11.Amazing lost places around the world Kolmanskop
Once the richest town in Africa, today Kolmanskop is sinking into the Namibian desert. The discovery of diamonds here around 100 years ago caused this remote place to experience a boom (繁榮),and in no time at all,an entire town revealed itself out of the sand. Not only was there a hospital,a power plant and a theatre, but also an ice factory and a swimming pool—all in the middle of the desert!
The Aniva lighthouse
Built by the Japanese on a small island between Japan and Russia, the Aniva lighthouse and its island went to the Russians after the Second World War.Though dynamic (充滿活力的) once, the seven-storey building has lain abandoned for years.Where once noisy diesel (柴油) generators kept the machinery running, today there's only the sound of waves hitting the rocks.
Houtouwan
Houtouwan on Shengshan Island was once home to around 2,000 fishermen and their families.Today most of the people you meet in this Chinese village are tourists. The majority of the inhabitants (居民) left for the mainland in the early 1990s.Reasons for the near total abandonment include shortage of food delivery.
The Igloo Hotel
This resort has never seen a paying guest! The Igloo Hotel in Alaska,US was primarily meant to attract visitors from the nearby Denali National Park. However, the builder didn't observe official building regulations and also chose a location that was too remote,so the hotel was never completed. The half-finished building, however, continues to suffer wind and weather a half century later.

13. For many, the idea of commuting (通勤) daily to a place of work might sound outdated. In the UK,at least, the shape of the working week is changing, and a new hybrid approach is becoming commonplace. This new look seems unavoidable:new technology means tasks traditionally done in the office can be done at home. And there's the demand for a better work-life balance, too. All of this has been accelerated by the necessary changes brought on by the Covid pandemic.
One obvious change in the UK is that Friday has become the most popular day to work from home. One survey found it's when just 13% of workers go into the office. It means employees can save on commuting costs and the price of lunches.Generally, employers thought the shift to hybrid working and home working had increased productivity rather than decreased it.
Monday is also becoming a "work from home" day:a recent study of mobile phone activity in the UK suggested a typical week in the office now runs from Tuesday to Thursday. This means companies have to think differently about the workspace they provide. There are going to be fewer people in offices for the longer term.A shorter office week isn't great news for the city-centre shops, which depend on trade from workers. But suburban and small-town high street s are reporting an increase in footfall(客流量) as people work and shop locally.
There's also an emerging trend for a shorter working week. Some companies are experimenting with a four-day working week——but with the same full-time pay. They have tried to make work time more efficient by cutting out unnecessary meetings and having shorter breaks, for example. They claim this has made workers more productive. All this makes you wonder if the act of going to work and doing the nine-to-five will become a thing of the past.
(1)What is the driver for the changes mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.Covid pandemic.
B.More work.
C.New commuting approach.
D.Novel technologies.
(2)What does the underlined word"suburban" in the 3rd paragraph probably mean?
A.City-centre.
B.Downtown.
C.Out-of-town.
D.Metropolitan.
(3)What can we know about hybrid working?
A.It decreases productivity.
B.It helps companies cut staff.
C.It lowers employees' wage.
D.It promotes work-life balance.
(4)What is the best title for this passage?
A.Workers Tired of Workplaces.
B.Hybrid Working Trend in the UK.
C.Home Working Makes Bosses Unhappy.
D.Inefficient Nine-To-Five Working Mode.組卷:3引用:1難度:0.5 -
14.Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material.Sian Beilock,a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers.The students start worrying about the results. And when we worry,it actually uses up attention and memory resources.
Professor Beilock and another researcher,Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution.Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored(得分)an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%.Next,the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated(不相關的)to the test.Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+,compared to a B- for those who did not.
"What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious,who'd done our writing intervention(干預),all of a sudden there was no relationship between test fear and performance. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these tests."
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam?Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
(1)What do the students start worrying about before an exam?
A.Whether they can pass the exams.
B.What other students do during the test.
C.Whether they have remembered the materials.
D.What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
(2)What is the solution developed by researchers?
A.Making the students focused on the test.
B.Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
C.Having the students write about their worries about the test.
D.Asking the students to direct the attention away from the test.
(3)According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test
A.became less nervous before the test
B.were better at controlling their feelings
C.did worse than those who wrote about their feelings
D.did better than those who wrote about their feelings
(4)We can infer from the last paragraph that
A.writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit
B.we can only write about our worries right before an exam
C.the best place to write about our worries is in the test room
D.it doesn't matter where we write about our worries before an exam組卷:19引用:5難度:0.7
