11. Kristin Schell is the founder of The Turquoise Table,a movement of ordinary people who want to create community in their own front yards.Ten years ago,she and her husband and their four children moved to a new home in Austin,Texas.
One day,Kristin needed backyard furniture for a party and bought some picnic tables from Lowe's.The delivery driver set one table down in her front yard by mistake. After the party, she painted the table turquoise (青綠色)—her favorite color—and put it in the front yard.
That turquoise table became the place where Kristin and her kids hung out. They played games, did crafts and ate snacks.Neighbors began to stop by to introduce themselves and sit down for a chat.Kristin invited people to join her at the table for coffee or iced tea.Construction workers on jobs in the neighborhood took their lunch breaks at the table.A babysitter walking by with her young charges sat down to rest. Then neighbors asked Kristin if their family could put a picnic table in their front yard too.A movement came into being.
People often hesitate to invite others into their homes. They think their house is too messy,it's not big enough or they don't have enough time. However,Kristin's picnic table takes away the excuses and the pressure.
"Hospitality (好客) doesn't merely mean entertaining people with a meal or a big party. At the picnic table, all I have to do is to show up." She likes how it enables her to take a small step toward easing loneliness and building relationships in her community.
A decade after their Texas beginnings, thousands of Turquoise Tables exist in all 50 states and in 13 countries around the world. Not all of them are actually turquoise. "No matter what color it is,it's a friendship table," Kristin says.

12."I have cancer." Mom said and held me in a tight hug.I could feel her chest shaking as she tried not to cry but failed.
For all of my twenty-four years,my mom had been supportive.Strength and protection had always flowed from her to me.Now I knew it would have to flow the other way.
Mom didn't stay down for long. After the shock of breast-cancer,she armed herself with a notebook and a pen and a thousand questions for the doctors. She took notes on white blood cell counts and medications(藥物)with long names as though she were studying for entrance exams into medical school."The not-knowing is the worst." she said.
The operation was successful. The chemo(化療)was the harder part.I went with Mom to every chemo treatment. She rarely complained, though her hair was gone and her toenails and fingernails fell out one by one.She joked that she could save money on nail polish and put it toward the doctor bills, even though she never wore nail polish."Cancer can take my hair,my nails,my health,my very life. But it can't take my smile." Mom said.
Mom learned to share her fears with me,and it formed an even deeper bond between us.Yet I am certain there were fears she didn't share because she was still protecting me-worries she only shared with Dad.Even in the darkest hours, she would just joke about the cancer.Mom always said,"When you look your greatest fear in the eye and laugh at it,you take away some of its power."
Mom was one of the lucky ones. She did beat her cancer, though not without scars. From her,I've learned I may not get to choose what I face, but I do get to choose how I face it.

18.閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進(jìn)行續(xù)寫(xiě),使之構(gòu)成一個(gè)完整的故事。
The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read beneath the long branches of an old willow tree.I was abandoned.Endless quarrels with my family had left me nowhere to go but this desolate corner of the park.As I sat on the bench, recent events began to flash through my mind.Days seemed like months to me recently. No cozy home to stay.No happy memories with family. No considerate family members to talk to.Even the book I was reading was no fun.Not content with life,I had a good reason to frown, for the world was intended to drag me down.
And if that weren't enough to ruin my day,a young boy out of breath approached me,all tired from play.He stood right in front of me with his head tilted down and said with great excitement, "Look what I found!" In his hand was a flower. What a pitiful sight, its petals were all worn-not enough rain,or too little light. He must have picked the flower from somewhere shady and sunless, just like where I was staying these days.I couldn't help being self-pitying.Wanting him to take his dead flower away and go off to play,I faked a small smile and then looked away. "Why couldn't everyone just leave me be!" I thought to myself, upset and gloomy.
But instead of leaving,he sat next to my side and placed the flower to his nose and declared loudly with certainty, "It sure smells pretty and it must be beautiful, too. That's why I picked it;here,it's for you. " The weed before me was dying or dead, not vibrant of colors, orange, yellow or red.But I knew I must take it,or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower, and replied, "Just what I need." Again, instead of placing the flower in my hand,he held it mid-air without reason or plan.Curiosity drove me to look into his eyes.Blue as the sea, there is no color or light in his beautiful eyes.
