          • 11.You've heard that plastic is polluting the ocean—between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes enter ocean ecosystems every year. But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference?Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does.He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.
At the beginning of the year, the artist built a piece called "Strawpocalypse," a pair of 10-foot-tall plastic waves, frozen mid-crash.Made of 168,000 plastic straws collected from several volunteer beach cleanups, the sculpture made its first appearance at the Estella Place shopping center in Ho Chi Minh City,Vietnam.
Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled.Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source(來源)of plastic pollution, but they've recently come under fire because most people don't need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled.Every straw that's part of Von Wong's artwork likely came from a drink that someone used for only a few minutes.Once the drink is gone, the straw will take centuries to disappear.
In a piece from 2018,Von Wong wanted to illustrate(說明)a specific statistic:Every 60 seconds,a truckload's worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled "Truckload of Plastic," Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they'd been dumped(傾倒) from a truck all at once.
Von Wong hopes that his work will also help pressure big companies to reduce their plastic footprint.

(1)What are Von Wong's artworks intended for?

A.Beautifying the city he lives in.
            B.Introducing eco-friendly products.
C.Drawing public attention to plastic waste.
            D.Reducing garbage on the beach.
(2)Why does the author discuss plastic straws in paragraph 3?

A.To show the difficulty of their recycling.
B.To explain why they are useful.
C.To voice his views on modern art.
D.To find a substitute for them.
(3)What effect would "Truckload of Plastic" have on viewers?

          • 12.The government's top Great Barrier Reef scientist says a third mass coral bleaching(珊瑚白化)event in five years is a clear signal that the marine wonder is "calling for urgent help on climate change".Corals can recover from mild bleaching, but severe bleaching can kill corals.
Prof Terry Hughes, director of the Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University, surveyed 1,036 reefs from a plane over nine days in late March.
The marine park authority also had an observer on the flights. The survey has released maps showing that serious levels of bleaching occurred in 2020 in all three sections of the reef northern, central and southern. Some 25% of the reefs were seriously bleached-meaning that more than 60% of the corals on each reef had bleached.
The Great Barrier Reel has experienced five mass bleaching events-1998.2002,2016,2017 and 2020 -all caused by rising ocean temperatures driven by global heating.Hughes said there probably would not be the same level of coral death in the north and central regions in 2020 as in previous years, but this was partly because previous bleaching outbreaks had kill off the less heat -tolerant species The 2020 bleaching was second only to 2016 for severity(嚴(yán)重性),Hughes said.
Dr.David Wachenfeld, chief scientist at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority told Guardian Australia, "My greatest fear is that people will lose hope for the reef.Without hope there's no action.People need to see these bleaching events. They are clear signals that the Great Barrier Reef is calling for urgent help and for us to do everything we can".
Measures to improve the ability of recovery of the reef include improving water quality, controlling outbreaks of coral-eating starfish, and research and development to improve the heat tolerance of corals. "However, climate change brings a new scale of impact unlike anything we have seen before. Thus, dealing with the climate problem is the basis for everything else to work, " Wachenfeld said.

C.The 2020 bleaching killed off the less heat tolerant species.

          • 14.Tasked with photographing one of the world's rarest big cats, you go deep into the jungle of Southeast Asia and set up a camera trap.Back at base camp, you look through the images it captures.identifying monkeys, otters and finally what you've been searching for:the mysterious clouded lcopard.
Now you can engage with all this without having to leave the comfort of your own home.A new mobile game Unseen Empire turns one of the largest-ever wildlife camera trap studies into a playable experience. It is based on an ongoing,decade-long camera trap study by Professor David Macdonald and his team at the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit at Oxford University. The game is divided into different levels, each level taking place in a different location around the world. As you progress through the game, you can update your camera equipment to capture better images and unlock new locations to explore.
Unseen Empire uses a significant number of real photographs from the study and allows players to identify species within this rapidly degrading environment.Players take on the role of a researcher in a real scientific study and the photographs can help them better understand wildlife conservation science. To understand the clouded leopard's habitat,6 million camera trap photographs captured in the study are used in the game. They are not only attractive but there's something just incredibly raw and real about capturing these animals' entirely candid (搶拍的) moments.
While the game is free and doesn't generate donations, the hope is that Unseen Empire can provide new ways for people to engage with endangered animals."If you don't have any encounter or experience with elements of nature, then what motivation can you have to take a personal interest in it?"says Macdonald.
"I would like to think that engagement with this game will lead to a feeling of value, which will affect how they think about nature,"says Macdonald."So,in that sense,we'd like to be part of a revolution on how people view the role of humanity, alongside the wider environment."

            A.To show love of photography.

          • 19.Keeping up seemed so important when I was a teenager.Back in 1973,if you weren't wearing Penn Loafers (樂福鞋) you'd just as soon go around in your bare feet. There was only one problem that year,I had bought Oxfords-but Penny Loafers were in.
"I need some money for Penny Loafers." I told my dad one afternoon at the place where he worked as a car mechanic.
Dad looked at me for a full minute before he answered, "Wear those shoes one more day.Look at every pair of shoes you see at school. If you can tell me that you are worse off than the other kids,I'll buy new shoes for you."
The next day,I did what Dad said.I saw many schoolmates wore torn shoes of the likes I'd never had to wear, and shoes with holes in them, but I had no intention of telling him the results.
When school was out,I rushed to the place where Dad worked. It was quiet.Only an occasional clank (叮當(dāng)聲) of metal could be heard as Dad worked under a car. Then dad's shoes came into my sight. They were old and black, the kind mechanics and service-station attendants wore.I saw the mended soles (鞋底) and the spliced laces (拼接的鞋帶) .
"You do what I told you today?"
               "Yes,sir."
"Well, what do you want to do?" He looked as though he might know what my answer would be.
"I still want the Penny Loafers." I forced myself not to look at his shoes.
Dad handed me ten dollars.I took the money and went to the store two blocks down the street.A rack (貨架) on a far wall appeared as if it had a million pairs of black Penny Loafers resting on it.On a rack next to it was a sign that reads "CLEARANCE 50% OFF".Below the sign sat several "young" versions of Dad's shoes.
            注意:
            1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為 150 詞左右;
