1.For months now,our routines have been interrupted and we've been forced to adapt.Reportedly, one major consequence is a state of mental tiredness. It feels as if we're all in a state of constant distraction.
"It felt like I had a mental block preventing me from focusing on the page," says Sophie Vershbow, who recognized the mood early in the pandemic (流行病) when her tweet about "not being able to concentrate enough to read a book" was liked more than 2,000 times.
For many people, especially working parents, the sudden switch to home working has meant a conflict between work and life. It's tricky to focus on a document as your kids wrestle for the TV remote control. But even when work is finished for the day and the kids are in bed,it's hard to find any focus to escape into a novel or box-set.
A psychological theory called Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) might help explain why living in the age of COVID-19 may have turned our minds to soup.Put simply,CLT characterizes our minds as information processing systems. When we're working on a problem, especially an unfamiliar one,we depend on our "working memory",which is very limited both in its capacity and the length of time it holds information. The less familiar you are with a task, the more you depend on your working memory to help deal with the relevant information;in contrast, when you're an expert, most of what you need to know is stored in long-term memory and you can complete the task automatically.
So COVID-19 has robbed you of the ability to do things on auto.Take a work meeting for example, before, you would just have turned up and joined in the discussion, but now if you're working remotely you have to fire up your video-conferencing software, worry about your Wi-Fi and so on.The same applies to domestic challenges too, like ordering your groceries online instead of shopping in person. These adaptations force you out of auto-pilot and draw on your limited working memory capacity.

2.A new study, published this week in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science, reveals that non-human animals' tears are not so different from our own.The chemical similarities are so great,in fact, that the composition of other species' tears-and how they're adapted to their environments-may provide insights into better treatments for human eye disease.
Previously, scientists had studied closely only the tears of a handful of mammals, including humans, dogs, horses, camels, and monkeys. In the new study,Brazilian veterinarians analyzed the tears of reptiles and birds for the first time ,focusing on seven species.
Tears, which are released from tear tubes, form a film over the eye that's composed of three ingredients:mucus, water, and oil.The mucus coats the eyes surface and helps to attach the film to the eye,the water is a natural salty solution containing crucial proteins and minerals, and the oil prevents the eye from drying out.
Humans are the only known species to produce emotional tears;the expression "crocodile tears," which refers to a person's phony display of emotion, comes from the mysterious tendency of crocodiles to release tears as they eat.
But tears play key roles beyond weeping, notes Lionel Sebbag at Iowa State University, who was not involved in the new research. They help with vision by lubricating(潤滑)and clearing the eye. They also protect the eye against infection and provide nutrition to the cornea (角膜),the eye's clear outer layer, which lacks blood tubes,he says.
Learning how reptiles and birds' use tears may also inspire new medications for conditions such as dry eye, which occurs when tear tubes don't produce enough oil.The disease, common in cats, dogs, and people, can sometimes lead to blindness.
(1)What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The source of tears.
B.The composition of tears.
C.The classification of tears.
D.The definition of tears.
(2)What does the underlined word "phony" in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Tricky.
B.Regretful.
C.Cold.
D.False.
(3)Which statement does Lionel Sebbag agree with?
A.Weeping contributes to eye disease.
B.The cornea has rich blood tubes.
C.Tears oil and clear the eyes.
D.More tears mean better vision.
(4)What might be the best title for the text?
A.Tears,a barrier to eyes
B.A better treatment for eye disease
C.Non-human tears promise new cures
D.Other species' tears are similar to humans'組卷:9引用:1難度:0.5 -

4.The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora, which is 161km west of Cusco,it's an 18km walk to Capuliyoc Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina, where travellers camp for the night.Waking early, travellers then have to cross the Apurímac River and walk uphill to camp close to the ruins. Then, the next morning,it's another 2km walk up to the ruins,3,100 m above sea level. To get back?Well,it's the same way you came.
"I've had people in their 60s and 70s do it," said Juan Barrios,a guide from the Adventure Life company. "But some people come out thinking that because it's only 28km from the drop off they can do it in a day.Six or seven days for the hike is best."
It makes sense, then, that Choquequirao draws only about 30 people a day during the high season(June through August).Compare that to the 2,500 people who arrive each day at the famous Incan city of Machu Picchu.
But for those who make the journey, the rewards(回報)are great:beautiful mountain views at every turn, and the chance to explore the wonderful ruins nearly alone.
Believed to be created around the same time as Machu Picchu,in 1445,Choquequirao is actually larger than better-known Machu Picchu. But very little has been written about Peru's other lost city and researchers are still uncovering new parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively untouched.
But officials say that the building of the first cable car(纜車)to Choquequirao will shorten the several-day walk to a 15-minute cable car ride.As a result, the number of travellers that now make the journey each week could turn into 3,000 visitors per day.
Choquequirao is beautiful now because of how untouched it is.Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Díaz in 1710,the ruins still make you feel as though you're the first to find them. Will it be the same when more travellers flood in (大量涌入)?
(1)What does the first paragraph centre on?
A.How tall Choquequirao is.
B.How to get to Choquequirao easily.
C.What great views Choquequirao has.
D.How hard the trip to Choquequirao is.
(2)In what way is Choquequirao different from Machu Picchu?
A.Choquequirao is older.
B.Choquequirao is quieter.
C.Choquequirao is smaller.
D.Choquequirao is better known.
(3)How are the ruins of Choquequirao?
A.They're still being dug out.
B.They're in a generally poor condition.
C.They're being renewed at the moment.
D.They've been researched internationally.
(4)What does the author think of Choquequirao in the future?
A.It will be more attractive.
