12. Music first or language? If you think about it,the spoken word has a sort of musicality to it.The way we pronounce, our voice changes, our word choices, and even the volume and speed at which we speak all have a musical effect.
In the scholarly paper Music and Early Language Acquisition (獲得),researchers attempted to prove that in order to speak, people must first have an understanding of music. The authors argue that spoken language should be described as "a special type of music".
By these standards, music is not a pointless part of life at all;it is necessary to all communication between humans. The researchers go on to point out that our brains process language musically,so there is much to be said of studying music alongside language, and at a very young age.
According to professor of theory and music composition Anthony Brandt, children as young as newborns have a basic understanding of music. In an interview with Medical News Today,Brandt said that the sounds of language, not the meaning of it,are what infants (嬰兒) first learn. It is later on that they are able to associate those sounds with what they mean.Brandt, who co-authored the research paper mentioned above, said that newborns can break down parts of sound like tone and rhythm (節(jié)奏).Therefore, exposure to music trains babies' brains for language comprehension and the art of speaking.
Brandt and his co-authors also found that infants cannot really tell what their native language is when compared to other languages, and the same is true with music.Once a baby has reached that one-year mark,he or she will start to distinguish the speech and music that are most closely associated with their own family and society. "This is why exposing infants to several languages and types of music is so important," Brandt said, "The more sounds they hear, the wider their base of understanding of sounds, language and music as they grow older."
(1)What phenomenon is described about spoken language in the first paragraph?
A.It is used to compose popular songs.
B.It is convenient for daily interactions.
C.It differs greatly from written language.
D.It has something in common with music.
(2)Which of the following is Brandt's idea?
A.Our brains process language in a musical way.
B.Newborns have no basic understanding of music.
C.Music is unnecessary for human communication.
D.It is hard for babies to breakdown parts of sound.
(3)What may Brandt suggest people do?
A.Play games with one-year old babies.
B.Expose infants to languages and music.
C.Tell newborns what their mother tongue is.
D.Ask babies to distinguish speech and music.
(4)Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Music Is a Universal Language
B.The Development of Spoken Language
C.Music Helps Language Learning

13.Two thirds of the ice in the glaciers(冰川) of the Alps is doomed! These glaciers will melt by the end of the century as global temperatures rise, according to a recent study.
Scientists claim that half the ice held in some 4,000 Alpine glaciers will disappear by 2050 due to global warming through the effect of past emissions. After that, even if carbon emissions drop to zero,two-thirds of the ice will still have melted by 2100.If emissions continue to rise at the current rate, the ice tongues will have all but disappeared from Alpine valleys by the end of the century. The most pessimistic prediction tells us that the Alps will be mostly ice-free by 2100.Only isolated ice patches would remain at high altitudes, representing five per cent,at most,of the ice volume seen today.
The researchers warn that the loss of these glaciers will mean much less water is available for farming and hydroelectricity, especially during droughts. It would also affect nature and tourism.
In February,a study found that a third of the huge ice fields in Asia's towering mountain chains were also under threat for the same reasons. This will lead to serious consequences for almost two billion people who live downstream.Glaciers along the Hindu Kush and Himalayan range are at higher, colder altitudes. If global carbon emissions are not cut,however,two-thirds of their ice could be gone by 2100.
The latest research combined computer models with real-world data to forecast the fate of the glaciers. It used 2017 as its starting point.Unlike previous work, these models included how the glaciers move down the mountains.Applying this approach to other glaciated mountain chains could improve ice loss forecasts there.
Cutting the emissions from fossil-fuel burning, deforestation and other polluting activities is the biggest factor in minimizing the melting of the ice.The future of these glaciers is indeed at risk, but there is still a possibility of limiting their disappearance.
(1)What does the underlined word "doomed"mean in paragraph 1?
A.Polluted.
B.Discovered.
C.Endangered.
D.Abandoned.
(2)What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A.Emissions have much to do with the ice melting.
B.The Alps is expected to lose all its ice by 2100.
C.Ice loss will be avoided with emissions prevented.
D.Large ice pieces will just exist at the mountain top.
(3)Why are the Asia's ice fields mentioned in paragraph 4?
A.To explain how glacier melting came about.
B.To imply pollution is a worldwide problem.
C.To show what consequences ice melting will cause.
D.To indicate the Alps is not alone to face ice melting.
(4)What is the writer' s attitude towards the future of glaciers?
A.Objective.
B.Optimistic.
C.Critical.
D.Doubtful.組卷:9引用:7難度:0.6 -
14. Eating out seems to have been as popular 5,000 years ago as it is today, with archaeologists (考古學(xué)家) in Iraq uncovering an ancient tavern dating back to 2,700 BC.Researchers working in the ancient city of Lagash discovered that the pub, hidden just 19 inches below the surface, was split into an open-air dining area and a room containing benches,an oven, ancient food remains and even a 5,000-year-old "fridge".
They initially found themselves in the open courtyard space,an area that was difficult to dig, being "open and exposed to the outdoors",according to Reed Goodman,an archaeologist from the University of Pennsylvania. After returning to the mysterious courtyard a few months later, field director Sara Pizzimenti from the University of Pisa, widened the trench (溝渠) instead of digging straight down vertically in one spot.
The team then discovered the industrial-sized oven,an ancient "fridge" to keep food cool, and dozens of bowls, many containing fish remains, revealing the purpose of the courtyard to be an outdoor dining area.
Previous digs focused on religious architecture and understanding the elites (上層人士),but Holly Pittman, director of the Lagash Archaeological Project and curator of the Penn Museums Near East section, concentrated on non-elite areas during these latest digs to make people have a broader understanding of ancient cities. "Uncovering the tavern supports the perspective of Pittman and her team that society was not organized into just elites and enslaved people — the previous common view — but included an ancient middle class," Goodman said.
The discovery provides insight into how people lived in this ancient cjye.aiy-state.It shows that even thousands of years ago, people enjoyed gathering in public places to socialize and enjoy food and drink.

(3)What is special about the latest digging project?
A.It reveals the earliest settlers in Lagash.
B.It shows the social activities of the elites.
C.It reflects the life of the ancient non-elite class.
D.It focuses on studying religious architecture.
(4)What is the main purpose of the text?

An anxious call came into Jimmy Gilleece's bar.A newly married woman, who had spent the afternoon at the bar, couldn't find her wallet. She didn't care about her ID,credit cards,or ﹩150 in cash-but her wedding ring was inside.
Gilleece didn't like the idea that a theft could have occurred at his place. So he set out to look for the wallet. He spent hours looking through security camera videos, watching the woman's every step in the bar until she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her ride arrived.Within minutes,a young man approached the bench, slipped something into his pocket, and walked off.Gilleece posted a clip(片斷) on the bar's website. "I didn't want to punish him." he said. "I just asked if anybody knew who the guy was."
Within hours,Gilleece got a text from 17-year-old Prather, who admitted having taken the wallet and told Gilleece he'd done it because he hadn't eaten in two days.He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake (假的),so he took the money and threw the wallet off the dock (碼頭) into the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich.
Gilleece, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the dock, where they got talking and Prather revealed that he wasn't getting along with his family and had been living in the woods for a week.Judging from Prather's small body and red cheeks,Gilleece saw him for what he was:more of a kid than a criminal.
But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring,Prather could be facing charges. "He would be going to big boy prison.I have to help him somehow," Gilleece thought.
Paragraph 1:
Gilleece paid two divers to search the waters where Prather had thrown the wallet._________
