          • 17.As a wildlife-conservation biologist studying climate change,I want to understand the evolving environment through the eyes of large animals. My work-usually in cold, remote places-involves finding animals, and ways to eat, sleep and be warm.I might suffer, but I get insights that others cannot into what animals are doing.
For about 15 years I've been interested in musk oxen(麝香牛).This picture was taken on Wrangel Island, off the northeast coast of Russia, when I was studying how musk oxen react to polar bears.Because polar ice is melting more polar bears are hunting on land, and they are known to have killed musk oxen. These herd animals typically don't flee from enemies such as grizzly bears. They tend to form groups instead, and male male oxen have killed grizzlies.Would they try to kill polar bears too?
To find out,I dressed as a polar bear, pulling a bear head on and placing a cloth over a range finder, camera and data books.I was cold and nervous.I didn't want to be killed by a charging musk ox-or by anything else.If some oxen charged and made an attack,I'd throw off my costume and stand up straight,as I'm doing here;so far, that had stopped them.I'd also encountered a female polar bear with new born babies, but she'd left me alone. This picture is from the end of a session, and I'd lived another day.Whew!
I learnt that musk oxen are more likely to flee from polar bears than from grizzlies. But during this trip to Russia,I was arrested-over a date error on my permits. In court, the only word I understood was 'CIA'.I was let go,but banned from returning for three years,so I'm now studying the huemul,an endangered species of deer that lives in the shadows of glaciers at the tip of South America. As glaciers melt, how will huemul populations respond?

(1)How do musk oxen protect themselves from grizzly bears?

A.By fleeing to polar ice quickly.
B.By getting together to fight back.
C.By charging at grizzlies one by one.
D.By drawing support from polar bears.
(2)Why did the author dress as a polar bear?

            A.To better understand musk oxen.
B.To familiarize himself with its habitat.
C.To better protect his camera equipment.
D.To keep warm in extreme natural conditions.
(3)Why did the author have to stop his research in Russia?

A.He was banned for am illegal permit.
B.His research there was not approved.
C.some wildlife biologists had accused him
D.He would study the huemul in south America
(4)Which of the following is a suiable title for the text?

            A.An Awkward Biologist
            B.The Changeable Climate
            C.Would Musk Oxen Be Killed?
D.Who Wants To Be a Polar Bear?

          • 18.There is an old joke among pilots that says the ideal flight crew is a computer,a pilot and a dog.The computer's job is to fly the plane. The pilot is there to feed the dog.And the dog's job is to bite the pilot if he tries to touch the computer.
Handing complex tasks to computers is not new.But recent progress in machine learning,a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI),has enabled computers to handle many problems which were previously beyond jye.aim.The result has been an AI boom, with computers moving into everything from medical diagnosis and insurance to self-driving cars.
There is a problem, though.Machine learning works by giving computers the ability to train themselves, which adapts their programming to the task at hand.People struggle to understand exactly how those self-written programs do what they do.When algorithms(計算機程序)are doing small tasks, such as playing chess or recommending a film to watch, this "black box" problem can be safely ignored. When they are deciding who gets a loan,or how to drive a car through a crowded city,it is potentially harmful. And when things go wrong, then customers, regulators and the courts will want to know why.
For some people this is a reason to hold back AL France's digital-economy minister,Mounir Mahjoubi, has said that the government should not use any algorithm whose decisions cannot be explained. But that is an overreaction. The difficulties caused by clever computers are not unheard- of.Society already has plenty of experience dealing with problematic black boxes;the most common are called human beings, who can't even figure out what's going on in a brajye.ai.In response to the weakness in humans, society has evolved a series of workable coping mechanisms, called laws, rules and regulations. Many of these can be applied to machines as well.
Humans have worked with computers on complex tasks for decades. One lesson from such applications is that, wherever possible, people should supervise(監督)the machjye.aies.In that joke, pilots are vital in case something happens that is beyond the scope of artificial intelligence. As computers spread, companies and governments should ensure the first line of defence is a real person who can overrule the algorithms if necessary.

(1)Why is the joke mentioned in Paragraph 1?

            A.To make people laugh.
            B.To foresee future aeroplane industry.
C.To introduce the latest model of aeroplanes.
D.To raise people's awareness of computers performing complex tasks.
(2)What has caused the increasing application of computers in various fields?

            A.The shortage of labor force.
            B.The rise of artificial intelligence.
            C.The encouragement of government.
            D.The development of medical economy.
(3)Why are some people opposed to AI?

            A.Black boxes always go wrong.
            B.Laws forbid machine learning.
C.They don't understand how AI works.
D.Computers are trying to replace human beings.

          • 19.In some places, people collect honey from wild bees. This is common in many parts of the world, especially South Asia.Honey hunting is a local tradition in southern India but it is not an undemanding job.The bees in southern India can grow up to the size of the smallest adult human finger. And these giant honey bees build their hives (蜂窩) on the sides of mountains!
It takes many years for a honey hunter to learn to collect honey from these hives. From a young age the honey hunter learns everything about bees.He practices climbing hundreds of meters above the ground. Before the honey season, the honey hunter prepares for many days.
When the day of the honey hunt season arrives, the honey hunter goes to the edge of the mountain early in the morning. He climbs down with a rope and lights some dry branches on fire. The smoke makes the bees leave the hive. With the bees flying around the honey hunter,he uses a long sharp stick to gently get pieces of the wax (蜜蠟) filled with honey. He then takes them back to the village in a box made of bamboo.
Usually the hunter takes some honey and leaves some of the hive on the mountainside. He does not take the part of the hive with the baby bees in it since he does not want to destroy the home of the bees. When the honey hunter returns, the village celebrates!
"They have been hunting honey in this way for more than 2,000 years.Honey was and still is an important part of their diet, cooking and medicine," Simone Gie from the organization Slow Food International, said.

            組卷:2引用:1難度:0.5
          • 20.Folklore is the branch of the study of man which deals with local customs, tales and traditions.Everybody is a storehouse of folklore, though not everybody realizes it.Often, indeed, those who have never heard the word folklore have the greatest store of it,for the people with least book education commonly cherish most firmly old ideas and superstitions which have been passed on by word of mouth for generations.Everyone has heard stories of ghosts, witches, fairies, and giants. We all know some proverbs and have come across such ideas as,for example, that it is lucky to see black cat and unlucky to see a single magpie. We keep certain seasons of the year as festivals, such as Christmas, and we are familiar with the special customs connected with weddings and funerals. All such things are of interest to those who study folklore.
People who study folklore won't criticize the old beliefs and practices they come across as silly, childish,or old-fashioned.Instead,they will try to collect accurate records of them and then see how these are connected with other ideas and customs of other places or times.By comparing with what is known of olden times or the folklore of other countries, they try to discover how certain beliefs and practices came into being, and what purpose they serve now or used to serve in the past.
Often we find that the beliefs which seem most peculiar and unreasonable, and the customs which appear least practical, are of the greatest interest and importance because they are commonly the oldest.Sometimes they were part of an ancient ritual or served a useful purpose when people's way of life was different from what it is now.So we not only learn about what people thought and did in the past but are better able to understand present customs.People often keep up customs when they have forgotten the original reason for them, and in the course of time a fresh reason gets attached to the custom. Thus, when some joker ties an old shoe to the back of the taxi taking the bride and bridegroom to the station for their honeymoon,he would say it was "for luck",but actually a shoe is an old fertility (繁殖力) symbol and has a place in the wedding customs of China and Palestine.

(1)The underlined word "they" (in Para.2)most probably refers to
            .
            A.practices and beliefs
            B.customs and traditions
            C.records and tales
            D.places or times
(2)It is most unlikely for people who study folklore to
            .
A.collect as many records of old beliefs and practices as possible
B.compare the present customs with those of the olden times
C.criticize the old beliefs and superstitions as silly or childish
D.find out the purpose the certain beliefs and practices serve or used to serve
(3)Which of the following statements is true about customs?

A.The customs which do not appear practical mean nothing to most people.
B.The reasons for certain customs may change in the course of history.
C.People who practice customs are quite familiar with their origins.
D.The wedding customs in China and Palestine are of great similarity.
(4)What would be the best title for the passage?

            A.What Does Folklore Really Mean?
B.How Do People Keep Up Customs?
            C.Who Studies Tales And Traditions?
D.When Did Some Old Beliefs Begin?

          第三部分:寫作第一節:閱讀下面短文,按照要求用英語回答問題。(共1小題;每小題10分,滿分10分)

          • 21.第一節 閱讀下面短文,根據題目要求用英文回答問題。請在答題卡指定區域作答。
Sleep in Different CulturesIt is apparent that there are significant differences in sleep patterns in different parts of the world, and that sleep patterns have also changed over time.Traditions, cultural values, local conditions and environments all influence sleep patterns.
One major source of these differences is the widespread use of artificial(人造的) light, which has led to changes in the sleep patterns in the industrialized world. It is thought that today we sleep several hours less than before industrialization.Artificial light has encouraged people to go to bed later and to sleep the whole night through(Monophasic Sleep),rather than the more broken-up and flexible sleep patterns (Biphasic Sleep).During the long nights of the winter months, our ancestors used to break sleep up into two or more parts, separated by an hour or two of quiet restfulness.
Even within the developed world, there are still significant differences in sleep patterns.A study carried out in ten countries in 2002 showed some of these regional variations. For instance, the results of sleeping time at night from individual countries varied from 6 hours 53 minutes in Japan to 8 hours 24 minutes in Portugal.Over 42% of Brazilians took regular afternoon naps (short sleeps),compared to only 12% of Japanese people.
A daytime nap is a common habit among adults in many countries.Spain,in particular, has raised the nap almost to the level of an art form. The experience of Japan is a clear example of the way a culture change can affect sleep patterns. In the 1950s,Japan was keen to rebuild.Japanese workers were encouraged to wake early and finish late as well. The work-place nap was encouraged as a way for a worker to increase productivity, even though in fact it probably degraded the quality of night-time sleep even more.Today, sleep is perhaps more undervalued in Japan than anywhere else.
It is clear, then, that there are cultural and historical differences in our sleep patterns.Yet the one thing that stays the same across all cultures is the one truth about sleeping:We all do it!

            (1)What affects the sleep patterns?

            (2)What is Biphasic Sleep?

(3)Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
            > The work-place nap was encouraged and in fact it probably increases the quality of night-time sleep even more.

(4)Among the sleep patterns in different countries mentioned in the passage, which one do you like most and why?(In about 40 words)
