13. Simple household chores (家務) could help prevent dementia (癡呆癥) by boosting our brain size,a new study claims.Canadian scientists found older adults who spent more time on household chores showed greater brain size—a strong predictor of cognitive(認知) health. These chores-including cleaning, tidying, cooking, heavy housework and gardening—could all give the human brain a workout and prevent the condition.
"Scientists already know that exercise has a positive impact on the brain, but our study is the first to show that the same maybe true for household chores," said study author Noah Koblinsky at Rotman Research Institute (RRI) at Baycrest in Toronto,Canada. "Highlighting the benefits of household chores may motivate older adults to be more active by providing a more realistic, low risk form of physical activity."
The researchers looked at the links between household chores, brain volume and cognition in a group of 66 cognitively healthy older adults between 65 and 85 years of age.The participants attended three assessment visits at Baycrest Hospital in Toronto, including a health evaluation, structural brain imaging and cognitive assessment. They were asked about the time they spent on household chores, such as tidying, dusting, meal preparation and clean-up,shopping,heavy housework, gardening and yard work, home repairs and care-giving.
The researchers found that older adults who spent more time engaging in such activities had greater brain volume, regardless of how much they engaged in any form of physical exercise, such as running. As a next step, the researchers would like to assess household physical activity more objectively using wearable technology. With additional funding, they could also plan controlled trials with the aim of increasing individuals' household activity and studying brain changes over time.
(1)How does housework prevent dementia according to the new study?
A.By allowing the brain to rest.
B.By increasing brain volume.
C.By monitoring daily activities.
D.By predicting cognitive health.
(2)What can we learn from Koblinsky's words?
A.The old people seldom want to do housework.
B.Exercise has little positive impact on the brain.
C.Doing household chores is risky for old people.
D.The new study may encourage the old to do housework.
(3)What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the research?
A.Its finding.
B.Its purpose.
C.Its process.
D.Its significance.
(4)What can be inferred about the researchers from the last paragraph?
A.They want to improve their research.
B.They lack necessary financial support.
C.They refuse to organize controlled trials.
D.They consider wearable technology worthless.組卷:0引用:2難度:0.5 -
14.The forest of today will not be the forests of tomorrow.Rising temperatures, trees being cut down, development and climate-change-caused disasters are changing the very makeup of the Earth's forests, new research published in Science finds.
Older, bigger trees are being lost at an alarming rate, making the planet's forests shorter and younger. The change is being driven at different rates by different causes in different places, the study's authors say,but the consequences will be global.
Old growth forests absorb and store massive amounts of climate-warming CO2.They provide habitats for rare and endangered species and promote rich biodiversity.Researchers found that the world lost roughly one-third of its old growth forests between 1900 and 2015.In North America and Europe, they found that tree mortality(死亡率) has doubled in the past 40 years.
"Warming temperatures, wildfires, logging and insect outbreaks were among the many causes of the decline," says Nate McDowell, the study's lead author. "What's perhaps more concerning is that the trajectory(發展軌跡) of all these disturbances is generally increasing over time and is expected to continue increasing in the future." he says.
McDowell's focus is on how trees are affected by rising temperatures, arguably the biggest driver of forest change. To get a broader understanding of how forests are changing globally,he brought in more than 20 other researchers in different fields.Together, they examined more than 160 previous studies about tree mortality and its global causes, applying current satellite data and modeling to create a look at the Earth's changing forests to date.
"It's not a shock, but it's very sad," says Kristina,an ecologist and leader of the ForestGEO Ecosystems &Climate Program who helped with the research. "We as a human society are hitting these forests so rapidly with so many different changes that they can't keep up." she says.
(1)What can we know from the figures in the paragraph 3?
A.More trees should be planted in no time.
B.We are losing old growth forests quickly.
C.Forests are important habitats for wildlife.
D.Different trees can absorb CO2 differently.
(2)What can we say about McDowell's research?
A.Timely and long-standing.
B.All-sided and careful.
C.Time-limited and regional.
D.Traditional and extensive.
(3)What's Kristina's attitude towards the findings of the research?
A.Worried.
B.Optimistic.
C.Supportive.
D.Indifferent.
(4)What's the writer's purpose of writing the passage?
A.To call on people to plant more trees.
B.To discuss the influence of climate change.
C.To warn against the loss of old growth forests.
D.To compare forests of today with those of the future.組卷:0引用:1難度:0.6

18.A Special Christmas Gift December 1st.Always on that day,Mom would softly announce, "It's time." When we heard those words,we all knew it was time to write our letters to Santa. So,we began our special letters.Jimmy asked for a baseball.Wilbur liked anything to do with art. This was my letter to Santa.
Dear Santa,
My Mom and Dad say I have been very good this year.I only want two toys this year. But what I want most is a dog.I have been asking for one all year.Mom and Dad say we can't afford to feed an animal right now.It makes me sad,but it's alright.Maybe next year Mom will say it's OK.That's all,Santa.Say hi to Mrs.Claus.And Merry Christmas.
Love,Sheila The next morning we would walk three blocks to the large red, white and blue mailbox on the corner of Stimson and Forth. It was a special mailbox, only for letters children wrote to Santa.
Christmas Eve finally arrived.I was so excited that I found it difficult to fall asleep. But sleep finally came and so did Christmas morning.I woke up hearing my brothers down the hall shouting at my Mom and Dad. "Wake up!Wake up!Santa came!Come on!Come on!" Jimmy came running and jumping on my bed. "Santa's been here!Come on!Let's open presents!"
We all ran downstairs. Our eyes were shining like wildfire as we eyed over plenty of presents under the tree. Then Dad handed out the gifts one at a time.I kept watching as my brothers unwrapped gift after gift.Dad said, "This year you are going to be last to get your presents, because you are the oldest." I didn't think anything of it but nodded.
