11.It has been very clear in recent days at Balcombe that few issues cause greater concern than energy policy. Many village communities feel their countryside is being ruined by the power-producing machines of wind farms;yet they never take "direct action",even though the planning laws put them at a severe disadvantage. And the generous subsidies (財政補貼) ,which encourage the expansion of wind power, are not favorable to the village communities and set landowners in conflict with other residents (居民).
Those who disagree with the rapid expansion of wind farms state that the damage they cause is out of proportion(比例) to the benefits they bring, because their energy output cannot match that of the carbon-based power stations they are supposed to replace.Supporters insist that wind must be part of a mix of renewable, nuclear and carbon, and that the country is committed to meeting EU(European Union) targets for non-carbon energy generation.
Against this background, the fact that there is an argument within the Government over whether to publish an official report on wind farms' impact on the countryside becomes even more extraordinary. The two parties in the coalition (聯合) government are in disagreement over what it should say.
We have some advice for the two parties:publish the report, and let the country be the judge.Even if it contains evidence that wind farms are harmful,it will hardly be a pleasant surprise to people who do not like them.Equally, supporters must argue their case by acknowledging the concerns and explaining why they are either misplaced or worthy of much attention.
The suggestion that further negotiations are to take place to produce an "acceptable" report suggests that the politics of coalition government are doing the country harm in a certain way.Given the sensitivities involved, all the information should be available so that people can reach their own conclusions, rather than being left with the suspicion(猜疑)that facts are being replaced by political beliefs.
(1)We can learn from the first paragraph that
A.the planning laws offer great benefits to the residents
B.the residents are in favor of the expansion of wind farms
C.many village communities are satisfied with the subsidies
D.energy policy catches much attention of the public
(2)Supporters think that the expansion of wind power
A.is more rapid than that of carbon-based power
B.guarantees an increase in energy output
C.is expected to be much better than that of nuclear power
D.agrees with EU targets for non-carbon energy generation
(3)It can be inferred from the passage that
A.an official report will settle the energy problem
B.the two parties are divided over the issue of wind farms
C.the two parties have agreed on a further negotiation
D.political beliefs concerning energy issue go against facts
(4)Which of the following reflects the author's opinion?
A.Increase political impact on energy policy.
B.Release a statement of supporters on wind farms.
C.Let the nation judge the facts about wind power.
D.Leave the two parties to reach their own conclusions.組卷:0引用:1難度:0.5 -
12.If you're looking for a university with a strong international outlook but feel swept over by all the application options, here is some guidance to get you started.
UK
International students must apply to universities in the UK through a system known as UCAS.This system allows students to apply to up to five universities with just one application. It costs £20 for a single choice or £25 for more than one choice.
The application consists of a series of questions to determine the student's schooling and applicants should describe their personal interests and related experiences.
Switzerland
Switzerland has four official languages and its universities are among the most international in the world.International applicants may need to take an entrance exam if they have a foreign school certificate, and must also prove that they have a good grasp of the French language.usually through taking a language exam. The full application costs 50 Swiss Francs for a holder of a Swiss diploma and 150 Swiss Francs for holders of foreign diplomas.
Canada
International applicants have to write up a personal profile as part of their application, which is very similar to the personal statement required for a UK university application.Students will also have to prove their English-language competency-there are nine ways to meet the English Language Admission Standard, which are listed on many university websites.
Singapore
The process of applying to a Singaporean university is very much alike, but overseas students may be delighted to find that the native applicants have to cover the same procedures:filling out an online application form and submit identification documents, supporting documents and an application fee of ﹩20.
(1)Which country requires international applicants know French well?
A.UK.
B.Switzerland.
C.Canada.
D.Singapore.
(2)What part of the application is similar between the UK and Canada?
A.The application system.
B.The number of universities.
C.The application cost.
D.The personal statement.
(3)What's special about the application process in Singapore?
A.Applicants need to pay a lot.
B.It is much simpler than elsewhere.
C.It's no different for native students.
D.The competition is even more fierce.組卷:1引用:1難度:0.5 -
13.Four years ago, more than 700 computer scientists competed in a contest to build an artificial intelligence (AI) that could pass an 8th-grade science exam. They all flunked.Even the most developed system couldn't score higher than 60 points on the test.AI can't match the language and logic (邏輯) skills that students are expected to have when they enter middle school.
Later,a system named Aristo was developed by the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence,a lab in the US.It recently passed an 8-grade science exam taken by many US students, the New York Times reported. It correctly answered more than 90% of the questions. Then it was given a 12th-grade exam and it scored more than 80 points.
Aristo was able to pass the exam because it can not only understand language but also use logical thinking to solve difficult problems. For example,it can understand what a forest fire is and how it could affect animals like rabbits. The Aristo system used Bert,a kind of technology developed by Google,to answer the questions.Bert has "read" thousands of Wikipedia articles and books. If it looks at a sentence with a missing word,it can correctly guess what the word is.With the help of Bert,Aristo has "read" a lot of science questions and answers.Over time,it was able to find logical patterns (模式) on its own.
Aristo's success means that AI systems are getting better at understanding language and even respond to language. However,we can't compare this technology to real human students and their logical ability, said Jingjing Liu,a Microsoft researcher, who has been working on similar technologies.
(1)Which of the following can replace the underlined word "flunked" in the first paragraph?
A.Failed.
B.Passed.
C.Missed.
D.Improved.
(2)Why was Aristo developed?
A.To help students do well in exams.
B.To improve the logical skills of AI.
C.To help make school tests more scientific.
D.To show ATS ability to solve science problems.
(3)What is the purpose of the third paragraph?
A.To show what else Aristo can do.
B.To tell what Aristo can learn on its own.
C.To explain how Aristo learns to solve problems.
D.To introduce another achievement in technology.
(4)What do Jingjing Liu's words show?
A.AI is not as developed as it might seem.
B.Humans can't live without AI in the future.
C.AI will soon replace humans in many tasks.
D.Aristo's logical ability still needs improving.組卷:1引用:2難度:0.5 -
14.Some creative people see colours when they hear different sounds.Others see colours when they see words and numbers printed in black and white. These interesting people are called synaesthetes, and what they experience is called synaesthesia.
①___________
A study at the University of Sussex is finding out how learning to see sounds as colours or think of letters in colour could improve your IQ and memory.
Study leaders Dr.Daniel Bor and Dr.Nicolas Rothen have been working on memory for a number of years. They want to see which parts of the brain do different jobs.Dr.Bor says that carrying out these tests has given them the opportunity to find out more about how we use different kinds of memory.
②___________
He explains that Professor Simon Baron Cohen,of the University of Cambridge, was largely responsible for beginning the modern science of synaesthesia in the 1980s.His tests showed that synaesthesia was real, and this made lots of scientists in different places want to do similar research.
Information chunking
Dr Bor based his latest research around something scientists already know a lot about — "chunking".He explains that this is a way of breaking large pieces of information into smaller units,to make it easier to remember. When I give you my phone number,01274737215,you probably remember it as 012 74 73 72 15,or something similar. If you can remember 012 and the first 74,you can remember the rest. You can get some amazing benefits from chunking.
This is really important for understanding synaesthesia.Dr Bor says that synaesthesia adds extra information to things that are difficult to remember, such as letters and numbers,or extra colours. This helps us remember things better.
③___________
"All these signs are pointing towards synaesthesia being connected to greater abilities to do certain things, certain jobs," says Dr.Bor. "So,the study began as a way to test that." They developed the study from an idea by Dr.Nicolas Rothen who had trained people for ten minutes a day for a week. The results were not huge, but they were interesting. They used those ideas in the study and they did see strong benefits.
④___________
They discovered that, after training, people were able to pass the normal synaesthesia tests, and their IQ jumped up about 12 points!
As Dr.Bor says,"Synaesthetes are really pleased and proud that they get a memory advantage and they see the world in this extra special way."

Last Christmas my older sister Jane got a unicycle (獨輪腳踏車) she had requested.I thought it kind of strange, wondering why she would want something like that. She did ride and practice for a while, but eventually stopped.
Curious,I tried it,finding it very hard and thinking it impossible for a weak girl like me to learn.Since our dining room of our old house had low beams (屋梁),I used them like monkey bars to practice riding, which helped a lot.Because I thought it was really fun,I practiced every spare moment I had, teaching myself to go forwards, backwards and to turn.Practicing was something I loved to do in my spare time, but it did get discouraging when I fell. After months of practicing,I finally made it.
One morning, our teacher Maria excitedly announced that a school talent show was to be held to raise money for charity. She encouraged my classmates to sign up for it.I'm not always the best in front of a crowd, which was why I was very nervous when I meant to put on my performance by doing a hula hoop (圈) and riding a unicycle on stage. But I overcame my fear and entered myself for the talent show, for which I practiced a lot in case I should mess up.
My routine(整套動作)was to do the hula hoop from my neck, down to my stomach, then to my knees. After that,I was to ride my unicycle forwards and backwards on stage.Lastly I would do the hula hoop while riding the unicycle.I was to do all this accompanied by my carefully selected music.I wondered what people from my seventh grade would think of my performance. With my friends inspiring me,I built up my cjye.aifidence.On the night of the show, many people found out there was going to be a unicycle performance,so more came, even the headmaster.
注意:續寫詞數應為150左右。
