          • 14.Examples of effective conservation of places matter to the world. They range from the 1960s Nubian campaign to safeguard Ancient Egyptian monuments from the waters of the Aswan Dam to the removal in 2018 of the Belize Barrier Reef from the List of World Heritage in Danger.Conservation is the core purpose of the World Heritage Convention and it may also be its biggest challenge.
The following example shows how successes at specific sites now serve as models for conservation and sustainable(可持續(xù)性)development.A year after Vienna was included on the World Heritage List in 2001,the World Heritage Committee (WHC) expressed concerns about the architectural solutions and height of four planned towers of the Wien-Mitte project. This development project, close to the Historic Centre of Vienna in the site's buffer zone, the one that lies between two or more other areas, affected the urban scale(規(guī)模) and visual effects in and around the property(地產(chǎn)).As a result of the Committee's concerns,Vienna changed its building codes and launched a new design competition for the Wien-Mitte project to work out architectural plans with reduced size in keeping with World Heritage protection.
The successful practice inspired the government of the city to invite over 600 experts and professionals from 55 countries to an international conference on World Heritage and contemporary architecture, held in Vienna in May 2005.The global discussion that followed, detailing an approach to managing conservation and development, was recorded in the UNESCO Recommendation in 2011.
The Recommendation put forwards an all-rounded and combined approach to balancing urban heritage conservation and economic development, arguing that active protection and management of urban heritage supports the goal of sustainable development.
The Recommendation supports the harmonious combination of contemporary involvement into the historic urban framework while holding on to values linked to history, memory and the environment.

(1)Why does the author mention the Belize Barrier Reef in Paragraph 1?

A.To explain the goal of the organization.
B.To encourage the public to protect the world.
C.To show the positive effect of conservation.
D.To remind people of the environmental problems.
(2)Why was WHC worried about the Wien-Mitte project?

A.It took up too much public land of the city.
B.It had a bad effect on the Historic Centre of Vienna.
C.Its original designs were not environmentally friendly.
D.Its architectural solutions couldn't meet safety standards.
(3)What did the global discussion focus on?

A.The ways to combine conservation and development.
B.The creation of the new UNESCO Recommendation.
C.The international urban management and development.
D.The styles of the contemporary architecture of Vienna.
(4)What is the authors purpose in writing the text?

A.To examine the challenges faced by global urban planners.
B.To introduce alternative ways of protecting the environment.
C.To stress the importance of the value of history and memory.
D.To promote active conservation and sustainable development.

          • 15.The Spotlight Effect Have you ever felt as if the entire world was watching while you made a mistake?Well, here's some good news:it's likely that no one even noticed.
               (1)
We have this experience not only when we make mistakes but also when we perform well.Every time we do something that is a little different from what we usually do,we may assume that everyone around us will notice. The spotlight effect might happen when we make a mistake in a game, have a bad hair day,or give a terrible answer in class.(2)
In these moments,it feels like everyone is watching.
The spotlight effect exists because we all get used to seeing things through our own eyes.Every person is the main character in his or her story, and the events of our lives seem to have great importance.(3)

The spotlight effect is a very common part of the human experience. However,in some cases,it can lead to extreme social anxiety and nervousness around other people.Everyone suffers some degree of social anxiety. We all care about what others think, and we all want to be liked. It's normal to wonder about what effect we have on other people.(4)
If someone is so nervous that they can't make good decisions, then it's time to take action and improve the situation.
Learning about the spotlight effect is important because it can help us reduce our anxiety.Next time you feel like everyone is staring at you, remind yourself that it's just your mind playing tricks on you.(5)
If you fill your mind with thoughts of your friends and family,it will help you be less self-conscious.

A.However, this can be a problem when the anxiety is too much to handle.
B.That's why fewer people notice the embarrassing circumstances they encounter.
C.Another good exercise is to make an effort to notice the people around you, rather than focusing on yourself.
D.The spotlight effect is a trick of the mind that makes us believe that people notice us more often than they really do.
E.What you can do at this moment is to ignore them.
F.We are so busy examining ourselves that we actually observe very little about everyone around us.
G.It can also appear when we score a big goal, ask someone on a date,or do a good deed.

          六、寫作

          • 18.    I was a shy 13-year-old boy that year, afraid to speak before people and poor at communicating with others. My parents were worried,so they introduced a part-time job in a restaurant to me during the summer vacation, hoping it would make a difference to me.Although I hated it and didn't believe it would bring any change to me,I had to accept it.The part-time job fell on Monday of each week.
On the first Monday,I simply dared not look at people in the restaurant. And when I was speaking with them,my face turned red and my voice was low.On my way back home,I felt so bad.But when I reached home,my bad feelings disappeared.I found my parents had brought home a pet cat, which I had expected to get for a long time. The cat was so lovely.
However, one Thursday,he secretly ran out and disappeared. We looked for him everywhere the whole day but found nothing. We lived in the city, close to a road.I guessed he would probably not be home again. And after three days of looking for the cat with no sign of him,I quite believed he wouldn't be home again. My parents told me, "A miracle (奇跡) may happen as long as you don't give up." However,I quite doubted it.
On the morning of the following Monday,I left for work 45 minutes earlier and started walking to the bus stop a block away. While waiting for the bus there,I thought about the work and felt upset. It wouldn't be helpful to me and it was tiring! How much I wanted to quit the job!And thinking of the cat,I felt even worse.
Since it was still early,I suddenly wanted to spare some time to look for the cat again though I had little hope.I told myself, "If I still fail to find him this time,I won't look for him again. "Then,I decided to walk to the next bus stop to look for him around.Minutes later, suddenly,a dirty and weak cat sitting by a tree caught my eye.
