          • 11.Valerie Bolduc is exploring a path under a four-lane highway to fit wildlife cameras, when she gets stuck in the mud. "I am really stuck," says the road ecology student, trying to pull her feet out of a streambed that travels through the concrete culvert(涵洞)of Quebec Route 117. "I do not want to be a deer going through that."
Bolduc's dilemma makes evident the risks for wild animals using the same path.
A warming climate is pushing many animals to migrate toward higher latitudes(緯度)to remain within their desirable environments, but that comes with risks as they cross dangerous areas, such as highways. In eastern Canada,Bolduc and other researchers and conservationists are trying to preserve safe corridors(走廊)for wildlife.
The motion-activated cameras they have brought will record which species are using the tunnels. An outward-facing camera will identify what animals approach but do not enter, perhaps prevented by traffic noise, the tunnel's size or other factors.
Bolduc explains that this highway running through southern Quebec separates a series of Canadian national and regional parks on either side, along with their animal populations. "It's super important," she notes, "because the animals want to move north and they encounter these and then can they move through? Will they get hit by a car? We'll need to figure that out.And we need to help them,at least I want to help them."
After finishing fitting their cameras on the northbound side of the highway,Bolduc and her team decide they need an alternate path to the other side to avoid another misfortune in the mud. "We're generally trying to be safe," Bolduc says, "but for the animals, this is their life!"

(1)What can we learn from Bolduc's experience of being trapped?

A.It is difficult to fit wildlife cameras.
B.She is out of luck during the exploration.
C.Road conditions of the highway are unexpected.
D.It is dangerous for wild animals to cross this area.
(2)What do these animals move to higher latitudes for?

            A.Less traffic noise.
            B.Warmer climate.
            C.Safe corridors.
            D.Favorable environments.
(3)What function is expected of the wildlife cameras?

A.To record the changes in traffic flow.
B.To figure out difficulties wild animals face.
C.To track animals in and around the tunnels.
D.To photograph the living environment of wild animals.
(4)Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

            A.High Tech Protects Wildlife
            B.Animal Migration Is under Threat
C.Ecologists Fear the Future of Wildlife
D.Researchers Seek Paths for Animals to Migrate

          • 12.Scientists have created a new app designed to identify dangerous mosquitoes based on sounds the insects make. The app, called Abuzz,is aimed at helping fight major diseases spread by mosquitoes.
Haripriya Vaidehi Narayanan is one of the researchers who helped develop the app.Narayanan told VOA that anyone with a mobile phone could use the app to identify mosquitoes. "If they see a mosquito around, they just take out their phone, open up the app, point their phone towards the mosquito and hit the record button," she said. "Then, when the mosquito flaps its wings and starts flying around,it makes that noise, that annoying buzzing noise. That noise is what gets recorded by the Abuzz app." she added.
Many diseases that mosquitoes carry do not have cures or vaccines(疫苗).So,targeting the flying insects is the best way to control them. "The most important step is to know where the mosquitoes are," Narayanan said.
Traditional methods for hunting mosquitoes are costly and can take a very long time. The process also requires labor-intensive trapping as well as trained scientists to identify the insects.
Manu Prakash is a professor of bioengineering at Stanford University and a lead investigator on the project. He says that out of about 3,500 different mosquito species, only about 40 are dangerous to humans.Prakash says the goal of the project was to find out whether the mosquitoes around a person's house are just an annoyance,or whether they are possibly dangerous.
When mosquitoes move their wings up and down, they produce buzzing sounds. But each kind of mosquito makes a slightly different buzzing noise. The app records these sounds.Users of the app can get an answer by recording as little as one or two seconds of the buzzing sound. The app compares this recording to a collection of other recordings. It then predicts which species of mosquito it is most likely to be.
By making use of mosquito information worldwide, the app can help build maps of where dangerous mosquitoes are. This can help scientists and health officials identify areas where disease is likely to break out and where to target mosquito control.

(1)Why is it important to locate mosquitoes?

A.Because they are very small and hard to find.
B.Because diseases carried by them are a big problem.
C.Because mosquitoes flap their wings very quickly.
D.Because the buzzing noise of mosquitoes is annoying.
(2)What will Abuzz do after it records the sound of a mosquito?

A.Compare it to a database and identify its species.
B.Make a somewhat different buzzing noise.
C.Release some chemicals to kill the mosquito.
D.Draw a map of the place where the mosquito was.
(3)In which way could Abuzz help people?

A.It can help people control the number of mosquitoes.
B.It can help people avoid some species of mosquitoes.
C.It can help predict where mosquito-carried diseases are most likely to occur.
D.It can help record the mosquito hiding places very quickly.
(4)What is the best title for the passage?

A.The Different Species of Mosquitoes in the World
B.New Ways to Fight Disease Caused by Mosquitoes
C.How to Identify Sounds Made by Different Mosquitoes

          • 13.The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora, which is 161km west of Cusco,it's an 18km walk to Capuliyoc Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina, where travellers camp for the night.Waking early, travellers then have to cross the Apurímac River and walk uphill to camp close to the ruins. Then, the next morning,it's another 2km walk up to the ruins,3,100 m above sea level. To get back?Well,it's the same way you came.
"I've had people in their 60s and 70s do it," said Juan Barrios,a guide from the Adventure Life company. "But some people come out thinking that because it's only 28km from the drop off they can do it in a day.Six or seven days for the hike is best."
It makes sense, then, that Choquequirao draws only about 30 people a day during the high season(June through August).Compare that to the 2,500 people who arrive each day at the famous Incan city of Machu Picchu.
But for those who make the journey, the rewards(回報)are great:beautiful mountain views at every turn, and the chance to explore the wonderful ruins nearly alone.
Believed to be created around the same time as Machu Picchu,in 1445,Choquequirao is actually larger than better-known Machu Picchu. But very little has been written about Peru's other lost city and researchers are still uncovering new parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively untouched.
But officials say that the building of the first cable car(纜車)to Choquequirao will shorten the several-day walk to a 15-minute cable car ride.As a result, the number of travellers that now make the journey each week could turn into 3,000 visitors per day.
Choquequirao is beautiful now because of how untouched it is.Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Díaz in 1710,the ruins still make you feel as though you're the first to find them. Will it be the same when more travellers flood in (大量涌入)?

(1)What does the first paragraph centre on?

            A.How tall Choquequirao is.
B.How to get to Choquequirao easily.
            C.What great views Choquequirao has.
D.How hard the trip to Choquequirao is.
(2)In what way is Choquequirao different from Machu Picchu?

            A.Choquequirao is older.
            B.Choquequirao is quieter.
            C.Choquequirao is smaller.
            D.Choquequirao is better known.
(3)How are the ruins of Choquequirao?

            A.They're still being dug out.
B.They're in a generally poor condition.
C.They're being renewed at the moment.
            D.They've been researched internationally.
(4)What does the author think of Choquequirao in the future?

            A.It will be more attractive.
B.It will develop at a slow speed.
C.It won't necessarily take a turn for the better.
D.It won't be more popular than Machu Picchu.

          • 14.It happens every spring.Flowers suddenly burst out everywhere on the same day,as if they were in tune with one another. But how exactly do plants "know" when to flower?
It is a question that has puzzled biologists for years. But according to Science Daily,a US research group may have finally answered it---the secret lies in a protein called FKF1 which allows plants to sense the differences in day lengths so that they can tell the seasons are changing.Researchers spotted the FKF1 protein when they were studying a plant called Arabidopsis. They found that the protein is a photoreceptor. This means it is sensitive to ,and can be activated by sunlight.
Plants produce this protein every day in the late afternoon throughout the year.If there is no light at this time, for example,in winter when the sun goes down early, the protein won't be activated. But when spring comes and the days get longer, the protein can be activated by day-light and the plants "know" it is time to flower. " The presence of light in the late afternoon is the signal for plants that the days are getting longer and that it is the optimal time for flowering," explained Takato Imaizumi, assistant professor at the University of Washington and leader of the study.
This daylight-sensing system also keeps plants from flowering when conditions are poor for growing, such as during autumn or winter when the weather is cold and days are short.
Although researchers have only studied how the FKF1 protein works in the Arabidopsis, they believe it is similar in many other more complex plants, including crops like rice and wheat. This could be useful to the agricultural industry.
" If we can control the timing of flowering,we might be able to increase crop production by speeding or delaying this,'said Imaizumi, ."Also,if we could control the timing of flowering in horticultural (園藝的) plants, they may be worth more commercially "
New technology based on this research might also lead to higher production of biofuel plants. This would be helpful for providing energy.

A.Flowering is rarely a synchronized process.
B.The FKF1 protein can only be found in Arabidopsis.

          寫作 第一節

          • 18.A bright sun setting,Sylvia was driving home her cow,a valued companion, wandering through the forest, and listening to birds' singing.Suddenly the air was cut by a sharp whistle not far away.Sylvie knew it wasn't a bird's whistle.
"Hello, little girl," a young man came into sight suddenly, "I've lost my way.Do you think I can spend the night at your house?" Sylvia was alarmed, but still agreed.
When they arrived, her grandma,Mrs.Tilley, welcomed the guest with hospitality. The man explained
to them that he was an ornithologist (鳥類學者). "Do you cage them up?" Sylvia asked doubtfully. "Oh no," he answered enthusiastically, "I shoot dozens and dozens of them myself, and preserve them with special chemicals."
"Sylvia knows a lot about birds, too." Her grandmother said proudly.
"Really?I caught a glimpse of a very rare bird,a little white heron (蒼鷺),which keeps me around.Have you seen it,too?" He gently asked, looking at Sylvia with some hope.
But Sylvia was watching a frog in the narrow footpath.
"It's a tall, white bird with soft feathers and long thin legs.It probably has its nest at the top of a tall tree." The man continued eagerly.
Sylvia's heart gave a wild beat. She knew that special white bird! She had seen it on the other side of the forest and had once approached softly near where it stood.
The young man added desperately, "I would give $100 to you."
Her grandma gave amazed attention to it,but Sylvia still watched the road.
The next day the young man hovered about the woods, and Sylvia kept him company, having lost her first fear. They had such a wonderful day to enjoy the birds' songs and the thick branches. She had never seen anyone so handsome and charming.A strange excitement filled her heart.Sylvia would have liked him better without his gun.She could not understand why he killed the birds he seemed to like so much. She felt her heart tremble every time he shot an unsuspecting bird as it was singing in the trees.
