          • 11.There is an old joke among pilots that says the ideal flight crew is a computer,a pilot and a dog.The computer's job is to fly the plane. The pilot is there to feed the dog.And the dog's job is to bite the pilot if he tries to touch the computer.
Handing complex tasks to computers is not new.But recent progress in machine learning,a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI),has enabled computers to handle many problems which were previously beyond jye.aim.The result has been an AI boom, with computers moving into everything from medical diagnosis and insurance to self-driving cars.
There is a problem, though.Machine learning works by giving computers the ability to train themselves, which adapts their programming to the task at hand.People struggle to understand exactly how those self-written programs do what they do.When algorithms(計算機程序)are doing small tasks, such as playing chess or recommending a film to watch, this "black box" problem can be safely ignored. When they are deciding who gets a loan,or how to drive a car through a crowded city,it is potentially harmful. And when things go wrong, then customers, regulators and the courts will want to know why.
For some people this is a reason to hold back AL France's digital-economy minister,Mounir Mahjoubi, has said that the government should not use any algorithm whose decisions cannot be explained. But that is an overreaction. The difficulties caused by clever computers are not unheard- of.Society already has plenty of experience dealing with problematic black boxes;the most common are called human beings, who can't even figure out what's going on in a brajye.ai.In response to the weakness in humans, society has evolved a series of workable coping mechanisms, called laws, rules and regulations. Many of these can be applied to machines as well.
Humans have worked with computers on complex tasks for decades. One lesson from such applications is that, wherever possible, people should supervise(監督)the machjye.aies.In that joke, pilots are vital in case something happens that is beyond the scope of artificial intelligence. As computers spread, companies and governments should ensure the first line of defence is a real person who can overrule the algorithms if necessary.

(1)Why is the joke mentioned in Paragraph 1?

            A.To make people laugh.
            B.To foresee future aeroplane industry.
C.To introduce the latest model of aeroplanes.
D.To raise people's awareness of computers performing complex tasks.
(2)What has caused the increasing application of computers in various fields?

            A.The shortage of labor force.
            B.The rise of artificial intelligence.
            C.The encouragement of government.
            D.The development of medical economy.
(3)Why are some people opposed to AI?

            A.Black boxes always go wrong.
            B.Laws forbid machine learning.
C.They don't understand how AI works.
D.Computers are trying to replace human beings.

          • 12.If you think that running marathons will help you live a long and healthy life, new research may come as a shock.According to a recent scientific study, people who do a very strenuous workout are as likely to die as people who do no exercise at all.
Scientists in Denmark have been studying over 1,000 joggers(慢跑者)and non - joggers for 12 years. The death rates from the sample group indicate that people who jog at a proper pace two or three times a week for less than two and a half hours in total are least likely to die.The best speed to jog at was found to be about 5 miles per hour. The research suggests that people who jog more than three times a week or at higher speeds of over 7 mph die at the same rate as non - joggers. The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural changes to the heart and arteries(動脈).Over time, this can cause serious effects.
Peter Schnohr,a researcher in Copenhagen, said,"If your goal is to decrease risk of death and improve life expectancy(壽命),jogging a few times a week at a proper pace is a good strategy.Anything more is not just unnecessary, and it may be harmful."
The implications(暗示)of this are that moderate forms of exercise such as tai chi, yoga and walking may be better for us than "iron man" events, triathlons and long-distance running and cycling.According to Jacob Louis Marott, another researcher involved in the study, "You don't actually have to do that much to have a good impact on your health. And perhaps you shouldn't actually do too much".

(1)Which of the following words can replace "strenuous" in Paragraph 1?

            A.regular.
            B.hard.
            C.practical.
            D.limited.
(2)Why does the author presents the figures (數字) in Paragraph 2?

            A.To suggest giving up jogging.
B.To show risks of doing sports.
            C.To provide supportive evidence.
            D.To introduce the research content.
(3)According to the scientists, why is too much exercise harmful?

A.It may injure the heart and arteries.
B.It can make the body tired out.
            C.It will bring much pressure.
            D.It consumes too much energy.
(4)What can be the best title of the text?

A.No exercise at all is the best choice.
B.More exercise means a healthier life.
C.Marathons runners are least likely to die.
D.Too strenuous exercise is no better than.

          • 13.    A thousand years ago the Mississippians,a diverse group of Native Americans who lived in the area which is today known as the south-eastern United States, took a small village on the Mississippi River and turned it into one of the world's first great urban centres.Cahokia,as it has been called by archaeologists(考古學家),became as large as London was in the11th century.Ahead of its time,Cahokia was at the heart of ancient society in North America;an ancestor of today's capital cities.
In one respect in particular,Cahokia was quite unusual compared to other cities around at the same time.Archaeologists working on the site have found enough evidence over the past fifty years to conclude that,at a certain time, around 35%of the population were not from Cahokia at all;it seems that many of the tribes that lived all along the Mississippi River at some point began to relocate to Cahokia. These researchers have been unable to find more than a handful of other examples of such relocation of tribes, but they do know that something about Cahokia attracted thousands of people to this regional centre. And that, they supposed, appears to have been thanks to a small group of planners who one day decided to redesign the entire village. After the redesigns of the village were put in place, the Native Americans at Cahokia worked with tireless determination to carry them out.Eventually, after a few decades, the vision of the city planners was fulfilled, but even they could not have predicted how popular Cahokia would become.
From this period on,Cahokia was alive with intense activity, and grew in size every year, partly because of the cooperation between the residents. In many ways,it seems to have been the ideal place to live, and one with an exciting and bright future ahead of it.And yet, having become a major population centre around AD 1050,by 1350 it had been almost completely abandoned.Somewhere in the course of 300 years, something happened to Cahokia to cause this, but it is a mystery that even archaeologists themselves struggle to resolve.
This rather curious state of affairs exists today because researchers have never found a single piece of evidence that can conclusively explain why the residents left.Academics who have studied other Native American sites have always found weapons of war buried deep underground. And yet,the bows, arrows and swords that littered the ground at these other sites were nowhere to be seen at Cahokia.Other factors, such as disease or colonisation from European invasion,do not seem to be possible in this case,as common as they were elsewhere at that time. The absence of definitive theories as to Cahokia's decline is highly unusual, but then again,Cahokia was no ordinary city and perhaps comparisons with other urban centres of the time cannot be made.

(1)In what way was Cahokia quite different from other cities around at the same time?

A.Cahokia was designed by a small group of planners.
B.Many of Cahokia's residents were from other tribes.
C.Cahokia was as large as London was in the11th century.
D.It took Cahokia several decades to be built into a big city.
(2)Which of the following statements is true of Cahokia around AD 1050?

            A.It experienced a terrible war.
B.It was at the height of prosperity.
C.It already showed a sign of decline.
D.It would soon be rebuilt into a new city.
(3)The last paragraph is intended mainly to

A.emphasize the greatness that Cahokia once enjoyed
B.remind readers of the new discoveries related to Cahokia
C.tell readers why it is hard to explain why Cahokia was deserted
D.express the writer's regret that Cahokia was completely abandoned
(4)What is the passage mainly about?

A.The rise and fall of a city.
            B.The relocation of Cahokia.
C.The importance of the capital city.
D.The development of an ordinary city.

"Go home and ask your mummy about your blind brother!I am surprised you didn't know that he is as blind as a bat!"Hearing Nathan's words,I wanted to land a blow on him for making fun of my two-year-old brother,David, but I was more desperate to find out the truth.
With a misty vision,I ran home as fast as I could.Still out of breath,I questioned,"Is David blind?"Mother turned to me with tears in her eyes."Yes,he's born blind." It was a heartbreaking moment. Before I could continue any further, mother hugged me and cried,"I'm sorry,Caleb.Dad and I just didn't know how to tell you."
Suddenly,it struck me that David was blind but he could still hear the whole conversation. Not wanting him to be affected by it,I stopped crying and went forward and embraced him."I love you so much,David." Worry crept up on me:How hard life would be for him!
Little did I know that David was to inspire me so greatly.
As David grew up,he was fairly strong-willed.Despite the challenges that he faced,he continued to attend the school for visually impaired(損害) children. He insisted he would take the bus home on his own.Often,he would walk through the main door looking sheepish(怯弱的) and saying the same phrase, "Sorry Mum,I am late.I boarded the wrong bus again."
Tough as life was, there was always silver lining of misfortune.Despite not being able to see,he could play a piece of music after listening to it being played once on the piano. He even dreamed of playing solo(獨奏) one day on stage.Luckily for him,the school had discovered David's extraordinary talent.
