1.A decade ago,at the end of my first semester teaching at Captain,my student Jack stopped by for office hours. He sat down and burst into tears. My mind started cycling through a list of events that could make a college junior cry:His girlfriend had broken up with him;he had been accused of cheating in exams;he forgot to turn in papers before the deadline. "I just got my first A minus," he said.
Year after year,I watch in depression as students are crazy about getting straight A's.Some sacrifice their health;a few have even tried to charge their school after failure. They believe top marks are a ticket to elite graduate schools and rewarding job opportunities.I was one of them.I started college with the goal of graduating with a GPA of 4.0.It would be a reflection of my brainpower and willpower, showing that I had the right things to succeed. But I was wrong.
The evidence is clear:Across industries, research shows that the association between grades and job performance is modest in the first year after college and insignificant within a handful of years. For example,at Microsoft, once employees are two or three years out of college, their grades have nothing to do with their performance.(Of course,it must be said that if you got D's,you probably wouldn't end up at Microsoft.)
Academic grades rarely assess qualities like creativity, leadership and teamwork skills,or social, emotional and political intelligence.Yes,straight A students master large amounts of information and reproduce it in exams. But career success is rarely about finding the right solution to a problem-it's more about finding the right problem to solve. This might explain why Steve Jobs finished high school with a GPA of 2.65,and Martin Luther King Jr.jye.ai only one A in his four years at Morehouse.
(1)Why did Jack feel sad?
A.His girlfriend abandoned him.
B.He was caught cheating in exams.

D.He didn't hand in his paper in time.
(2)What did the author once believe?
A.It was wrong to care too much about marks.
B.Failure was schools' fault.
C.Marks didn't reflect willpower and brainpower.
D.Top marks meant well-paid job offers.
(3)Why are the employees at Microsoft mentioned?
A.To indicate academic performance is important.
B.To stress the company values employees with top marks.
C.To introduce successful examples in the technology industry.
D.To show academic excellence isn't a strong predictor of career performance.
(4)What should people focus more on to succeed?
A.How to solve a problem.
B.What problem to be solved.
C.How to be a creative leader.
D.What to do with detailed information.組卷:9引用:2難度:0.5 -
2.Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material.Sian Beilock,a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers.The students start worrying about the results. And when we worry,it actually uses up attention and memory resources.
Professor Beilock and another researcher,Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution.Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored(得分)an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%.Next,the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated(不相關的)to the test.Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+,compared to a B- for those who did not.
"What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious,who'd done our writing intervention(干預),all of a sudden there was no relationship between test fear and performance. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these tests."
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam?Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
(1)What do the students start worrying about before an exam?
A.Whether they can pass the exams.
B.What other students do during the test.
C.Whether they have remembered the materials.
D.What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
(2)What is the solution developed by researchers?
A.Making the students focused on the test.
B.Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
C.Having the students write about their worries about the test.
D.Asking the students to direct the attention away from the test.
(3)According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test
A.became less nervous before the test
B.were better at controlling their feelings
C.did worse than those who wrote about their feelings
D.did better than those who wrote about their feelings
(4)We can infer from the last paragraph that
A.writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit
B.we can only write about our worries right before an exam
C.the best place to write about our worries is in the test room
D.it doesn't matter where we write about our worries before an exam組卷:19引用:5難度:0.7 -
3.The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora, which is 161km west of Cusco,it's an 18km walk to Capuliyoc Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina, where travellers camp for the night.Waking early, travellers then have to cross the Apurímac River and walk uphill to camp close to the ruins. Then, the next morning,it's another 2km walk up to the ruins,3,100 m above sea level. To get back?Well,it's the same way you came.
"I've had people in their 60s and 70s do it," said Juan Barrios,a guide from the Adventure Life company. "But some people come out thinking that because it's only 28km from the drop off they can do it in a day.Six or seven days for the hike is best."
It makes sense, then, that Choquequirao draws only about 30 people a day during the high season(June through August).Compare that to the 2,500 people who arrive each day at the famous Incan city of Machu Picchu.
But for those who make the journey, the rewards(回報)are great:beautiful mountain views at every turn, and the chance to explore the wonderful ruins nearly alone.
Believed to be created around the same time as Machu Picchu,in 1445,Choquequirao is actually larger than better-known Machu Picchu. But very little has been written about Peru's other lost city and researchers are still uncovering new parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively untouched.
But officials say that the building of the first cable car(纜車)to Choquequirao will shorten the several-day walk to a 15-minute cable car ride.As a result, the number of travellers that now make the journey each week could turn into 3,000 visitors per day.
Choquequirao is beautiful now because of how untouched it is.Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Díaz in 1710,the ruins still make you feel as though you're the first to find them. Will it be the same when more travellers flood in (大量涌入)?
(1)What does the first paragraph centre on?
A.How tall Choquequirao is.
B.How to get to Choquequirao easily.
C.What great views Choquequirao has.
D.How hard the trip to Choquequirao is.
(2)In what way is Choquequirao different from Machu Picchu?
A.Choquequirao is older.
B.Choquequirao is quieter.
C.Choquequirao is smaller.
D.Choquequirao is better known.
(3)How are the ruins of Choquequirao?
A.They're still being dug out.
B.They're in a generally poor condition.
C.They're being renewed at the moment.
D.They've been researched internationally.
(4)What does the author think of Choquequirao in the future?
A.It will be more attractive.
B.It will develop at a slow speed.
C.It won't necessarily take a turn for the better.
D.It won't be more popular than Machu Picchu.組卷:105難度:0.5 -
4.The past two years has been tough for so many people. There's been a mix of worry and annoyance due to COVID-19.And with the pandemic being still threatening, people are continuing to struggle and in need of a smile.
With this in mind,we wanted to share the story of Jaden Hayes, whose take on sadness and anxiety is totally refreshing.
When Jaden Hayes was only 4 years old,his dad passed away. Two years later his mom died in her sleep. "I tried and tried to get her awake---but I couldn't," the orphan(孤兒) explained in an interview. However,in his grief he realized how difficult it was for him to see others around him feeling sad.So he wanted to do something to make them smile. With the help of his aunt and guardian at the time,Barbara DiCola,he went and bought lots of little toys to hand out to passers-by in Savannah,Georgia, whose spirits needed to be raised.
All little Jaden Hayes wants in return is to make people smile.Unsurprisingly, his efforts have worked! "It's like absolute joy came out of this child, and the more people he made smile, the more this light shone," explained his aunt. While he readily admitted that he was still sad about his mother's death, the smile mission had given him a sense of purpose.
Now,a few years later,Jaden is still keeping up his good work. His Facebook page,Jaden's
Journey, describes how this young "smile maker" is still bringing joy to others.
His initial aim was to make 33,000 people smile through his kind deeds, but by spreading his story we're pretty sure he's managed to inspire many more smiles, and perhaps a few tears.

8.閱讀下面材料,根據其內容和所給段落開頭語續寫兩段,使之構成一篇完整的短文。
Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow.Bobby didn't wear boots;or rather,he didn't own any.The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold.
Bobby had been in his backyard for about an hour already.Try as he might,he could not come up with an idea for his mother's Christmas gift.He shook his head as he thought,"This is useless.Even if I do come up with an idea,I don't have any money for a gift."
Wiping tears from his eyes,Bobby started walking down to the street where the shops were.It wasn't easy being six without a father, especially when he needed a man to talk to.
Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window.Everything seemed so beautiful but so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby reluctantly turned to walk home when suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer(微光)of the setting sun's rays reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime(十分硬幣).
Never before has anyone felt as wealthy as Bobby did at that moment. As he held his newly-found treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.
He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him,Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother's Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his offering ten-cent.Then he put his hand on Bobby's shoulder, saying,"You just wait here and I'll see what I can do for you."
The sound of the door closing as the last customer left pulled Bobby back to reality. All alone in the shop,Bobby began to feel alone and afraid.
