          • 12.    You've heard that plastic is polluting the oceans — between 4.8 and 12.7 million tons enter ocean ecosystems every year. But does one plastic straw (吸管) or cup really make a difference?Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does.He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.
At the beginning of the year, the artist built a piece called "Strawpocalypse," a pair of 10-foot-tall plastic waves, frozen mid-crash.Made of 168,000 plastic straws collected from several volunteer beach cleanups, the sculpture made its first appearance at the Estella Place shopping center in Ho Chi Minh City,Vietnam.
Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled.Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source of plastic pollution, but they've recently come under fire because most people don't need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled.Every straw that's part of Von Wong's artwork likely came from a drink that someone used for only a few minutes.Once the drink is gone, the straw will take centuries to disappear.
In a piece from 2018,Von Wong wanted to illustrate a specific statistic:Every 60 seconds,a truckload's worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled "Truckload of Plastic," Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they'd been dumped (傾倒) from a truck all at once.
Von Wong hopes that his work will also help pressure big companies to reduce their plastic footprint.

(1)What are Von Wong's artworks intended for?

A.Beautifying the city he lives in.
            B.Introducing eco-friendly products.

B.To explain why they are useful.
C.To voice his views on modern art.

          • 14.More than 11,000 scientists are warning that the Earth is facing a climate emergency. They represent several fields of study and come from 150 countries around the world. They approved a report that appeared in the publication Bioscience. It warns that the world will face "untold human suffering" if people do not make lasting changes in human activities that influence climate change. The new report is called "the World Scientists' Warning of a Climate Emergency".Three leaders of the study from the United States worked on the study with scientists from universities in South Africa and Australia. This is the first time a large group of scientists have jointly used the word "emergency" when talking about climate change.
"In spite of 40 years of global climate negotiations(談判),we have generally conducted business as usual and have largely failed to deal with this difficult situation," the study said. "Climate change has arrived and is speeding up faster than many scientists expected."
The report referred to 6 areas that the world needs to deal with immediately. The scientists appealed to nations to use energy more efficiently and cut their use of fossil fuels. They suggested that lawmakers approve taxes on the burning of carbon-based fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas.
The scientists expressed support for women's rights and making family planning services reach all people. They said this would help to reduce unexpected changes in the size of the human population. The report urges (敦促) people to move toward more of a plant-based diet.Other areas of concern include preventing permanent loss of some plant and animal species in the forest. The report notes that the public should take strong action to move politicians (政治家) to approve lasting policy changes.
The scientists added,"We believe that the outlook will be positive if decision-makers and all of humanity immediately respond to this warning of a climate emergency, and act to preserve the life on the Earth, our only home."

(1)What will happen if climate change continues to grow worse?

            A.Humans will be homeless.
B.Humans will suffer quite a lot.
C.Plants and animals will die out.
            D.Forests will be destroyed forever.

I could feel the excitement rising in me as I held the beautifully wrapped present in my hands.I was unable to contain my curiosity any longer.I opened jye.ai.It was a brand new laptop(筆記本電腦).I had scored straight. As for my O level examination and this was my reward.I had always envied my friends who were exchanging news about chat rooms, instant messaging and e-mailing,all of which I knew nothing about. Now I was going to find out.
It started out simply enough.I was searching for some information online when I came across a social networking site.Soon I became addicted to chatting with my new-found electronic friend I began to spend more and more time on YouTube and became enslaved by Face-book and Twitter.I had never imagined that the day would come when I would be stuck by the glowing screen before me.Whenever I didn't surf these social networking sites,I would be going through conversation about boring things or fashion websites.
As time passed,I realized that I was addicted to the Internet During weekends, when I had more time on my hands,I could easily spend a few hours on my laptop. It came to a point where I chose to lock myself in my room, refusing to come out and take part in family discussions.I preferred to stay connected to the people I befriended on the Internet although I had never met them.Soon I was spending the early hours of the morning surfing the Internet.Sleep was replaced by naps(打盹)and my grades at school also began worse.
It was about this time that my parents started voicing their disapproval. It became obvious to them that I was spending too much time on the Internets.I was asked to decrease my usage of the laptop.Yet,however hard I tried,I was unable to pull myself away, unable to end my chat sessions, and unable to concentrate on my lessons.I was desperate for just another click, just another look at my e-mail or message board.
            注意:
            1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右;
