11.Lifesaving heart operation When Tal Golesworthy was told he needed lifesaving heart operation in 1993,he said no.Golesworthy has Marfan syndrome (馬凡氏綜合征).
Back in 1993,when he was living in the west of England, his doctor told him that the aorta(主動脈)in his heart was so enlarged that it would unavoidable burst unless he underwent major operation.
"They talked through the options," says Golesworthy, "and I was not interested. The operation really didn't look attractive. " What he particularly didn't like was having to be on blood thinners after the operation, something that would prevent blood clots(血栓)but presented its own risks: "I was riding motorbikes then, and skiing,so my whole lifestyle would have been affected. " By 2000,however,his condition had worsened.Realizing something had to be done,Golesworthy put his years of experience as research - and - development engineer to good use.He decided he would fix himself. " Learning new stuff and developing new ideas, that was my job," Golesworthy says.
The aorta,he thought ,needed support on the outside. And wrapping something around the outside of the aorta would require a special operation. So Golesworthy subjected himself to 30 hours in an MRI scanner;used 3 D printing to create a physical exact copy of the part of his heart. "Luckily,I'd done a lot of work with technical materials," he says.
Strong determination coupled with an original yet practical solution won him the support of two leading surgeons and helped him raise the money to develop his idea.In May 2004,at the age of 47,he became the guinea pig for his own invention. The operation was a success.
(1)Why did Tai Golesworthy refuse the operation at first?
A.A better solution was on the way.
B.He was afraid of life being affected.
C.The risk of operation tended to cause death.
D.He would like to be operated in his own way.
(2)What helped Golesworthy to fix himself?
A.His creative spirit.
B.Regular exercise.
C.Doctors' suggestions.
D.His similar experience.
(3)What do the underlined words in the last paragraph "the guinea pig" refer to?
A.The lovely pet.
B.The important assistant.
C.The experimental subject.
D.The person to raise money.
(4)Which words can best describe Tai Golesworthy?
A.Creative and kind.
B.Strong and imaginary.
C.Devoted and generous.
D.Determined and brave.組卷:9引用:3難度:0.6 -
12.The future of space exploration may depend on an art form from the past:origami(折紙藝術),the ancient art of paper folding.
Researchers from Washington State University(WSU),US,have used origami to possibly solve the problem of storing and moving fuel to rocket engines,a key challenge in space travel, according to Newswise. They've developed a foldable plastic fuel "bladder(囊狀物)" resistant to super cold temperatures, which could be used to store and pump fuel in spacecrafts of the future.Their findings have recently been published in the journal Cryogenics.
"Folks have been trying to make bags for rocket fuel for a long time," said Jake Leachman, one of the lead researchers. "We currently don't do large,long-duration trips because we can't store fuel long enough in space."
Meanwhile,NASA is also looking to paper folding to help observe distant planets. The agency is currently developing Starshade,a foldable,sunflower-shaped piece of hardware that would help block starlight and enable telescopes to view distant objects more clearly in space.
"A huge part of my job is looking at something on paper and asking,'Can we fly this?'" Manan Arya,a technologist in California, said. "Once I realized this is how you fold spacecraft structures,I became interested in origami.I realized I was good at it and enjoyed it.Now,I fold constantly."
Using origami for space purposes isn't new, however.Solar arrays(太陽能陣列),experimental wings for space shuttle programs and an inflatable (可充氣的) satellite were also inspired by origami in both past and present space projects.
"With most origami, the magic comes from the folding," Robert Salazar, who helped design the Starshade and now works on the Transformers project.jye.ai in a statement. "There are so many patterns to still be explored."
(1)Which can be the suitable title for the text?
A.Folding into space.
B.The art of paper folding.
C.Space exploration.
D.The origami-inspired projects.
(2)How could the "bladder" help in future missions?
A.To protect spacecrafts from extreme weather.
B.To be used to store and supply fuel in spacecrafts.
C.To help rocket engines cut energy consumption.
D.To be used to improve energy efficiency.
(3)What can we know about NASA's Starshade?
A.It can be used to get telescopes closer to stars.
B.It can enlarge the view of telescopes in space.
C.It can absorb a star's light before it enters telescopes.
D.It can help telescopes get clearer pictures of objects in space.
(4)What is this text?
A.A travel journal.
B.A digest.
C.A science report.
D.An advertisement.組卷:8引用:1難度:0.5 -
13.An exciting landing process of Chang'e-4 lunar probe (月球探測器)was seen through the monitor at Beijing Aerospace Control Center in Beijing,Jan.3,2019.It touched down on the far side of the moon at 10:26 a.m.Beijing Time, becoming the first spacecraft soft-landing on the moon's unknown side never visible from Earth.
China's Chang'e-4 probe has started the exploration on the far side of the moon thanks to the relay satellite that provides a communication link with ground control. The relay satellite, named Queqiao, meaning Magpie Bridge, after a Chinese legend (傳說),was launched on May 21,2018,and became the first communication satellite operating in the halo orbit, nearly 500,000 km from the earth. It can also provide communication for probes from other countries. The relay satellite will also be used for scientific and technological experiments. The maximum distance between the satellite and the Chang'e-4 probe on the far side of the moon is 79,000 km.The satellite processes data from the probe and sends it to Earth.
The satellite can stay in its orbit for a long time due to its relatively low fuel consumption,as the earth's and moon's gravity balances its orbital moving. While in orbit,it can "see" both the earth and the far side of the moon.
The concept of using a relay satellite in the halo orbit was first put forward by U.S.space experts in the 1960s,but was realized by Chinese space engineers.
Researchers hope to use the cameras on the satellite to record asteroids (小行星) hitting the far side of the moon.To control the cost of the Chang'e-4 probe, the relay satellite was designed to be relatively small, weighing about 400 kg.
Researchers had just 30 months to develop the satellite, putting them under high pressure. To promote public interest in space exploration, the China National Space Administration invited people to write down their wishes for lunar and space exploration, and the relay satellite carries the names of tens of thousands of participants and their messages.
(1)What do we learn from the second paragraph?
A.The relay satellite was launched on Jan.3,2019.
B.Chang'e-4 probe was the first communication satellite.
C.The relay satellite only explores the far side of the moon.
D.The relay satellite can handle data from Chang'e-4 probe.
(2)Why was the size of the relay satellite relatively small?
A.To reduce the cost as much as possible.
B.To make it circle Moon for a longer time.
C.To avoid being crashed by other satellites.
D.To follow American space experts' advice.
(3)What made researchers sufFer from great stress?
A.Few people interested in the exploration on the moon.
B.The relay satellite carrying too much equipment.
C.Their lacking enough time to develop the relay satellite.
D.People's never being optimistic about the relay satellite.
(4)What is the main idea of the text?
A.China is a new space power after the USA.
B.Chang'e-4 probe lands on Moon's far side.
C.Chinese space engineers make much progress.
D.Space exploration is a dangerous challenge.組卷:5引用:3難度:0.6 -

18.A GIFT FOR GRANDPA Summer vacation was coming.Jack and his brother Berlin were filled with excitement as they thought of visiting their grandparents again.
The big day came at last. After the happy family got ready, they set out for the grandparents' eagerly. On the way,the brothers were excitedly talking about the fun they had with grandparents.
A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared.Behind the property was the forest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. They arrived at the driveway,at the end of which Grandma was waiting for them joyfully.
Jack and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then swept to the living room, shouting excitedly "Grandpa,we are back!"
Seeing his grandsons,Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength from the chair but in vain.A helpless expression flashed on his face.Grandma explained that his health was declining rapidly and maybe couldn't stand up on his own forever. But Grandpa declared stubbornly(倔強地), "I can! " Certainly,he was stuck in his boyish way.Mum and grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time. They sat together and chatted about what happened recently.
The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest.Tall trees stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones rose straight like soldiers.Grandpa was once a great explorer full of wisdom. He could tell where the birds came from only by their calls and songs. The trees, birds, lizards, lots of bugs...How many merry moments they spent with Grandpa in the kingdom!
But now Grandpa couldn't get up,which made them worried. "We'd think out a way to cheer him up." Jack said. "Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird." Berlin suggested. "But he hates birds being caged!" Jack shook his head.
Then a bright idea came to Jack's mind. "Why not make a cane(拐杖)out of a young tree!"
