrated kit can be the easiest solution.Amazon,Google, and Facebook all have smart devices with screens for video calls. One problem with all these devices is their expense and another is their need to be on a stable wi-? connection at all times.Sometimes,a smartphone might be the better option.
But a new smartphone, even a mid-range one,can be much more expensive. And Bevan warns against hand-me-downs past a certain age.Apart from lower camera quality, there can be security concerns. "If you're considering passing old smartphones and tablets on to a relative,do be careful that they're still getting security updates," she says.

(1)What difficulty might older people face during the fight against coronavirus?

A.They cannot use video calling tech.
B.They are not interested in video calling.
C.They fail to afford to buy video devices.
D.They have to stay at home for several weeks.
(2)What kind of device should we choose for older people?

A.The device which is user-friendly and portable.
B.The device which employs physical connection.
C.The device which is equipped with special apps.
D.The device which has a camera and touchscreen.
(3)Which of the following can explain the underlined "these devices"?

            A.Mid-range devices with a built-in camera.
            B.Expensive smartphones sold by Amazon.
C.Smart devices with screens for video calls.
            D.Integrated gadgets with a stable wi-fi connection.
(4)What advice does Bevan give to us when we give a smartphone to the elderly?

A.We have to buy the elderly an expensive one.
B.We should help the elderly set up proper apps.
C.We can give a high-quality phone to the elderly.
D.We must ensure the smartphone gets security updates.

          • 3.Chinese netizens who like to create and use cyber words such as "geilivable" might find a new regulation very "ungeilivable".The new regulation by the General Administration of Press and Publication last week banned the use of Chinglish words created by netizens for publishing in the Chinese language.
"Geilivable",combining the pinyin geili (giving strength) with the English suffix (后綴) for adjectives, literally means "giving power" or "cool".Different suffixes and prefixes were then added to the word. "Hengeilivable" means "very cool",and "ungeilivable" means "dull, not cool at all".
Cyber language is popular among Chinese netizens, who create Chinglish words to reflect phenomenon in society. One example is "antizen",which refers to college graduates who earn a meager salary and live in small rented apartments, like tiny and laborious ants.
David Tool,a professor with the Beijing International Studies University, said it's very interesting to combine Chinese with English to create new words. "English is no longer mysterious to the Chinese people. They can use the language in a flexible way according to their own experiences," Tool said.
At the announcement of the regulation by the General Administration of Press and Publication, netizens expressed their concern.
"The administration is totally 'ungeilivable'," said a netizen named laoda1713. "I know other netizens will shed tears with me…it is a good chance to enrich our language".
"Language is always developing," said a columnist,Wang Pei. "It needs to be updated to absorb foreign culture and folk wisdom. "
But an unnamed official with the administration said that,in fact, many senior staff from news media who supported the regulation were worried that years later, the younger generation would forget how to use formal Chinese expressions. The official also pointed out that the regulation was only for formal publications in Chinese language, and it only banned Chinglish words in the publication.

C.nobody in China will support the new regulation

          • 5.The Spotlight Effect Have you ever felt as if the entire world was watching while you made a mistake?Well, here's some good news:it's likely that no one even noticed.
               (1)
We have this experience not only when we make mistakes but also when we perform well.Every time we do something that is a little different from what we usually do,we may assume that everyone around us will notice. The spotlight effect might happen when we make a mistake in a game, have a bad hair day,or give a terrible answer in class.(2)
In these moments,it feels like everyone is watching.
The spotlight effect exists because we all get used to seeing things through our own eyes.Every person is the main character in his or her story, and the events of our lives seem to have great importance.(3)

The spotlight effect is a very common part of the human experience. However,in some cases,it can lead to extreme social anxiety and nervousness around other people.Everyone suffers some degree of social anxiety. We all care about what others think, and we all want to be liked. It's normal to wonder about what effect we have on other people.(4)
If someone is so nervous that they can't make good decisions, then it's time to take action and improve the situation.
Learning about the spotlight effect is important because it can help us reduce our anxiety.Next time you feel like everyone is staring at you, remind yourself that it's just your mind playing tricks on you.(5)
If you fill your mind with thoughts of your friends and family,it will help you be less self-conscious.

A.However, this can be a problem when the anxiety is too much to handle.
B.That's why fewer people notice the embarrassing circumstances they encounter.
C.Another good exercise is to make an effort to notice the people around you, rather than focusing on yourself.
D.The spotlight effect is a trick of the mind that makes us believe that people notice us more often than they really do.
E.What you can do at this moment is to ignore them.
F.We are so busy examining ourselves that we actually observe very little about everyone around us.
G.It can also appear when we score a big goal, ask someone on a date,or do a good deed.

Eric's leather(皮革)boots were worn out. They didn't protect his feet from the rain, and his socks became totally wet as water went through the holes in his shoes.Stacey attempted to fix the holes, but it was no use.Eric still walked to school with that pair of broken shoes. How much he wished he could also have new, comfortable and expensive shoes his classmates wore!
One day,Eric returned from school and complained to Stacey, "It was raining today.Water has leaked into my shoes again.I hate my boots! Why can't you get me new ones?" Stacey was sad and helpless. "I spent our last savings on your sister's medicine. She's sick.Erie, you know that. You need to act like a responsible big brother!" she answered.Tears welled up in Eric's eyes. "I hate you!" he shouted. "You only care about Lily! You don't love me!" Then he cried and ran to his room.
After preparing dinner,Stacey went to his room with his dinner plate. "I'm sorry,Eric," she whispered to comfort him. "We're going through a very tough journey recently. But I'll get you new shoes in the future." But Erie refused to listen to her.
The next day, when Eric went to class,he took his seat quietly and hid his feet under his chair,as usual. He was embarrassed to show his boots.
As the math teacher.Mrs Fletcher, entered the class, all the students greeted her. "Today,we have a very special friend with us," she smiled. "Everyone, please welcome Ben,your new classmate."
Soon after,a boy with a pair of crutches(拐杖)entered. The new boy only had one leg,Eric was shocked. He and all his classmates thought how unlucky Ben was.And they thought Ben must be very shy and sad. They didn't know Ben was actually outgoing, confident and optimistic. While they were showing great pity to him,Mrs Fletcher asked Ben to introduce himself.
