          • 9.There is an old joke among pilots that says the ideal flight crew is a computer,a pilot and a dog.The computer's job is to fly the plane. The pilot is there to feed the dog.And the dog's job is to bite the pilot if he tries to touch the computer.
Handing complex tasks to computers is not new.But recent progress in machine learning,a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI),has enabled computers to handle many problems which were previously beyond jye.aim.The result has been an AI boom, with computers moving into everything from medical diagnosis and insurance to self-driving cars.
There is a problem, though.Machine learning works by giving computers the ability to train themselves, which adapts their programming to the task at hand.People struggle to understand exactly how those self-written programs do what they do.When algorithms(計算機程序)are doing small tasks, such as playing chess or recommending a film to watch, this "black box" problem can be safely ignored. When they are deciding who gets a loan,or how to drive a car through a crowded city,it is potentially harmful. And when things go wrong, then customers, regulators and the courts will want to know why.
For some people this is a reason to hold back AL France's digital-economy minister,Mounir Mahjoubi, has said that the government should not use any algorithm whose decisions cannot be explained. But that is an overreaction. The difficulties caused by clever computers are not unheard- of.Society already has plenty of experience dealing with problematic black boxes;the most common are called human beings, who can't even figure out what's going on in a brajye.ai.In response to the weakness in humans, society has evolved a series of workable coping mechanisms, called laws, rules and regulations. Many of these can be applied to machines as well.
Humans have worked with computers on complex tasks for decades. One lesson from such applications is that, wherever possible, people should supervise(監督)the machjye.aies.In that joke, pilots are vital in case something happens that is beyond the scope of artificial intelligence. As computers spread, companies and governments should ensure the first line of defence is a real person who can overrule the algorithms if necessary.

(1)Why is the joke mentioned in Paragraph 1?

            A.To make people laugh.
            B.To foresee future aeroplane industry.
C.To introduce the latest model of aeroplanes.
D.To raise people's awareness of computers performing complex tasks.
(2)What has caused the increasing application of computers in various fields?

            A.The shortage of labor force.
            B.The rise of artificial intelligence.
            C.The encouragement of government.
            D.The development of medical economy.
(3)Why are some people opposed to AI?

            A.Black boxes always go wrong.
            B.Laws forbid machine learning.
C.They don't understand how AI works.
D.Computers are trying to replace human beings.

          • 11.In 2000,when I was around seven years old,my parents, sister, brother, and I were coming back from a T-ball game. There,in our driveway,we spotted two adult geese and a small gosling. The adults were startled by our return and flew away, but their baby was still too young to fly.We are no strangers to wildlife,so we avoided physical contact with the small gosling out of fear that it would keep us in its mind and be lost to its family forever.Hours passed, and night fell. The tiny little thing was wandering around our yard, unaware of what could happen.
And then another morning. And still another. Each morning,we would try to drive the goose over to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard.He wouldn't go to them, though, and they wouldn't come close enough to collect him.My sister Joanna decided to call the little guy Peeper, because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping noise, nonstop.
Almost a year passed. My family filled our days with feathery hugs and my dad would throw Peeper up into the air so he could fly a circle around the house.
One evening,my uncle came, and my dad wanted to show him Peeper's circle. He threw him up in the air,but this time,Peeper just flew off.Everyone was very, very sad.We looked for him for days, calling his name, but he didn't come back.Twenty years passed, and Peeper became a fond memory for my family.
Geese are very loyal, never forgetting their first home.Even so,it came as a total shock to me when,in 2020,an aging adult goose appeared at my home.At first,I assumed it was just another goose. After two weeks of the goose coming back repeatedly,it became clear to me that this wasn't a random goose. He did all of the same things Peeper used to and responded to the name Peeper. My old best friend returned,20 years later.
People desire connection with the natural world.Through Peeper,I have learned so much about myself and about the nature of love.

          • 12.We're not suggesting that you should reach a permanent state called "happiness "and remain there. But there are many ways to keep away from anxiety, anger, frustration and sadness. Here are some ideas to get you started.Choose the ones that work for you.
Practice mindfulness.Focus on the present.Instead of worrying about what you should do tomorrow while you're having dinner with your family, focus on the here and now-the food, your families, the conversation.
Sing along.Studies find music activates parts of the brain that produce happiness. In one study older adults who listened to their choice of music during eye surgery had significantly lower heart rates and blood pressure than those who had silent surgery.
Go to sleep. We have become a nation of sleep-deprived citizens.Taking a daily nap or getting into bed at 8 p.m.at night with a good book and turning the light out an hour later can do more for your mood than any number of bubble baths or massages.
Make a list. There's nothing like writing down your tasks to help you organize your thoughts and calm your anxiety.Checking off each item provides a great sense of fulfillment.
Visit a quiet place.Libraries, museums, gardens, and places of worship(禮拜場所)provide islands of peace and calm in today's world.Find a quiet place near your house and make it your secret getaway.
Volunteer.Helping others enables you to put your own problems into perspective(客觀判斷力)and also provides social interaction. While happy people are more likely to help others, helping others increases your happiness. One study found that volunteer work enhanced all four aspects of well-being:happiness,life satisfaction,self-esteem and sense of control over life.

(1)According to the passage, which of the following ways can keep you away from bad moods?
