          • 12.How many phone numbers can you remember by heart? It's probably fewer than you would like.Actually, you're not alone.Out of more than 1,000 Americans who were surveyed, more than half said that they couldn't recall the phone numbers of their friends and neighbors. And 44%said that they couldn't remember their relatives' phone numbers. In their eyes, there is no point in filling their heads with phone numbers if they're all stored in smart phones that are with them almost all the time.
In fact, most people are suffering from a sort of digital amnesia(失憶癥).More than 90%of those surveyed agreed that they used the Internet as an online extension of their brains.Rote memorization(死記硬背)was once an important part of modern education, but we just need a click or slide now. That's making us worse at remembering things.
Researchers found that when people expected to have access to information online, they were less likely to remember actual facts, but more likely to remember how to find them.As a result,we are already becoming one with our computer tools, growing into interconnected systems that remember less by knowing information than by knowing where the information can be found.
However, some believe it isn't necessarily a bad thing--maybe it gives them more chances to think through things. We certainly have access to more knowledge now than ever, even if it isn't all stored in our brains.
Even so,I still believe that there are more risks to this new world of memory beyond losing our ability to recall some information such as who the 15th President was. That kind of information may always be a click away, but the important things are personal ones, like the way your parents smiled at your wedding. It's harder to recall or find online. If you're relying on yourself to keep track of those memories, they will be much more meaningful.

(1)Paragraph 1 is mainly used to
            .
            A.serve as the background
            B.introduce the topic
            C.explain new research
            D.a(chǎn)ttract readers' attention
(2)What's the main cause of people's suffering from digital amnesia?

            A.Dealing with too many things.
            B.Seldom thinking about questions.
C.Relying on the Internet too much.
            D.The changes of their memories.
(3)What can be learned from paragraphs 3&4?

A.People can receive less information using internet.
B.People can gain knowledge more easily than before.
C.It's a bad thing to have a chance to think through things.
D.People find it hard to remember how to find information.
(4)What's the author's attitude towards people's memories now?

            A.Worried.
            B.Optimistic.

            D.Confident.

          • 14.When people talk about American popular music, they don't just mean country music or rock music. There are two other types of popular music with national and international appeal that are basically American. One is jazz. The other is a musical form associated with New York City theaters.
Jazz dates from African religious and folk music. The themes and songs of jazz music have historical origins. They come from songs sung by black Americans in church or at work. There have been different kinds of jazz music:bebop,ragtime,swing,boogie-woogie and others.
In playing jazz music, the performers combine rhythms and songs with their skills of improvisation(即興創(chuàng)作).Modern jazz music has developed into a complex musical style enjoyed more by musicians and older jazz lovers than by the general public.
American theater has developed another American musical style. It is associated with a street in New York City,Broadway.Broadway musicals are dramatic productions in which the story is told partly by dialogue and partly through songs. The lyrics of these songs give background information about the story and express the feelings of the characters in the story. Many Broadway musicals have been made into movies that have been shown all over the world.Oklahoma,Sound of Music,My Fair Lady and West Side Story are some good examples.
Songs from these musicals and others have translations in various languages that are sung around the world. Many of them have become popular with people who have not even seen the musicals for which they were written.

          • 15.You Are a Better Person Than You Think You Are Maybe you haven't achieved goals in a self-appointed time frame.(1)
But this doesn't mean you are a bad person or a failure. You could indeed be a wonderful individual. You could actually be a much better person than you believe you are. So,let's examine the idea that you might be better than you think.
               You show kindness
Being polite and kind is the mark of a good person. When you do this, you are treating others like you would want to be treated.(2)
Even the smallest of things do not go unnoticed and are traits that you have a good heart.
               You are a positive person
Keeping an optimistic attitude is also a trait of a good person with a powerful character. It is easy to become negative with all the bad things going on in the world, but there's another way to look at these things. When you're actually better than you think, you will have the habit of looking on the bright side of every situation and seeing the best in everyone.(3)

               (4)

Being wise is not about being intelligent. It's about learning from life experiences. Why does this make you a better person than you think?Wisdom can be passed to others to help them avoid the same mistakes you made. You are a good person if you've collected wisdom and love to share lessons with others.
So,go easy on yourself.Appreciate who you are.If there are things you need to change, that's okay.(5)
It's about our attitude and our heart.I bet,if you took the time to read this, you are a better person than you think.

            A.You give honest comments.
B.It's just all about showing optimism.
C.We all have problems and imperfections.
D.You are wise, and you share your wisdom.
E.Maybe you have made many mistakes as well.
F.Respecting others and their space shows adulthood, which is a sign of a truly good person.
G.This may include opening doors for others or picking up change for people in front of you at the checkout line.
