          • 11.If you have a smartphone, you probably use its front-facing camera for selfies (自拍) and the occasional video call. You might use your next smartphone's front camera for the same thing, but there's a chance that the camera won't completely turn off once you're done with it.
This week, chipmaker Qualcomm revealed its latest Snapdragon processor (處理器),which will power many of the high-end Android smartphones that you'll see in stores in 2022,including models from Motorola,Sony and OnePlus. And a new feature built into that chip could allow smartphone makers to keep those front-facing cameras on all the time in a sort of low-power mode, waiting and watching for a face to appear in front of it.
The idea of a camera that stays on as long as your phone does seems deeply unsettling, even in an age where people are convinced that smartphones are already overheard(偷聽)on our conversations. So why is a company responsible for building the brains of our smartphones trying to make "always-on" cameras a common feature?
In time,a phone using this new chip could actually unlock itself when it sees your face, and automatically lock itself again when you're not looking at it anymjye.aie.Or,if it sees someone else's face next to yours, the phone could automatically hide notifications (通知) so no one else can see what your incoming emails or Slack messages are about. The benefit of a phone is that it knows to act differently when you're not looking back.
As it turns out,the Qualcomm tech that could make such features possible is conceptually pretty basic. "What's happening here is to find out:is there a face,or is there not a face," Heape told me. "There is not a photograph taken. There is no video being recorded." He also said that none of camera data leaves the chip when it's being analyzed (分析) for faces.

(1)Why does the author mention "selfies" and "video call" in paragraph 1?

            A.To advertise a product.
            B.To draw a conclusion.
            C.To make a comparison.
            D.To lead to the topic.
(2)What is special about the latest Snapdragon processor?

            A.It ensures a longer stay-on time.
            B.It prevents users being overheard.
C.It is fit for all Android smartphones.
D.It keeps the front-facing cameras always on.
(3)What may be people's attitude to the new feature of the new smartphones?

            A.Favorable.
            B.Worried.
            C.Positive.
            D.Critical.
(4)What could be inferred from Heape's words?

A.Smartphones with the new chip are safe to use.
B.Smartphones with the new chip will be popular.
C.Face analyzing data are kept through the Internet.
D.Private needs are considered to make the new features.

          • 13.In fifth grade,on a merry New York City day,my classmates spread across our raggedy classroom carpet. Our teacher had us practicing holiday songs for the upcoming winter show, and with holiday seasonal passion we sang. When we came to one of the Hanukkah (a Jewish festival)songs,a few classmates and I got up and started dancing. We flew around the classroom laughing, our movements becoming irregular as the song progressed. Then one boy stood up and said something along the lines of,"Stop! You're making fun of Jewish people!"
Our student-teacher stopped the song, the boy looked at us angrily as the student-teacher began to lecture,us on our behavior. How we were being disrespectful to the boy's culture-how the dancing was wrong.I was surprised at the outburst and,as a Jewish person myself, did not understand why the boy was offended,or why I was in trouble.I was embarrassed and made to feel disrespected my own culture.
At the beginning of middle school, with the Hanukkah song incident still fresh in my mind,I began to interact more with my Jewish heritage(血統).I started going to Hebrew school.I carefully listened to prayers and committed them to memory. The legitimacy(正統)of my Jewish heritage was questioned by my peers, especially around the Jewish holidays. They would ask if I was "really Jewish," as if there was a standard set of requirements I needed to meet.I didn't have my Bat Mitzvah(猶太成人禮),so that meant I couldn't be truly Jewish.jye.ai said.I asked myself if the accusations were true.It felt like I need to prove my Jewish-ness in some way.I began looking for ways to connect with and represent my Judaism.
When I walked into a store in December.I noticed the abundance of Christmas items, and lack of Hanukkah pieces.Maybe there would be a menorah(燭臺)in storefronts,or a few dreidels(陀螺)and chocolate gold coins,if I was lucky.Instead of feeling left out or ignored.I started to make a game out of it.In high school,I would walk the streets of the city and peer into store windows, marking down all the Hanukkah related things I discovered.

(1)Why did the class sing the songs according to paragraph l?

A.To prepare for the coming performance.
B.To make the angry boy happy.
C.To celebrate a traditional Jewish festival.
D.To respond to the happy dancers.
(2)What did the author experience during her middle school?

            A.racial discrimination.
            B.identity question.
            C.culture attack.
            D.criminal charges.
(3)How did the author do to prove she's a true Jew?

A.She opened a store to sell Hanukkah items.
B.She searched for the things related to her own culture.
C.She advocated her own culture and made it known to more.
D.She requested to have a bat mitzvah in front of her classmates.
(4)Which of the following can best describe the author?

            A.optimistic and considerate
            B.sensitive and ambitious
            C.intelligent and delicate
            D.conventional and practical

          • 14.    A good vegan milk (純素奶) needs to look like milk and taste like milk, whether it contains fat or not.Vegan milk is only one example in the growing types of plant-based alternatives (替代品) to animal products, such as meat, cheese, eggs and fish.Burger King and McDonald's sell vegan pies.Last year the world's largest producer of canned tuna,Thai Union, began to sell a plant-based product.Growing sales show the growing taste for this type of food, which means alternative proteins have come a long way since 1980s.
Producing techniques have been improved, resulting in better products and lower prices of them, which meet the needs of a growing number of people. Some vegetarians say no to meat, but yes to fish. Some people are trying to cut fat for health reasons.Fitness lovers want to develop muscular mass and strength without building up fat.Concerns about animal rights and greenhouse gas from raising livestock (家畜) are driving the environmentalists to limit their intake of animal-based proteins. As is reported, producing a gram of beef gives off 25 times the amount of greenhouse gas as producing a gram of tofu.
However,plant-based proteins are a tough sell in giant markets like India, where diets are already plant-rich,or Nigeria, where meat-eating is a sign of being rich. That limits their global popularity. What's more, animal products, including milk and meat, are better for children's bone development, though lab-grown meat and dairy are becoming more nutritious.
All this suggests that alternative proteins have far to go to replace the animal kind.Plant-based foods may no longer be only a side dish in diets, but their makers' place as the main dish is another matter.

(1)Why does the author mention vegan milk in the first paragraph?

            A.To encourage a healthy diet.
            B.To show people's growing taste.
C.To stress the importance of milk.
D.To introduce the topic of the passage.
(2)What's the main idea of Paragraph 2?

A.Ways to meet the needs of people.
            B.Benefits of animal-based products.
            C.Results of improved producing techniques.
            D.Reasons for choosing plant-based products.
(3)Why are plant-based products unpopular in India?

A.Indian Diets are rich in plant.
            B.Eating meat means being rich.
C.Plant-based products are produced in labs.
D.Plant-based products are bad for children.
            (4)What's the author's attitude towards plant-based proteins?

            A.Supportive.
            B.Doubtful.
            C.Objective.
            D.Unclear.

          • 18.NEVER STOP WALKING When Justin was 7,he suffered from a disease that led to problems with the development of his back.Over the years, the little boy had gone through a total of five corrective surgeries.Justin could no longer walk and was limited to a wheelchair. But this did not stop him from living a normal life thanks to his mother' S love and others' help.
After entering high school,Justin got interested in playing the trumpet (小號) and joined the school's band.He served as one of the band's trumpeters and developed a strong friendship with his partner Tom.As Thanksgiving Day approached, the band intended to perform in the Thanksgiving Day Parade and every member had the chance to join in,including Justin. However, there was one obvious problem.Justin could not control his wheelchair and play the trumpet at the same time. The band director put forward an idea of one student pushing Justin during his marches.Tom immediately volunteered even though it meant he had to give up the opportunity to play his own instrument during the parade."I do it just to make sure Justin knows that he always has a place in the band, and he always will," Tom said to their director secretly. From then on,the two practiced together, one playing the instrument and the other pushing the wheelchair with the rhythm of the music.
To help Justin,Tom sacrificed (犧牲) far beyond expectation.Apart from losing the chance to perform,he needed to spare more time to take care of Justin and even missed his football training several times. All of these were seen by Justin and the burden of guilt weighed heavily on his mind."I can't meet my own needs at the sacrifice of Tom's chance. It is time to find a solution." Justin thought to himself as his mother pushed him on the way home. His mother lowered her head and said,"Justin, play me your new tune." Justin took out his trumpet and was about to play when an excellent idea came to him.
