          • 11.The World Health Organization (WHO) recently said that it planned to add gaming disorder(游戲障礙)to its new list of disease classifications, angering the gaming industry but pleasing doctors who hope it may make treatment more easily available.
Some US experts said it would make little difference when it comes to helping people with the disorder, although others said it would bring attention to a disorder that people sometimes don't recognize.
Many of us enjoy video games, but does playing our favorite game for a couple of hours every night mean we're suffering from gaming disorder? No,according to the WHO.
The symptoms(癥狀)listed by the WHO include a lack of control over gaming, treating gaming more seriously than other life interests and daily activities, and continuing to play games despite the negative consequences that playing them might have.
"The behavior pattern is enough to result in large damage to one's personal, family,or social life." the WHO said.
Meanwhile,Douglas Gentile of low State University has carried out influential research into the cause of gaming addiction in young people.
"I and many others had assumed that gaming is not really a problem but is a symptom of other problems," he told NBC News. Many had thought it was simply a failure of self-control.
To see if it was,Gentile's team studied a group of children who had been gaming for several years. "We found that when kids became addicted, their anxiety increased and their grades decreased," Gentile said. When kids were able to back off from gaming, their symptoms disappeared,he added.
Gentile thinks medical organizations should pay attention to the WHO's suggestion.
"This isn't an issue of opinion;it's an issue of science," he said.
"This is a major scientific and medical organization. They don't do things lightly and without reason.
Dr Petros Levounis, chair of psychiatry(精神病學)at the New Jersey Medical School at Rutgers University, said that he hoped the WHO's suggestion would lead to more research into obsessive(過度的)behavior among all types of people.

(1)Which of the following is a sign of gaming disorder according to the WHO?

            A.Putting games before everything else.
B.Playing games for several hours every night.
C.Having no hobbies but playing games.
D.Keeping playing until winning the games.
            (2)Why is Gentile's research mentioned?

A.To explain the symptoms of gaming addiction.
B.To show the impact of gaming disorder.
C.To show the reasons behind the WHO's decision.
D.To introduce the study that influenced the WHO's proposal.
(3)What did Levounis think of the WHO's decision?

A.It needed further research to make it more convincing.
B.It would do little to help people with gaming addiction.
C.It would encourage new cures for gaming disorder.
D.It would encourage studies about diseases similar to gaming disorder.
            (4)What's the article mainly about?

A.The WHO explaining what gaming disorder is.
B.New research findings about gaming disorder.
C.The benefits of defining gaming as a disease.
D.The discussions about defining gaming disorder as a disease.

          • 12.These days, more and more Chinese people enjoy sending and receiving messages on the phone. It can help them to get the latest news and communicate with friends. But I think I should read more books besides the textbooks. The more, the better. It can open my eyes and improve my language skills.Of course,it also can help me to get good grades.Do you know how to read more and learn more? Here are some tips for you.
◆Be clear about your purpose for reading
Before you start reading, ask yourself why you are reading this book. Most people read for two main reasons, pleasure or knowledge.Being clear about your reading purpose can not only help you choose the books you really need to read, but also remind you why reading the book is important to you,so you will keep reading and complete the book faster.
◆Read only what you are interested in
No matter what you are reading,it is important to enjoy what you read.Your friends may tell you the books they love, but those books might not necessarily be the ones you enjoy.
◆Give up books that you don't enjoy
You may have chosen books that you are interested in,and they serve your purpose. But while you are reading them, there may still be some books that you don't enjoy reading.Whenever you realise that you aren't enjoying the book you are reading, give it up.Remember reading shouldn't be a chore.
               ◆Set a reading goal
It is interesting that I read the books borrowed from libraries faster than those I bought. The reason is the books I bought don't have a due date!I don't need to return those books.Having a reading goal helps you work out how much reading you need to do in a week or even a day. Before you read each book, ask yourself what time you need to complete this book by.

          • 13.The government's top Great Barrier Reef scientist says a third mass coral bleaching(珊瑚白化)event in five years is a clear signal that the marine wonder is "calling for urgent help on climate change".Corals can recover from mild bleaching, but severe bleaching can kill corals.
Prof Terry Hughes, director of the Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University, surveyed 1,036 reefs from a plane over nine days in late March.
The marine park authority also had an observer on the flights. The survey has released maps showing that serious levels of bleaching occurred in 2020 in all three sections of the reef northern, central and southern. Some 25% of the reefs were seriously bleached-meaning that more than 60% of the corals on each reef had bleached.
The Great Barrier Reel has experienced five mass bleaching events-1998.2002,2016,2017 and 2020 -all caused by rising ocean temperatures driven by global heating.Hughes said there probably would not be the same level of coral death in the north and central regions in 2020 as in previous years, but this was partly because previous bleaching outbreaks had kill off the less heat -tolerant species The 2020 bleaching was second only to 2016 for severity(嚴重性),Hughes said.
Dr.David Wachenfeld, chief scientist at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority told Guardian Australia, "My greatest fear is that people will lose hope for the reef.Without hope there's no action.People need to see these bleaching events. They are clear signals that the Great Barrier Reef is calling for urgent help and for us to do everything we can".
Measures to improve the ability of recovery of the reef include improving water quality, controlling outbreaks of coral-eating starfish, and research and development to improve the heat tolerance of corals. "However, climate change brings a new scale of impact unlike anything we have seen before. Thus, dealing with the climate problem is the basis for everything else to work, " Wachenfeld said.

          • 14.They say everything is bigger in Texas. While that may be true, some of the best things in Texas are quite small.Case in point:tiny Mount Vernon,a town of just under 3,000 people. But if you do come across Mount Vernon, you might just get an intention to stay. That happens a lot around here, and it's worth noting how remarkable that is.
Tom Wilkinson was born in Mount Vernon 87 years ago and moved back after he retired from his career as a college English professor in Dallas.Like many of his neighbors,Wilkinson can track his ancestors back to the pioneers who settled here in the 1870s.And like many,he values the simple life you can't easily find in big cities. "People are still polite. They hold the door open for you." he says,"We grow strong roots here!"
Preserving and honoring the past has been key to helping Mount Vernon survive. The residents have restored and reopened some of the empty stores, including the old barbershop, built more than 100 years ago.An old general store was turned into a combination space.Wander in on any given day and you might find a book club discussion,a Coffee Ladies meet-up,or a work session for the local genealogy(家譜)group among the tables of people chatting over cups of coffee and plates of food.
Mount Vernon has the kind of big hearts you tend to find in a small town. For instance, when a local policeman was diagnosed with cancer last year,ten-year-old Lola McKellar set up a lemonade stand to raise money for his treatments. In 2015,when a 350-year flood sent water rushing into local homes,an army of volunteers showed up to get a wheelchair-bound neighbor and his wife to higher ground, and then came back to help rebuild.

(1)What does the author think of Mount Vernon?

            A.Remote.
            B.Wealthy.
            C.Primitive.
            D.Attractive.
(2)Why did Tom Wilkinson come back to Mount Vernon?

A.He preferred the simple and natural life.
B.He could continue his language teaching.
C.He could live together with his ancestors.
D.He could meet more neighbors of his age.
(3)What can we infer about people's way of life in Mount Vernon from Paragraph 3?

A.It is in danger of extinction.
B.It is quickly changing over time.
            C.It is conservative but harmonious.
D.It is being disturbed by the outside world.
(4)What is the last paragraph mainly about?

            A.The history of Mount Vernon.
            B.The humanity of Mount Vernon.
            C.The volunteers of Mount Vernon.
            D.The reconstruction of Mount Vernon.

          • 15.Solutions to Climate Change
There are personal lifestyle changes that you can make and that,to some extent, can help reduce your carbon impact. Not all are right for everybody. But applying just a few of them could make a difference.
               Move closer to work.
Transportation is one of the leading sources of greenhouse gas emissions. (1)
One way to dramatically cut transportation fuel needs is to move closer to work, use mass transportation,or switch to walking, cycling or some other modes of transport that does not require anything other than human energy.
               Consume less.
               (2)
Whether by quitting an automobile or employing a reusable grocery sack, cutting back on consumption results in fewer fossil fuels being burned to extract, produce and ship products around the globe.
               (3)

A potentially simpler and even bigger effect can be produced by doing more with less.Citizens of many developed countries are energy-wasters,whether by speeding in a gas-wasting vehicle or leaving the lights on when not in a room.Similarly, employing more efficient refrigerators, air conditioners and other appliances can cut electricity bills. (4)
You can turn the lights or your computers off when you leave the office.
               Stop cutting down trees.
When purchasing wood products, such as furniture or flooring, buy used goods or,failing that, wood proved officially to have been sustainably harvested. The Amazon rainforest and other forests are more than the lung of the earth. (5)

            A.Be energy efficient.
            B.Use few electrical appliances.
C.But it doesn't have to be that way.
D.Such efforts can also be usefully employed at work.
E.They may also be humans' short-term hope for limiting climate change.
F.The easiest way to cut back on greenhouse gas emissions is simply to buy less stuff.
G.Citizens spend more money on electricity to power devices when they're off than when they're on.

As I rode out of the grocery store on a scooter cart (滑板車).I got funny looks from the other shoppers.People didn't know what to make of a 15-something,able-bodied high schoolgirl riding a cart clearly designed for the elderly or disabled.
The scooter cart wasn't for me,but for my 80-year-old grandmother, who waited in the car until I brought her the scooter.
My grandmother came to us last weekend.Mom said she was old now so it wasn't suitable for her to live alone. This morning, she asked me to go shopping with her. This made me remember what a special treat it once was to be with her when I was a little girl.
We headed into the supermarket together for our regular grocery shopping adventure. It turned out that shopping with my grandma wasn't all smooth sailing. She always seemed to want to get away from me.Perhaps she was embarrassed by me.Maybe she just wanted a little freedom.Whatever the reason, often, the moment I turned-my back,Stevie McQueen raced away in her cart, heading for parts unknown.I sweated, trying to follow her closely.
Then we came to the fruit part. She raised her eyes and looked up at me, "Dear, can you get me some apples?"
"Sure," I replied. "I'll be right back,so don't go anywhere."
I left her looking at bananas,but.jye.ai the 30 seconds it took me to gel the apples, she was gone.I searched the produce section for her between the towering packs of fruits and vegetables but it was fruitless.
Anxiously,I turned to a shop assistant for help. She came running back, "Your grandmother is in the bakery (烘焙間).She wasn't hurt but the bakery was in a mess."
