          • 1.At one time, the Iroquois Indians lived along the lakes and rivers of the northern part of New York. The five tribes(部落)—the Mohawk,Oneida,Onondaga,Cayuga, and Seneca—fought with each other for years.
In the late 1500s,a wise Iroquois man named Dekanawida had a dream. In his dream,he saw the end of the Indian wars.An Onondaga chief named Hiawatha agreed to help Dekanawida bring peace to the area.Hiawatha traveled from tribe to tribe, trying to persuade the tribal leaders to unite in peace. The leaders realized that if they stopped fighting, they could become a powerful force in the Northeast area.
The leaders of the five tribes set up a league, called the Iroquois League, which brought all five tribes together. They set up a kind of democratic(民主的) government in which each tribe had an equal voice.A Great Council was formed.Forty-nine chiefs from every tribe were appointed to the Council. The members were all men,but they were chosen by the elder women of the tribes. The Council worked together to solve big issues for the league, while each tribe remained self-governing.
In 1722,the Iroquois League increased from five to six tribes when the Tuscarora tribe joined jye.aim.The Iroquois League controlled the fur trade in the area. They controlled land from Canada to Kentucky. The Iroquois League remained powerful for over 200 years.
Then during the War of Independence, most of the Iroquois League sided with the British. After the Americans defeated the British, many Iroquois villages were destroyed. The Iroquois were forced to move and live on reservations(印第安人居留地).This caused the Iroquois League to become less powerful.
History shows that the writers of the United States Constitution used some of the same ideas as the Iroquois League. One section of the Iroquois Constitution is entitled "Rights of the People" and might be compared to the "Bill of Rights".The Iroquois League's constitution is often called America's first democracy.

          • 2.The Teenage Brain Parents, teachers, and others who deal closely with teenagers know how difficult the adolescent years can be.This was thought to be due to the "foolishness of youth." Now,brain-imaging technology allows scientists to study the physical development of the brain in more details than ever before.Their discoveries have led a new theory of why teens act this way.
Recently, scientists have discovered that though our brains are almost at their full size by the age of six, they are far from fully developed.Only during adolescence do our brains truly "grow up." During this time, they go through great changes, like a computer system being upgraded. This "upgrade" was once thought to be finished by about age 12.Now scientists have found that our brains continue to change until age 25.Such changes make us better at balancing impulses with following rules. But a still-developing brain does this clumsily. The result, scientists believe,is the unpredictable behavior seen in teenagers.
The studies show that teens are more likely to take risks.Luckily, the news isn't all bad.As brain scientist B.J.Casey points out,the teen brain inspires such behavior in order to help teens prepare for adult life.
One way the brain does this is by changing the way teens measure risk and reward (回報(bào)).
Researchers have found that when teens think about rewards, their brains release more of the chemicals that create pleasure.Researchers believe this makes the rewards seem more important than the risks, and makes teens feel the excitement of new experience.
Research into the structure of the teen brain have also found that it makes social connection seem especially rewarding. As such, teens have a strong need to meet new people.Because it is still developing,a teen brain can change to deal with new situations. So it connects social rewards with even more pleasure. In this way,the brain encourages teens to have a wide circle of friends, which is believed to make them more successful in life.
Unluckily, this need for greater rewards can sometimes lead teens to make bad decisions. However,it also means that teens are more likely, and less afraid,to try new things or to be independent. And in the long run,the impulses of the teen brain are what help teens leave their parents' care and live their own life successfully.

(1)What can We know about our brains from paragraph 2?

A.They're far from being their full size.
B.They have finishes upgrading by about age 12
C.A teen brain can cause unexpected behaviors.
D.A ten brain is better than an adult brain at following role.
(2)What leads teens to meet new people?

            A.The fear of being alone.
            B.The need to control others.
C.The desire to leave home sooner.
            D.The excitement of new experiences.
            (3)The author probably agrees that
            .
A.parents' care helps enlarge teens friend circle
B.teens' extreme behaviors can benefit their adult life
C.the way the teen brain works makes risks less exciting
D.teens are less delighted than adults when getting prizes
(4)The author's purpose in writing the passage is to
            .
A.describe how the teen brain grow up
B.compare teen brains with adult brains
            C.introduce the brain imaging technology

          • 4.You may have heard adults say they are uncomfortable in the morning without a cup of coffee. One reason they may feel that way is that coffee contains caffeine(咖啡因),Caffeine appears naturally in coffee, tea, and cocoa beans, which are used to make chocolate. But now food makers are adding it to many products, from potato chips to water.
The US government is especially worried about the problem. That's why the Food and Drug Administration(FDA)is studying the health effects of caffeine on young people.Studies show that too much caffeine can make people nervous and unable to sleep. What's more, caffeine is habit-forming.Those who consume it regularly and stop suddenly may experience headaches and feel tired.
One of the biggest concerns is the large amount of caffeine added to so-called energy drinks, like Red Bull.A 12-ounce can of cola has about 35 milligrams of caffeine.A similar serving of Red Bull contains more than three times that amount.
The Institute of Medicine is also working on caffeine-safety measures."Teenagers should not drink beverages that contain caffeine. They should be aware of caffeine's effects on health and on how the brain works.Take, for example, teenagers who consume caffeine to stay awake and study for a test. They will remember less of what they just studied,"said Stallings,a member of the institute.
Companies that make products with added caffeine claim they do not advertise them to kids. However, there is no law to stop children from buying them.So the FDA needs to set limits on caffeine, especially in energy drinks. As for added caffeine in foods, the government should just say no.If not,the amount of caffeine should be printed on food labels to remind consumers. The government must do that.
Doctors say kids should avoid caffeine. If you need extra energy, try these natural boosters:eat right,exercise.jye.ai get plenty of sleep.

The National Art Gallery was located at the heart of the city. There was no entrance charge and the architecture was both impressive and unique. There were many types of paintings on display based on the painters' country of origin, which were grouped into Asian,Aboriginal(native Australian painters)and Caucasian(高加索人).I estimated at least a thousand paintings on display. The painters ranged from the most experienced to the amateur ones.(2)
The quality and the imagination of the painters despite being young, were breathtaking.
               (3)

Since it was a public holiday, the gallery was crowded with students, parents and their children. (4)
The price of paintings almost made me faint. They ranged from AUS ﹩1,500 to a few million Australian dollars! It was such a huge display of paintings that I was sure the government must have paid big sums of money to purchase these works of art.
               (5)
Now I left Australia but the memory of that day is still kept in my heart. It is really an attraction worth visiting.

Today was Community Service Day at school.Maya's class was going to make cards for the seniors living in a nursing home.It was also the first day Maya would be wearing her leg brace (腿支架) to school, which was designed to help her walk more steadily and smoothly.
It was a cold autumn morning,Maya looked down, feeling embarrassed. To make it lovelier, she had delicately decorated the brace with pretty butterfly patterns.Still, she was unsure about others' reaction. All morning at school, kids kept glancing at her brace. To her relief, they didn't say anything.
In the classroom,Maya was drawing little green buds (芽) and pretty flowers when her friend Samir came over and sat by her.She felt his eyes fixed on her brace and heard him asking, "What's that for?" Not knowing what to say,Maya pretended she didn't hear him. After a few seconds of awkwardness, she glanced back at him,and found that he looked a little sad.
After lunch, the class set off.The nursing home was on a small hill and all of them walked there happily along the path.Maya found that the brace did make it easier for her to walk up.
Maya and Samir were paired up with a lady who was 83 years old. There at the end of the hall in a wheelchair, with a big smile on her face, sat the lady, wearing a pink coat, with red lipstick and beautiful earrings. She looked bright and full of life.Moving flexibly and fast towards Maya and Samir, she greeted first. "I'm Joan, " she said cheerfully, "Glad to meet you. "
Maya and Samir handed her the cards they made.Joan looked at Samir's card carefully and spoke with admiration, "You've written a poem! That's so artistic!" Samir's face reddened with shyness. Then Joan turned to Maya's picture. "The first flowers of spring!" she cried in delight. "You really have a gift for using colour!" she said.Clearly,Joan's praise added great power into Maya.
