          • 11.When we see other people being given presents,we tend to want one ourselves.Birthdays allow people in most cultures a chance to receive gifts on their own special day once a year.At Christmas,on the other hand, some people who are not given presents may feel left out.It is a tricky issue for religious minorities in most Christian countries.
The Netherlands (Holland) provides an interesting example of how people can respond to others' luck.In a weekly lottery, about a third of the Dutch population waits for the one in 430,000 draw of a winning postcode. All ticket owners in the lucky area get a cash payment of about £ 10,000 ($13,000)and one of them receives a car as well.It is like a local Christmas:everyone in the postcode knows that some neighbors have won.A recent study found that the neighbors of winners are more likely to buy a new car within the next six months and might decorate the outside of their house, even though they did not buy a ticket.
Few children get Christmas presents which are worth £10,000 in value.Nevertheless, for a kid,Christmas is equal in value to a Wall Street trader's bonus. The competitive attitude can be almost as strong and obvious.American Jews are a case in point. The festival of lights,Hanukkah,is a relatively minor Jewish holiday, celebrated not long before Christmas. It is sometimes called "Jewish Christmas",and the holiday season in families with a mixed religious background has been named "Chrismukkah".Ran Abramitzky,Liran Einav and Oren Righi of Stanford University studied the behavior of Jewish parents in America and found that families with children under 18 celebrate Hanukkah more seriously. The fewer Jews there are in a given county, the more they spend on holiday related products.
Austrians and Germans with a Turkish background are another example. There is no Muslim holiday close to Christmas. The competitive pressure has instead led some to behave like atheists (people who believe God doesn't exist):they simply celebrate Christmas without its religious meaning.According to EthnOpinion,a Viennabased marketresearch institute, almost one in seven Austrians with a Turkish background observes the holiday. "The overall approach is very practical," says a GermanTurkish author and psychologist,Deniz Baspinar. "Even the Christmas tree in Turkish homes is no longer the ironic statement it once was."

(1)It can be inferred from the passage that

A.there are a total of 430,000 postcodes in Holland
B.the Dutch postcode lottery is held every other week
            C.about
            1
            2
of the Dutch buy postcode lottery tickets
D.the biggest lottery winner gets a car instead of cash
(2)The author takes the Dutch postcode lottery as an example to

            A.illustrate what competitive pressure is
B.appeal to readers to join postcode lottery
C.show the right way to respond to others' luck
D.tell readers every day in Holland is Christmas
(3)What can we know about American Jews?

            A.They call Christmas Hanukkah.
B.They celebrate the festival of lights.
            C.They have mixed religious backgrounds.
D.They spend little on products on holidays.
(4)How does the author develop the passage?

            A.By giving examples.
            B.By quoting wise words.
            C.By making comparisons.
            D.By making assumptions.

          • 12.Eating spicy foods frequently may be tied to a slightly lower risk of an earlier death, according to a new study. However, more research is needed to confirm the link, experts say.
The researchers found that the people in the study who ate spicy foods one or two days a week were 10 percent less likely to die during the study, compared with those who ate spicy foods less than once a week, according to the study published in the journal The BMJ.Moreover, the people in the study who ate spicy foods three or more days a week were 14 percent less likely to die during the study, compared with those who ate spicy foods less than once a week.
However, the study was observational, and so it is too early to tell whether there is a certain relationship between eating spicy foods and lower mortality, said study author Lu Qi,an associate professor at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston,Massachusetts. "We definitely need more data from other populations," Qi told Live Science."The researchers don't know why exactly the consumption of spicy foods may be linked to the drop of early death, but previous research on cells and animals has suggested several possible connections," Qi said.
"It is unclear whether the observed associations are the direct result of spicy foods intake,or whether spicy foods are simply a marker for other beneficial but unmeasured dietary components(成分)," said Nita Forouhi,a nutritional expert. At this point, researchers don't know for sure whether eating spicy foods can have a beneficial effect on human health and mortality,Forouhi wrote."Future research is needed to make sure whether spicy food consumption has the potential to improve health and reduce mortality directly,or if it is merely a marker of other dietary and lifestyle factors," she said.

          • 13.The Trans-Siberian Railway is a single train line that crosses nearly the complete length of Russia, from Moscow to Vladivostok. It covers a total of 5,772 miles, running from Europe to Asia.Unlike the longest flight in the world, which just began transporting passengers in 2018,the Trans-Siberian Railway started its business in 1916.
Anyone who has taken this long journey,or even just part of it,will tell you that it travels at a rather slow speed, passing through some amazing, remote areas of Russia. You don't have to make the full journey without stopping.Instead, you're recommended to get off where there are attractive views, since it stops in some pretty fantastic places. But you certainly can take the full journey non-stop.If you do,the trip will take about 144 hours-six full days!
You can book tickets with travel agencies. You can also make the booking online and tickets will be sent to your hotel or personal address.Children under 4 years old accompanied by adults can travel free, but cannot take up a seat.A child ticket needs to be bought if you want to get a seat for the child.
There are longer railway services in the transportation world, but only one of them is a passenger line as some longer routes transport goods, not travellers. This railway may not be the fastest or the most modern, but it's clearly still an important player in the transportation world!

(1)Why is the longest flight mentioned in the first paragraph?

A.To compare the two different ways of transport.
B.To state the Trans-Siberian Railway is out of date.
C.To explain how long the Trans-Siberian Railway covers.
D.To show the great history of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
(2)Which of the following statements about the Trans-Siberian Railway is TRUE?

            A.A non-stop journey is suggested.
B.It takes six full days to finish a non-stop trip.
C.Children are always free of charge on this trip.
D.It is the longest railway in the transportation world.
(3)Where does this passage probably come from?

            A.A history textbook.
            B.A science fiction.
            C.A business journal.
            D.A travel magazine.

Tom has an aunt who lives in a far-off village. He hadn't seen her for two years and he really missed her.
Tom spent a lot of time with his aunt when he was a little boy.At that time, his parents were too busy with their work,so they sent him to his aunt.It was his aunt who took care of him for a long time.He remembered that back then a girl sometimes played with him.But he couldn't remember her clearly. After all,it had been so many years before.
Last week,Tom decided to visit his aunt. And he called her first.
"Hello,Auntie. This is Tom.How are you?" asked Tom over the phone.
                "I'm fine,Tom.Thanks.I'm just a bit lonely," said Tom's aunt.Hearing that,he knew he had made a right decision.
"I'm coming this weekend.I want to spend the weekend with you," he immediately said, thinking his aunt would be surely full of joy.
"Really? That's great!I miss you so much." his aunt said excitedly.
Tom set off on Friday afternoon. He thought he would arrive by bus in the evening, but there was an accident on the road and all the traffic was stopped for almost an hour. When he got off the bus,it was getting dark.
It's a ten-minute walk from the bus station to his aunt's house. The village had experienced a lot of changes.Tom looked around curiously.Just at that moment, another bus stopped and a girl got off the bus.The girl passed by Tom and began to walk into the village.Thinking that his aunt was waiting for him,Tom began to walk into the village, too.
He walked behind the girl. After about two minutes,it seemed that the girl noticed him.She looked back hurriedly, and then continued to walk.Moments later, the girl looked back again and then quickened her pace.
            Paragraph 1:
It seemed that the girl was a bit scared.

            Paragraph 2 :
Clearly,it frightened the girl even more.
